Jay Z said: “I never even told him this, but I remember that Eminem came into the studio when we made ‘Moment of Clarity,’ which he produced, on The Black Album. So here’s Eminem. It’s 2003, I think The Eminem Show had come out, and he was, like, the biggest rapper in the world - he sold, like, 20 million records worldwide or some ridiculous number. But when he came to the studio, I remember I hugged him and I could feel that he had on a bulletproof vest. I couldn’t imagine being that successful. I mean, he’s a guy who loves rap and wanted to be successful his whole career. Then he finally gets it, and there’s this dark cloud over him. There’s this big beef between 50 Cent and Ja Rule-and between real people, too-so he has to worry about that. He has to be afraid to walk around New York freely. I was like, ‘Here it is. You’ve gotten everything you wanted, and now you’re a prisoner of your own fame.’ That’s sad to me-that you have to walk around in a bulletproof vest after you’ve sold 20 million records. So, the point being, what I’m interested in is the thing under the thing. You can think you know where he was at when he said those raps, but I saw another level of it personally, and I found it sad.”

    This song is so good.
It was made kind of as an end-point to the beef between Eminem, 50cent on one side (including all their friends and pals) and Ray Benzino and Ja Rule on the other side. Ja had a beef with 50 even before he got really famous (before being signed by Dre and Eminem) so Eminem kinda inherited the beefing between them - and certainly rose to the challenge. So he made a few songs and they battled back and forth but Ja and 50 got into it so bad that there was actual violence involved (Ja Rule said (not sure if true) that he was the one who stabbed 50, and there was also something about Eminem's friend Proof getting beat up?)) and there was actual threat that it would get to the point where people would get killed for some words on a record.
So on the album Encore, Eminem put up this song and the video and his friend Proof played the guy shot and killed - he was supposed to represent Bugz, a former member of D12, who was shot dead. It was only about a year later that Proof REALLY died, shot, though it was in a bar where the bartender said Proof had pulled out a gun and so he shot him. I don't think anyone has ever really found out what happened - not officially, at least.
Either way - this video must truly be a pain to watch.
Btw, maybe you're interested, the Magazine XXL has Eminem on its cover-story, with some insight into his drug-problems and how his mind works concerning rapping.

This song is one of my earliest memories of Em, even though I know I was listening when I was younger.
In the video, the man who was in the hospital was Em’s real life friend (best friend), Proof. He was depicting another rapper, Bugz, who was shot and killed in a feud/beef. What makes this song and video so eerie is that proof suffered a very similar fate just a few years later 🥲. I can’t imagine what this song means to Em now, given the circumstance. He’s referenced Proof in a lot of later songs, especially on the recovery album (going through changes comes to mind).
This song is a big shoutout to the rap game, to stop killing one another. Coincidentally Em had a similar message in sing for the moment. How’s that saying going, those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it.
    Rip Proof 💜

Eminem had beef with Benzino, he was co-owner of Source Magazine at the time, they called him a culture vulture and shit, 50 Cent had beef with Ja Rule and Murder Inc., Eminem, D12, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Dr. Dre, Aftermath all had a huge beef with Benzino and his Made Men, Ja Rule, Murder Inc.
The reference for "Toy Soldiers" is a song by Martika that released in 1988 a song using the Nursery Rhyme lyrics, Eminem sampled the 1988 song in the Chorus of this hence the name.
Eminem's song Like Toy Soldiers released in 2004, the song was basically him telling a story of winning the beef against the other groups mentioned but him wanting to end it before anyone else in his Camp died, they lost a long time friend Bugz. in the video Proof plays the part of their friend being shot and killed over rap beefs, the crazy part is two years later in 2006 Proof was shot and killed in an eerily similar way to this music video.
we had new albums from Eminem in 2002, 2004, 2006, then nothing for 3 years after Proofs death, he stopped tours, for those three years and a lot of people thought he was walking away from the rap industry.
After 2009 we had the albums relapse, relapse/refill, recovery, and this is the time where he got sober and starting making music again, a few years later we got MMLP2 in 2013 and he vanished again until revival in 2017, and ever since then he's been on a tear ripping the industry apart which brings us to Kamikaze, and MTBMB 1 AND 2.
when I say he disappeared from the industry mean he wasn't putting out his own music, he had a lot of features in between and was still making good music but we all awaited his return and wanted more of his personal projects to drop but people said he fell off, he wasn't slim shady anymore he was just Eminem and lost his edge. but he's proved time and time again he's not the one to screw with, lyrically. (Pasted from a history lesson of rap).

