MOST DANGEROUS MOUNTAIN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA | SAN GORGONIO MOUNTAINS (11,503 FT)

- It started as a great weather for a hike to this beautiful mountain. Martin, Luis, Mike and myself set out for a training (day) hike to San Gorgonio with an elevation of 11,503 ft, towering all over the whole of Southern California.
By the time we reach 9,000 ft high, the clouds starts to accumulate above and move fast towards the summit area. At least that was how it looked like that day.
Some summiteers stayed only for 10 minutes at the summit, complaining it was too cold to stay. By the time we approach the summit, we knew something was brewing and the outcome won't be good for us.
After some photo opt and drinks, we took off and descend as fast as we could. We hit the saddle above the last switchback and had some hot meal and sandwiches. By the time we hit below High Creek, rain starts to drizzle and kept getting stronger by the minute. It didn't take long before hailstorm appeared. This time the surroundings become foggy.
We reached the Wilderness sign and clearly we heard the raging flow of water below us. Soon enough we reached the bottom and found out that flash flood kept the hikers ahead of us stranded.
There was no other way to get out of there but to cross that river bed which I passed by early that morning as bone dry. After taking risk and using common sense and presence of mind, we were able to find a passable spot to cross.
I hope with this video, viewers will somehow learn something especially the nature of this mountain.
All is well that ends well. It was a happy ending nevertheless.

It was crazy at the summit. Intense at the bottom. Thanks for watching, tc.
What a great adventure, awesome job getting out safely and helping others. Super job on the edit too! Thanks for taking us along on the journey.
Thinking about going for this hike this summer, thnx for sharing!!
I just moved to Yucaipa. I remember seeing those low dark clouds up there. I live 10 mins from the Mill Creek Ranger station. Glad you all got out safe.
W6RIP Radio Adventures
Oh wow, you’re so close to where the action is when there’s flash flood. Thanks.
I too live in Yucaipa. I always make a run to mill creek to catch the floods.
@@20robertang for sure. I wish i would have known about your trip. I could have been up there with ropes in 30 minutes. When are you doing Whitney? Im going up Oct 13th.
@@HuckOutdoors awesome! New neighbors with like minds. Id like to get out with you all one day. I am at 37 peaks this year. Little behind. I have a goal of 52 this year. One per week average.
W6RIP Radio Adventures
Thanks for your thought, yeah I was thinking if we have rope - it would have been easier for us. Well, good luck on your trip Kevin and hope to cross path with you somewhere.
What an adventure and I'm glad you guys made it out safe but I loved the views you showed on this trip. I loved your clouds videos. Another great 5mm video. Thank you.
Hanging on the Trail
Somehow we got lucky, we got wet and cold but rewarded with a different kind of views. Let’s get out again and do some adventure!
Awesome video! Crazy adventure. Glad everyone made it out safe.

Sometimes you’ll never know where the journey will lead you. And sometimes when you’ll lucky enough, she will show you her majestic beauty and crazy side. I might come back this weekend. Thanks for watching, Anthony. Glad you like it. Tc
One for the books! Glad you are all safe.

Thank you. This one came out to be a good training day. We learned some things and experienced the danger up close.
Glade everyone got out ok. It's a trip how fast the weather can change on you. Have fun summiting Whitney man.
Backcountry Wanderer
Thanks, Steve. It’s ever changing. But the pattern was there, it’s just that we need to push ourselves a little bit.
Wow great video thank for sharing
Thank you for watching.👍
You guys have all the fun good to see guys are ok thanks for sharing
Love2Wander
Thanks, Mike. Crazy fun all right. Hopefully we’ll cross path with you guys in Lone Pine.
Hope so we will be there in about 3 weeks

Thankful for this experience. Kinda different from the usual.
Thanks for watching.
Crazy-fun hike!! I think the BIG GUY in the sky was looking over us. At the end of the day I was lucky to be hiking with you guys......
TheMbn1972
Pleasure to climb mountains with you guys, we got lucky this time, we had a great unforgettable adventure. Hope to do more..
Wow dude....just..wow....I will never look at that place the same again.
Tuba Solo the Hiker
You’re right, this time she was unforgiving. But thank God we got out safe. I believe the mountain can kill me.. but I beg she won’t.
I like how you show that weather can change. Even before I became interested in this mountain, a teacher warned us about ascents during monsoon season.
I really appreciate your comment, and thanks for checking out the video.
Especially now that we received so much snow this past week, San G must be buried with few feet of snow. Without the trail, one can easily be lost.
Every time-10/15 tunes-I’ve hiked that mountain, I’ve wondered how that crossing is so immense but simultaneously so dry. Thanks for showing how!
Antonio Ondrus
Mother Nature is unpredictable, you’ll never know what she will throw at us. Thanks for watching.
We were there every time during summer. Not a drop of water in the river bed at Vivian Creek. Great prep for your next adventure, it was for us. Good luck on Whitney!
Renata R
Thanks you. This was he only time I experience it with water in the river much more with flood. Served as an eye opener for people who goes up to this mountain that there’s a river down below that could be dangerous sometime. Tc
pretty cool video..
Vinny Angell
Thanks for watching. I’m glad you liked it.
Whitney in Nov? Wow Best wishes on the hike, dangers are everywhere, adapt, overcome, ultimately the mountain decides.
Don Milligan
Actually, Oct 20-21. I did it in 2016 and last year same month. But weather up there is always unpredictable. That’s why I respect all Mountains and never joke about going up unprepared. Thanks, Don.
its mother nature..... and your decision to wait is the best thing .......... for you have survived to see another great sunrise ! ^.^
Thanks!
Presence of mind is the key to such situation like this. We pulled through, thank God.
i dunno i think i might have kept that dollar myself... haha... clouds were making great light for the video... that flood was nuts, i had seen some of this footage already, Wow.. glad you all found a safe place to cross,, thanks for taking us with you Great Video
potatothorn
The dollar had written message, probably a dedication.
If the weather will be like this come Sat-Sun at Whitney.. then we can deal with it. Hopefully it’ll be better.
Thanks for your support and watch out for the next trip.
Most videos emphasized how beautiful or how easy to hike in San Gorgonio Mountain. Thank you for pointing out the potential dangers in this mountain. Must be very serious to prepare the hiking.
Thank you. There was a recent rescue done in Gorgonio and it took two days to retrieve the injured hiker. He survived because he was prepared to stay overnight just in case bad things happen. So many things to know and must learned when trekking our high mountains.
Looks like I missed out on a good time! Good luck with whitney buddy.
Huck Outdoors
Thanks buddy, we should get out in the snow this winter and bit the odds, lol.
It truly is a dangerous mountain. Great video Robert. Can be fun when weather gets extreme...as long as ending is good. Glad everyone made it down safe. Wonder about those 6 Martin was talking about? Went up last Feb and had lunch at waterfall just below high creek with Icicle's and frozen waterfall. Best of luck on Whitney brother. Gonna be extreme this late in season. Be safe. Hopefully see you in December for meet up...Mark

