- Song Author: Kurt Cobain
Writing Period: 1988
Working Titles: Sad / Trophy
Date: 2-3 January 1990
Place: Reciprocal Recording, Seattle, Washington
Arguably the most unnecessary and uneconomical session Nirvana ever recorded. Kurt Cobain was determined to record Sappy as he wanted it to sound, devoting a whopping 10 hours studio time to that end. Jack Endino was bemused, "I couldn't figure out why they even bothered with it. It seemed like such B-side material next to their other stuff."
"Even Sub Pop was kind of puzzled by it", Endino remarked. "And there was no reason to record it right then, no single was planned or anything. Going through all that trouble just for one song is not a efficient use of time or recording money."
"Part of what took a long time was getting a drum sound", explained Endino. "Because they literally wanted a Steve Albini drum sound. They wanted a lot of room mics, and frankly the room at Reciprocal was a lousy room to put room mics in; it was very dead sounding."
"We spent a lot of time experimenting with reverbs and gated room mics and just doing lots of strange stuff during the mix", Endino recalled. It proved a wasted effort, as the track was consigned to the vaults until it's inclusion on Sliver: The Best Of The Box in 2005.

Lyrics
And if you save yourself, you will make him happy
He'll keep you in a jar, then you'll think you're happy
He'll give you breathing holes, then you'll think you're happy
He'll cover you with grass, then you'll think you're happy
Now
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
Conclusion came to you
Now if you kill yourself, you will make him happy
He'll keep you in a jar, then you'll think you're happy
He'll give you breathing holes, then you'll think you're happy
He'll cover you with grass, then you'll think you're happy
Now
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
Conclusion came to you
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
Conclusion came to you
And if you fuck yourself, you will make him happy
He'll give you fighting holes, then you'll think you're happy
He'll give you breathing holes, then you'll think you're happy
You'll wallow in your shit, then you'll think you're happy
Now
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
You're in a laundry room
Conclusion came to you - Hudba
Best version of this song. I love the raw sound they had; they didn't even need all that mastering.
agreed. smart sessions is a close #2
I died to this song after I did a line I remember hearing a verse and I don’t remember after that except when I woke up someone did cpr and saved my life I’m clean now and happy to love and live
glad to hear it! love!
That woulda been some shit If it was after the “and if you kill yourself” part
I don’t know if I believe you...
Delcia Biscotto believe me or not I don’t care
Lol CPR doesnt work like that you shithead. It's to save someone who's ABOUT to die from choking, drowning, etc.
The bassist rules this song
The best version of Sappy. The light a dnd light balance of sad/ pain a d happiness. The most nuanced and balanced vocal and the best Solo. Fact!
One of their best songs
The explicit lyrics in this song are key to its true character
Today on July 15th 2020, at 11:50p.m. Eastern Pacific time, I am dying listening to this original demo. The best ever to have been. I'm so sad and sappy.
Uhhh.. you still here man?
Recently saved or recently deceased?
One of the best nirvana song EVER !!! LOVE IT !!!
This is the best version of the song! Amazing!
This is amazing
Best version
Who are the 8 miserable humans that dislike such raw talent?
Is a great song i can't stop to sing it
Best version of this song I love how raw and punk it is
Love Nirvana. Love this song.
Best song!!!
A melhor versão
Esta versión de sappy es mi favorita
this is better than the montage of heck early demo
I've always loved this song as "verse chorus verse. "
Kurt's solo in that version is way better
Wrong song
I love when it's one minute and 4 seconds more heavier than sinister I love his old Epiphone 270
I really like this early version of sappy better due to the drums being played differently than the next 2 versions by Dave Grohl
Don't forget the 4/90 version, also with Chad
Sappy my favorit
You're in a laundry room!
The clue that came to you.
@@WizzleThump conclusion came to you
MineThatCube Mc I read this as he sang it lol
Fuck you lol
@@Frag-Drache-Offiziel the clues have came to you 😄
Me gusta ésta versión
🎸
Nice!
it sounds like it was put on nevermind
How does Kurt get that sound quality the guitar parts especially
Certain Mods on his box im guessing
Just the cranked tone knob on his Boss DS-1
I like to think this a mix between the Pachyderm and Smart Sessions versions.
The drumming on this version is absolutely anemic.
I completely understand why Kurt would trash Chad's kit sometimes during shows.
Best version of Sappy. Great song.
i don't know why i think this version is better then the main one
Read the description and you will understand :D
I generally dig Chad's vibe, but the drum fills going into the choruses make me anxious
It’s a demo