Proof-The guy dying at the beginning which is all true. He was Eminem's best friend from before anyone knew who he was. He had a huge rep in Detroit and took Eminem under his wing but never to use or exploit him, just to help get him taken seriously in rap battles. When he was killed, Eminem broke, got addicted, was overworked, then overdosed and had to relearn how to rap.
Benzino-The owner or editor or CEO of The Source, the biggest rap magazine when those relics were still of value and tried to blacklist Eminem and give his albums terrible reviews for no reason, except for race, if there were other reasons, race was still the main one, so Eminem and Dre and their crew and artists, killed The Source and it went under. Then they destroyed Benzino's career as a musician, but didn't talk trash about his daughter who is a famous singer in her own right, Coral Del Ray or something, I don't know, but because Em didn't diss Benzino's daughter and just murdered him, Benzino's daughter hates her own dad, do they double F'd him up, and he's half white.
Bad Boy Records is Puff Daddy's, or Diddy, then P Diddy, and now Diddly Squat, but artists from Bad Boy tried taking shots at Eminem, which all backfired.
Ja Rule - A delusional ecstasy popping, steroid abusing, Bad Boy artists that imitated DMX (RIP), then tried to be the next Pac, and said Hailey's name in a diss for no reason...Ja or Ja Rule now "Holla holla's" screams of help from No Life Shaq's toilet. It was a Shady/Aftermath one sided slaughter that ruined careers. People tried coming at Eminem for clout, they don't have careers anymore as rappers, Nick the racist Cannon and Mariah Carey both said something, and they were married, and Em was in a relationship with Mariah before but she tried going at Em also, but Em, Dre, 50 and D12 destroyed them all, but the reality of it was that so it led to was Proof getting murdered, not sure if it was related but this song is Em reflecting on the unproductive consequences of beg beef. It's terrible but some of the best diss tracks the industry has seen since Hit em Up by Pac

