- Another blustery day in the Isle of Purbeck would welcome the 'Winter Warm Up' on the Swanage Railway, with four locomotives in action on the Dorset branch line. Taking place over the weekend of January 6th-7th, the event would see an even split of steam and diesel traction operating both passenger services and a demonstration ballast freight set.
Steam traction would be provided by T3 Class - 563 and 34028 "Eddystone"; the latter recently completing a season on 'The Polar Express' festive service. The T3 has also undergone significant engineering work through the autumn months, with revisions to its steam circuit in an effort to improve its performance characteristics. Diesel duties would be shared by the resident pair of Class 33s, D6515 "Lt Jenny Lewis RN" and 33111. All four would be in service on both days of the event, with each making an appearances on both passenger services and the demonstration freight set. The event would mark the first time in over 75 years, that 563 has hauled freight.

What a fantastic last shot, the sparks in the dusk really made it 😍
Thanks very much
The cinders looked like snow in that last shot! Loved that opening morning sunshine shot of 563!
Thanks very much
That is a beautiful engine
Man the T3 has got some stack talk, love it!
The falling glowing embers were fantastic. Great film
Glad you enjoyed it
Stuffed and mounted at the NRM ( sorry, 'railway museum') or live and running at Swanage...... a no brainer.
While I appreciate the humour in NRM-bashing, it is worth remembering that the SR would never have been given the T3 had the NRM not been agreeable about the whole project, and patient while the plans were laid for its transfer to Dorset.
Beautiful, the pre grouping locos are lovely!
Treated yourself to some decent weather at last!!!😂😂😂 563 seems to chuck out a load of clag but with Eddy on the back the sparks were really flying. Cheers Matthew👍👍👍
Finally got lucky 😅 Still very much a clag machine, but audibly a much more solid locomotive than when it was launched. A real credit to the team behind it.
Straight away, even before 563 came into sight, it sounded WAY more businesslike than it's first steamings, last year. Bit claggy with the loudest pedal open, perhaps....but no worse than the T9 when I saw it on the Mid Hants, or the K&ESR's gorgeous old 0-6-0st 'Charwelton' attacking Tenterden Bank.
A dyed in the wool southerner, I've got a definite soft spot for the Cromptons. 🙂
I was on the last 2 double headed services with 563 and Eddystone, the sparks looked really cool out of the window. Great shots!
Brilliant video as always, especially the double header which I didn't stick around for. I did wonder if you were around that day.
Thank you for sharing, brilliant video!
Cheers
563 seems to be actually throwing sparks hauling a slightly dormant Eddystone in the last sequence...may be it's developed a bit a of a blow on the cylinder rod glands as there there seems to be a lot of leakage both front and rear of the cylinders ...good to see it doing some work...
Wow those dusk scenes of the ash dropping were great
Lovely locomotive beautiful, but I think it will need a spark arrestor in the summer lol.
Wonder if Dapol or Rapido will model the LSWR T3 in 00? Would make a wonderful sight on any layout hauling a Steam Special if produced to the same standard as the Dapol SECR D Class.
Or Accurascale for that matter! All 3 of them seem to be leading the way with modelling now
Super nice video :)
Cheers
I guess you can say this is Edward's Satur-Day Out
