Synopsis: Manoranjan(Kamal Haasan) is a huge movie star who is loved by the masses. He leads a controversial life and hides it from his fans. One fine day, he comes to know that he has brain tumour and is going to die soon.
A disappointed Manoranjan decides to make the most of his remaining time by acting in one last film. He approaches his mentor Margadarshi(K Balachander) and requests him to direct his last film. A prestigious project called Uttama Villain is launched and rest of the story is as to whether Manoranjan completes the film and fulfils his final desire.

There are 2 stories happening, the real life and the film. The actor(Mano) who is having a terminal disease and his dying, he wants to act in a comedy film one last time, where he plays the role of an "immortal" stage actor Utthaman. The film which the actor Mano is acting is about how sad immortality is, Observe the irony. Mano's character represents an artists life, Utthaman's character represents his art, the artist died(Mano died) but his art never dies(immortal Utthaman).

Not everyone can understand the concept of the movie. I still remember when the movie released and I watched at the theatre. Mostly, as usual "what a crap is this?" But for me, I know I've just seen a masterpiece, and one day will become a reference movie for alot of upcoming Tamil movies.
Maybe those who don't know what is subgenres or Hybrid genre movies, this is one of the best examples. You have two different stories, totally unrelated but acted by the same set of people, in a same movie. As usual, Kamal sir did something for 'future'.