Saw this comment on one of the reaction videos I watched before yours. This might help as it helped me understand what happened too. I grew up hearing my brother play Em's CDs but it's just now that I came to understand all the lyrics and backstories. :)
    -----------
This is going to be long, but hopefully helpful. This story is partly true and partly hypothetical. It's about a big beef (feud) that was going on back in the day. It was only about 6-7 years after the deaths of Pac and Biggie that this happened, so it was all very fresh in everyone's minds.
I'm the farthest thing from an expert and I don't think there really is a full accurate accounting of what happened, just due to the nature of the situation - people won't talk about it, but this is what I've managed to scrape together personally. So there were these beefs that were all going on at once, and eventually melded together. This was Em's attempt to squash (end) it. It never really did end to this day, but it's just petty pokes now, it simmered down.
There were three elements 1- Suge Knight (this is the beef Dre told Em to stay out of) who is a legendary baddie and former owner of Death Row Records. He really made some huge contributions to hip hop and is a legend in his own right for good and bad things. There's a lot of history with Dre here. Suge reportedly liked to send goons after people, especially Dre and his people because of their relationship. He had a reputation for violence, stuff like dangling Vanilla Ice off of a balcony (allegedly). He's currently in prison. 2- The Source Magazine/Benzino. This was Em's beef. It's complicated as well, but basically the co-owner Benzino went on a smear campaign against Em and it got really hot. At one point he said in a song that Hailie would go missing and end up dead. I don't know of any actual violence here. 3- Murder Inc/Ja Rule. This was 50 Cent's beef and it started in the streets. One story is that Ja got robbed of his chain at gunpoint by a friend of 50's, and when Ja saw 50 with the guy the beef started. Ja was signed to Murder Inc (record label), which was rumored to have ties to the people who were rumored to have shot 50. This beef got very violent at times. When 50 signed to Shady/Aftermath (record labels) Dre and Em asked 50 not to take shots at Ja on record and 50 sort of behaved himself, but Ja decided to go on record and diss (disrespect) Em, Dre and 50. He said "Em you claim that your mother's a crackhead and Kim is a known slut, so what's Hailie gon' be when she grows up" along with various threats and insults toward them and others. From there it escalated, both on and off record.
Several dozen songs were spawned from this beef - really interesting to listen to the songs, probably not so fun to live what was going on. Serious threats were being thrown around (including from Em). It involved dozens of people on both sides including 50 Cent's G-Unit and Em's group D12 and protege Obie Trice and others. Fights, 50's record manager's office was shot up at one point, and probably a lot of stuff that wasn't public and never will be. They were all running around in bullet proof vests and not just for a fashion statement.
I think Em believed it had gotten close to a breaking point, and that someone was going to get killed, which is where the hypothetical comes in. He, 50, Dre - all of the big names in the light - behind them were all of the others who support them, young and upcoming rappers, fans, people willing to fight for them verbally or otherwise. That's the person in that bed. I get why people say Bugz since Em knew him and there was a tribute to him at the end of the video, but Bugz wasn't the only person Em knew who died of violence, so I don't think so. I think the lyrics make it clear that he's talking about how it's usually the people who aren't in the light, 'one of his people' who are the ones that get hurt and killed. He's saying that if he makes the choice to be the bigger man and put down the mic, take a step back, then he may be able to prevent that hypothetical from happening, because all of the people out there supporting him won't feel the need to fight for him anymore, him having made the choice to end it. Of course he unilaterally declared his side the winner at the same time. Luckily pretty much everyone agreed with him since Murder Inc/The Source had both been really pummeled by the beef and other legal and financial issues.
You might want to react to some of the diss tracks someday just to see what they're like - Em's pretty legendary for the feuds he's been involved in, though I think this was by far the most serious one. Diss tracks do tend to get into the hardcore territory but there are quite a few that are just funny and disrespectful - Em tends to go the mocking route. Nail in the Coffin czcams.com/video/-TX6o7R8LSg/video.html aimed at Benzino/The Source Magazine or Hail Mary remix Em, 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes czcams.com/video/5YLBTWZimuU/video.html aimed at Ja Rule might be ones to check out to give you an idea of what rap beef is. They're both very disrespectful but pretty tame lyrically - there will be some cursing.

He had just left his childhood best friend, Proof, and it F'D him up badly in the head. Eminem was trying to make it as a rapper in a black hood and Proof was that friend that we'd all be lucky to have, saved his life probably, but Proof had mad respect from everyone so he gave Eminem the ability to battle at underground rap battles and once they stopped paying attention to his skin color, they heard his rhymes and he won second place in the Rap-Olympics. Benzino was a owner or editor for The Source, the magazine that made or destroyed rappers career by giving their albums 0 to 5 mics, or stars, and Benzino purposely made sure his album got a 2 in The Source, which everyone knew was complete BS, cause it instantly took over cause Dre risked his career and signed Eminem and Proof was the real best friend that made all that possible. So, they dissed The Source and eventually ended it, but not before they went back to rerate it.... Someone please remind me of the song where he talks about one album was the greatest, and another was fantastic, so in 10 years, the album he released that's getting trashed by Benzino's magazine, will end up being illmatic?

Proof got shot and died in the video of EMINEM saying he is putting all his beefs to bed before someone else dies because he loves his friends and out of love and respect for the culture he wanted it to stop before it escalated and someone in the game died as a result. Two years after this video came out, in April 2006, Proof was shot to death following a fight in a Detroit nightclub and the people around tried to blame it on Proof saying he just came in and started shooting, but anyone who knows Proof knows that’s not him, he was all about de-escalating the situation and wouldn’t draw his gun or shoot first. The part about Hallie was Ja Rule was beefing with EM because he signed 50 Cent and Ja said “EM, you claim your mother’s a crackhead and Kim is a known slut so what’s Hallie going to be when she grows up” and that is what sparked the beef that led to this song. You really don’t hear about Ja Rule anymore because EM and D12, EM’s group he signed to his own label after he became famous, absolutely obliterated his career.

Theres no rules when it comes to battling. The thing Ja said about Haley wasn't even super direct. He said her name, but all he said was something about his mom, his BM, then said "so what's haley gon be when she grows up?" he didn't take it to the extreme he could have. His own people would've got on his ass for violating like that.