Thanks, Mark. By the time we reach the parking area, the water level subside already and the remaining hikers got out safe as well. In fact one hiker commented on my FB posted video of the flash flood and said that he made it safe across.
This will be my third year in a row climbing Whitney in October. Yeah, I’m praying for a good weather. For sure this time will be a different kind of adventure.
Forest Falls gets like that. Extremes. I got stuck there for 10 hours because of a mud and rock slide. Not hiking, just driving. That was sketchy to be halfway across the creek. Put your group right in the middle. Glad you made it.
Thank you. With the rain season coming soon, I’m worried about the landslide or flash flood that may arrive in this area. Hopefully, people will think of those stuff, scary to be stuck up in the mountain.
I remember when this happened. It’s amazing how fast Mother Nature can change up there
hotfootedhiker
It was a great day to experience all these kind of elements Mother Nature can throw at you.
fivemoreminutes many years ago on a Summit attempt I got stuck stuck on the 10,000 ft Ridge in a gnarly August storm. Rain , hail , thunder and lightning all around me. The sound of thunder at 10,000ft is amazing
hotfootedhiker
Wow! That was something else, did you get a video? I still have to comeback there soon. I missed the July 4 weekend annual hike to San G this year.
I've heard it said that you could sooner control the tides of the Sea than even begin to tame the mountains. Never underestimate mother nature and never turn your back to her. I'm so happy all of you made it out safe.

Power Courage and Wisdom
I’ll remember that, Tony. At least next time if it happens again, I know what to do. Great learning experience. Tc
Gosh you had it tough. A friend and I walked up San Gorgonio in 1989, and had 2 wonderful days. We bivouacked on the summit, and fed a chipmunk. The weather was good, and it all seemed somewhat tame. Weather is the biggest enemy on mountains or even just being plain outside.
They say the mountains make their own weather, that’s why anyone who hike it should be prepared for anything.
I spent I think 3 times up in the summit already with just a bivy. I love it up there, I can’t wait to visit the Old Greyback soon.. thanks for checking out the video.
I've been on the summit 5 times, and only 1 nasty day like yours in Sept. I did not get caught in rain though. I've never seen water in the dry creek crossing. Although all mountains can be dangerous if not respected, I never thought of hiking Gorgonio as dangerous. It is difficult, but with adequate preparation and supplies, it's not a big deal in the summer. It is important to keep to a strict schedule. Leave the summit in time to be down before sunset. I took a friend to the summit, and after 1pm I said, "time to go". She was like, "Let's stay a bit longer, I'm enjoying it up here." I adamantly said, "No, we have to leave NOW." We made it to the dry creek crossing at sunset, and to the car just before dark. She was thanking me for being so strict, and concerned about the many people we left at the summit, how they would make it down in the dark.
Earlier this year we attempted it twice on day hikes and we finished both late at night. It wasn’t that bad as long as you know you’re dealing with. But all should take it seriously, nobody wins against Mother Nature.
What time of year was this? Could this happen in spring or summer you think?
This was in October, monsoon season. You know, the mountains have their own weather. It could be anything in the beginning of the day and totally different outcome towards the end. Could happen any month..
At What month did u do this back then?
This was in September of 2018 I believe.
The weather report was inaccurate?
So my favorite childhood place is dangerous... BOI
Sudoku Future16
Dangerous as being unpredictable..
I FEEL LIKE MOUNT BALDY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS CUZ THATS ALL I HEAR ABOUT HIKERS DYING ON THAT MOUNTAIN
By numbers, there are more people hike/climb Mt Baldy than San G in any given time. Especially in winter. It’s in close proximity from LA and more popular than San G or even San J for snow hiking or climbing. Hence, more novice hikers or people who don’t have proper equipment or knowledge how to do snow travel end up injured, lost or deceased.
Lmao this is not a dangerous mountain at all!
