I think this may be the best Trans Am ever built. Absolutely stunning!
I think back to the early 70s and marvel at the fact that the neighborhood I grew up in.We had right down the street there were 2 70 T/As 2 67 GTOs 1 70 Z28 a 70 GTO and a 66 426 Hemi Charger. And a 66 GTO in my garage.
The early 2nd gen T/A and Formula are some of my all time favorites.

My favorite car ever is that model or maybe an SD with a functional intake flap. I remember these cars back then when I was a kid. I would see them lighting the tires up in town.
I want one ! love the 1st and 2nd gen firebirds , Formula's and T/A"s , the look and styling of the 70' through 73' T/A and Formula's will never get old , even a beat up one looks great !
Super sweet. Between my brother and myself we owned '71, '73, '76, '77 , '78 and a '79' All sweet but the '71 in white was the favorite.

absolutely gorgeous T/A..i've owned many and still do...timeless cat with a timeless design. great job on this. and i am a Huge pontiac fan.
That’s has to be my favorite year for the T/A. In 1980 I did purchase a 1978 Trans Am. First of all the big bird delete caught my eye on the Myan Red paint job plus very low mileage. Now that I’m older and retired I would love to have a blue 71 T/A like this one.

One of the best looking and performing cars Pontiac ever made and they made a LOT great looking and performing cars over the years.
this is a real nice car to drive. I've the same in white, same year, same engine with the original 197 heads. They are hard to find and has become expensive. in 71 there were only 1236 build with automatic transmission. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from France

I love American Muscle cars with the 70 through to 73 T/A’s being my all time favourites.Owned a 71 Esprit with T/A body kit and a 77 T/A 400 in my younger days, now own a 2000 C5 and a 93 Silverado as my toys but could quite happily sell them and go back to a T/A paying big money for one now days....great video 👍

Quentin, in stock trim both cars were relatively equal, with the tires being the limiting factor. The RAIV leaned more towards the race car characteristics, while the 455HO was more towards the street side. The 455 gave up some compression and camming to the RAIV, but made up for it with the long stroke crank. Both cars were massively fun cars, 'specially when ordered with a 4 speed. :)
@@quentin3330 455 H.O. was a tad quicker and faster. These regularly ran high 13's. However, the '73 SD was the King of the hill.
I had a friend that owned one of these. 4 speed stick, and it was wicked.
I had a ‘73 Esprit in Buccaneer Red. Some of my favorite memories are of driving that car.

Regarding the shaker hood scoop unless there's a deviation due to where this car was sold ( emission /noise regulations ), Trans ams through 1972 had functional shaker scoops .
70-72 had functional shaker scoops with an electronic flapper door that would open at full throttle. 73-74 were not functional. They had rivets holding the block off plate in keeping it closed. They could be removed easily.
@@505Tempest my first trans am was a 78, my second was a 76, scoop had 3 removable screws holding it in place, easily removed, they sealed them up in 73 due to noise restrictions, and look at radios playing today, good grief
@@terrybangley5416 My first Firebird was a '78 as well, with a 400ci swap. I never knew what the motor came out of. A mechanic said it had the "good heads" on it. I hurt a lot of feelings in that car. lol

I keep coming back to these vids over the years. Very well made. If the guys behind these want to take it a bit further, could they do reviews much like Bud Lindeman Road Test series. So breaking, 0-100 times, road course handling. There is only so much that can be viewed from old magazine articles.
Thanks for the kind words! We'd have loved to road test the vehicles on MCOTW, but most are not tagged for street use, and the logistics of getting them all to a track was a bit beyond our resources. There are other series out there that test cars, but most in The Brothers Collection are 100% stock and original, making them a bit risker to beat on than a driver-quality version. But we agree, that would have been fun!
Like the Lucerne Blue better than White, 1971 Formula 455 had more color choices

My first ride was a 72 esprit that I customized with formula n TA parts. In the late 70's, nothing out handled that car, and hardly anything beat me in a race!

The shaker scoop was functional,from 1970-1972. It was rendered non-functional from 1973 on,due to stricter noise standards,as you pointed out in your video on the 1973 SD 455 Trans AM.

Great video, as always! Please keep them coming! There were a couple very minor mistakes though; the shaker scoop is functional on 'all '70-'72 Trans Ams and the 455 H.O. decal on the flapper was added at some point by a previous owner. Starting in '73 the shaker flap was held on by a few easily drilled out rivets to comply with new noise regulations. Beautiful car in a stunning package!

The 455 HO and SD 455 were. These cars were monsters, especially when you consider that they were 8.4:1 "smog motors". But they were and are all fantastic cars! It all comes down to individual preference, in my opinion
@@tomlea3713 very true. I'd take a 70 1/2 to 73 any day. In fact i'd take a 74 also but never really dug the bumpers. But 70 to 73 ..oh man , these were something.
Pontiac did say that the 455 HO for 71/72 gave the GTO the fastest time-slips.... I wonder what the the true numbers (HP, Torque, and 1/4 mile) are for this set-up!
i've read that a stock '73 SD-455 ran a low to mid 13 second time..so i would assume the H.O. was right near that time...mid 13's stock.
455 HO was on average a high 13 second car. The '73 SD was a couple of tenths quicker.

