Spain’s 15-year-old Princess Leonor attends first solo engagement

- Spain's crown princess Leonor attended on Wednesday (March 24) her first solo engagement at a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the foundation of Spain's Cervantes Institute.
A small group of supporters were waiting in front of the building behind a banner reading "The future is Leonor" and cheered as the princess got out from the official car.
Leonor waved to her supporters after greeting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo.
The heir to Spain's throne was led to a security chamber where she received a copy of the Spanish constitution and the "The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha." The princess put the books into a customized deposit box with her name on it before walking to a conference room to attend the ceremony.
During the event, the 15-year-old princess requested the microphone to ask about the Cervantes Institute's workers that are living abroad and have not been able to return to Spain over the last year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Cervantes Institute is a non-profitable organization which promotes the study and teaching of the Spanish language.

Since Covid, it can cause such awkward situations when you can't shake hands but I find it very nice and respectful that they are putting their hands on their chests when they are being introduced to others, like if they were truly happy to meet them regardless the contacless greetings. It seems like it's developed in Spain as I've seen almost everyone doing this in this video.

As awkward and gut wrenching as this may be for a 15 year old to be on her own, this is her duty as future Queen. She has a whole lot of responsibility on her that a lot of us can’t fathom. I’m sure she will have the support of her loving parents and sister along the way. And she did this engagement with elegance!

Being the firstborn l don’t think she has any other choice. But she does seem to be happy doing it at the moment. It seems to me though that 15 is quite young to do a solo engagement. I would’ve expected at least 18. She needs more time to do her own thing first and form her own character.

She's currently first in line to the throne so one day she'll be the queen of Spain, that's why it's an important appearance for her. If you go visit the stock exchange in Madrid you will see all spanish provinces represented equally in paintings and you will see the Philippnes, Guam, Cuba and Puertorico represented there at the same level as any other spanish province. You dont see that in the British empire. The Spanish saw Philipines as an integral part of the country.