Does anyone know is Kurt using a big muff on this beacuse i don t think it s a ds1/ds2 simply beacuse i experimented with the settings on my ds2 and I just can t get that sound
Can anyone help?
Love this song
This song is about being trapped by a manipulative person and deluding yourself that you're happy trapped like a bug in a jar just because they gave you five new breather holes and some grass even though you're really just wallowing in your own sht slaving away doing their washing in the laundry room
where can i find the solo tab for this version?
Orison No, just for this version of the solo. The original is super easy FYI.
I'm playing Metallica and Buckethead now. I just can't exactly make out the notes he used for this solo because of all the feedback.
Orison Can you play this solo exacly note for note?
Orison I just started a band that will be writing our own stuff, but plays covers also. why be so rude to a simple question I asked?
Well.. If you're playing advanced things like Buckethead (btw, I love him too xD) you should play this solo at the first try, but...
If you listen with attesting you can figure it out easily
why this isn't in Spotify man
It is now
Heavy op amp distortion.
If you will understand the lyrics you will understand how fucked up life we have as an artists
I ❤ Nirvanaaa
i love NiRvArNa
RIP Kurt Cobain
Thank god Dave Grohl appeared. Chad Channing is too light on drums for this band.
Wtf you talking about this drums kick
so much ass
@@matiasarteaga4548 he sucked most of his drumming didnt fit songs for nirvana
@@scarykurapika100yago2 if he sucked why are you listening to chad's version of sappy?
it been hidden in the no alternative album ...i think 1993
the drummer rules this song
edit: this song is named Verse Chorus Verse,.. not sappy (3rd part he sings: "and if you fuck yourself", thats verse chorus verse lyrics, + the high tune he is singing)
This is the real verse chorus verse,.. all other versions are sappy and played differently btw.
90% of youtube versions name of this song is wrong.
Ok, I decided to responde to clarify things a bit
The original title of this song was Sad in 1988 and then it got called Sappy from 1989 to 1990 where was actually played live quite a bit
Then in 1993 it was released in the No Alternative album as Verse Chorus Verse, since Kurt wanted so much a song with that name
Now, people still refer to this as Sappy, since there is another Verse Chorus Verse, played in between 1990 and 1991 live and recorded in the Nevermind sessions but never came to the album(God knows why)
So to not create confusion between the two songs, people refer to Verse Chorus Verse(1993) with the original title of Sappy, and the other as Verse Chorus Verse(in most bootlegs, you will find it as "In his Hands". However the title has been proven false)
@@ameliabaroni2650 Exactly. The other song is called "In His Hands".
Really no one posts any comments on this song?

this song is about depression
In fact,Kurt stated it's about a woman who was in love with him,and he didn't knew how to manage the situation, she was sexy, beautiful and extremely hot!
i don't think so look this line and if you save yourself you will make him happy -- like save yourself from sadness or depression and make God Happy i'm brazilian sorry for my english =s
or maybe this -- A song barely anyone knows about by Nirvana. The song is genious and is about doing things to make yourself happy for a temporary time and then realizing where you are and how its ruining your life. The main example of the song is doing drugs to calm you down for a short period of time and then you snap back into reality. This sounds ironic because Kurt does drugs but Kurt tried to get people to not do what he did like do drugs, smoke, and live a life of anger.
The way I interpret is that whatever you're doing god will always love you and be happy.
Kurt disse que gostaria que as pessoas parassem de impõe tanto significado nas músicas dele... Pode ser o que você quiser, ou pode não ser nada. Depende da interpretação, abraço!
... Nothing much tbh