We always forget to mention that this car and its sister the Camaro 19701/2 were designed with the Italian Collaboration which emphasis on Handling before Power. Center of gravity was lowered, that's what explain the DriveShaft tunnel going in between the rear seat. It was the best handling Muscle Car ever. Just watch the movie with John Wayne "McQ" if I'm not mistaken and compare it with other movies like "Bullitt", "Vanishing Point" and you can notice the superior handlind of the (Green) T/A . I just wanted to remind that historical fact and give credit where it is due. Long live the Muscle Cars.
I miss my 1970 1/2 Pontiac 455 H.O with M22 Rock Crusher. IMHO, it has one of the best looking fronts of any muscle car. I was forced to sell it in 1989 for $1500 because my folks said get it out of the driveway or they'd have it towed.
1970 1/2 did not come from the factory with a 455 , the 400 was the biggest eng in the firebird for 1970 , 71' was the first year for a factory 455 firebird . my brother In law had a 70 GTO with the 455HO i remember my first ride in that car and him hitting 2nd gear around 60 MPH and squealing the tires ! that thing was a beast !

Sorry you have been misinformed, no forged crank. The 455-HO had a cast iron crank in it along with cast pistons and connecting rods. I think the Super Duty engines from the late 50's and early 60's had all forged stuff in them. Even the 1973 and 1974 SD-455 did not have a forged crank in them. They have forged pistons and connecting rods. I know I have both. By the way the SD is a lot nicer engine performance and quality wise. The head casting on the HO has a ton of casting flash in the ports and valve pockets where the SD doesn't have any!
The Ram Air 2 and 4 was the first computer designed cam. The 455-HO cam is from the 389 tripower and 421HO from the mid 60's. The 041 came a little later
Was the 74 any good? Or too much restrictions? I know the 73 SD-455 were amazing but i keep hearing conflicting info on the 74. Some say it was still good in performance and that 75 was when they went gutless while others say the 74 and newer sucked.
@@quincee3376 73-74 SD was the same eng. 75 on up sucked wind, no matter what the youth of America think. I guess you can say the 4th gen T/As with the LS electronic controlled motors are in a class of their own, if you like electronic cars. And Jeff Wilson is spot on with his facts.

4:10 "Gas-charged shocks" I own and have experienced TAs of this era (1970-1974) and they all featured the Delco oil filled (and leaking) grey 'Spiral' shocks with no factory substitutes offered- except the Koni shocks in the first generation Firebird. Sounds like a cool thing to say though.
Awesome vehicle, die hard Pontiac man here, did beyond what the Camaro could do, cause Camaro never had a big block like Pontiac, and the styling of the Pontiac was far superior, Camaro got cult status because it was cheaper for The masses, which if 50 factory workers yell down to 25 white collar guys, Chevy is better, well that's how rumors start, not truth, but hey, it worked

No such thing as a Pontiac "big block". The Camaro on the other hand did offer a 396 (402) big block in the SS. The Trans Am is a better package in my opinion.
A couple mistakes here are the 455 H.O. decal on the shaker flap and that flap is functional.
Camaro was released before firebirds and it had big blocks in 1st gen

This was the pony car in 1971 to go toe to toe with the outrageous Mustang Boss 351. Their performances are quite similar. I'm not quite sure though, how the small-block Chrysler pony cars faired to these two.
Although the ironic screaming chicken is more recognizable and certainly more famous there is something good about the saying "less is more" in this case.

Though I love my 79 with the Superbird and the wild graphics, this is a SWEET ride Timeless look Way ahead-of-its-time! reason why so many automakers are trying to recreate the look of the past and as far as not being perfect LMAO,😂 cars especially sports cars were made to be driven if you want a trailer Queen just to look at and Say Ohh Ahhh, go buy a painting and hang it on the wall.✌😎
The 1973/74 Trans am 455 SD was the meanest looking factory muscle car in my opinion, and many other people's too.. Yeah , it only made 290hp from the dealer with emissions going crazy at the time and manufacturers not yet realizing how to bring the power back, but that is where the aftermarket comes in. It's not a hugely expensive or difficult proposition to get 1 HP per cubic inch out of these motors

You rarely see a manual transmission high performance Pontiac, because most of those that bought them new, bought them for the looks. I'm not saying that Pontiac didn't build performance, I'm saying that the gear heads tended to gravitate towards Chevrolet and Mopar.

The crank was not Forged! Pontiac only ever offered a forged unit in the 421 Super Duty motors. they were a cast nodular unit.

John Oliveri4 Pomtiac engines all used the same size block.
Pontiacs all used the same sized blocks for the most part. Displacement was determined by the cylinder bore and crankshaft stroke. Cubic inches and torque are what matters on the street and the 455 H.O. is a monster!
