IN VIETNAM, we did the tire breakdown and tube repair using a pick Madoc. When you fpatched the tube and went to install the tire on the rim, you place the split rim facing the ground when airing it up. 1/2 hr

#1, more soap. Thats the cheap part. #2 when you get the lock to split drive it in the direction of the lock. You want to separate it from the rim. By driving it with a hammer you expand it off the lock ridge. Make sure you clean all the corosion off of it prior to remounting. And use a cage or safty chain.

are you going to sand blast those rims and paint them now is time to do it also when ready to reassy. used corn starch inside each tire to ease the friction tween tire and tube keeps tubes from having a fold in them------ this info is for new guys learning the ropes

Mike, you are a trooper, sounds like the sinuses are killing you! I do know some old Vietnamese "papasans" that are chuckling right now! We alwaysused WD40 as the penetrant/lubricant. Beadblast and powdercoat those rims and they will be better than new.

Dave and I have both had tires where the bead stuck so tight that some of it ripped off the tire and stayed with the rim.

did that type of job back in the 70's. not fun. all we had was a tire sledge and big pry bars. didnt use cage or chains when inflating. lucky to still have my head.

I just did 2, on there for 50 years. The only way I found to work was cutting the tires.

So far I have only changed one NDT on my 53 M37. I didn't have to break the bead...?? The ring easily separated from the tire, ( although I did fight separating the ring from the rim). And the tire was easily separated from the rim.
Do you think there might be something wrong with my rim?

When you first started to remove the lock ring, never let go of your tire bar that thing could have flung and popped you square in the face.

That's a locking ring, split ring not split rim.
