  • A review of the Rowin Twin Looper, and a long talk about how and why I chose it and what looper pedal I had before.
    As always, much better if listened to through decent headphones or speakers
    (I talk for literally 12 minutes about this and other pedals, so for sounds and pedal in action, jump to 12 minute mark ....but please do watch the whole thing as I honestly feel the journey as to why this pedal was chosen is as important as the pedal itself.)
    A recent piece that makes heavy use of this pedal using the techniques shown in the video:

    I got this pedal because of your video. I love looper pedals. I make a lot of post rock/ ambient music, so looper/reverb/delay are essential . This pedals reverse mode and speed control make it an absolute buy. Loop something and mess with the speed and you’ll find amazing sounds that will inspire .

      Yep, this pedal might be cheap and often overlooked, but the reverse and time speed up/slow down features are awesome. Perfect for ambient, post rock, shoe gaze and drone kind of stuff.

      Yeah the manuals on some of those budget pedals aren't great. To be blunt, it's usually a very broken English which (saying this personally as an English speaker) can be difficult. I have the Donner version lol. Used to use a DL4 and it kinda annoyed me that i had a pedal with 10 delays that i never used and the 'twin' looper has all the features i want and it was the price of a boost pedal or something. I am debating buying two more just so when it inevitably blows up I can have another. Good review! 👍

      I still don't understand why it's so difficult to find a looper pedal that can do the combination of backwards/forwards, multiple speeds rather than just half speed, have completely separate stereo inputs and outputs, and have separate record and stop switches.
      Ah well.

    I have a Lekato looper which is a good looper and the one I started on. I then went to extremes and got the Boss RC300. If you want to record multiple tracks or perhaps separate loops for verse, chorus, bridge then it’s brilliant. For the most part I only need one track but still found myself using the Boss beast simply because I could turn the loop off with a single click. (I hope my use of the word click doesn’t bring back too many unpleasant memories) Your video has helped me decide that I will get the Rowin. Thank you for your review.

  • @1oolabob
    @1oolabob Před 8 měsíci +1

    I have a Digitech JamMan Stereo looper that is the bigger version of the same looper you didn't like, and has the same issues you didn't like. It also has a reverse feature; a thing you did like, and I like that too. It does not have a way to adjust the tempo (not really a priority for me) or anything to do with effects. The built-in rhythm machine? Ugh. I never turn the volume up. I could safely pry the volume knob off, cut off the stem, and weld a piece of metal over the hole where the knob was.
    Now, the clicky pedal: most of the time the sound of tapping the loop/play/stop pedal doesn't bother me, because most of the time I record loops from keyboards or guitar without a microphone, so the looper doesn't capture the click sound. But once in a while, I want to loop something acoustic and use a mic, so I did a simple modification. I cut some thin bits of 1/2" diameter foam pipe insulation to make little pads that go over the stomp buttons and soften the click sound. It took some trial and error to get these bits of insulation thick enough to damp the click, but not so thick that they make the stomp buttons hard to click.
    Anyway, I'm looking at other loopers again because I made a major mistake: I watched Reggie Watts do live looping, and he's SO GOOD. Reggie uses a looper with multiple channels. It lets him create arrangements by making loops that can be faded in and out, and mixed (live) in different ways. He often only uses his voice to make entire pieces. Of course, Reggie Watts has an amazing voice, and a nice Nord keyboard for backup in case he gets a sore throat or something.
    Loopers with multiple loop channels are few and expensive, but I know that's what I want from my next looper.
    Um, and a nice Nord keyboard, and a four-octave vocal range, and great hair.
    Until then, at least I have my sense of humor.

The "Change" setting on the left hand switch inverts the Left and Right channels which can be useful for effect chains or dual amp situations.

    Thanks for this demo. The speed knob is insane. Why not start with slowest speed to the left, normal at dead center, and faster to the right? It just makes no sense as it is now.

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 4 lety +2

      Hello there. Thank you for watching!
      I would agree with you on the positioning of the knob. I guess it just gets down to it being made pretty cheaply and probably not a whole lot of thought went into the design. You can actually start recording with the knob in the center position and you would still get the same effect. But yes, it would have made sense to design it that way in the first place.
      Now, what I would really love to see is a looper with a speed control that is smooth rather than stepped. This looper, as shown in the video, has a stepped speed control, but to have something that's would operate smoothly would be magical. Kind of like slowing down or speeding up a good old-fashioned cassette as some recorders would allow you to. Or even the sound of slowing down as the battery slowly died. Apparently that would take a lot of processing power though. I know the Tensor from Red Panda has a smooth speed control, but it's only 4.8 seconds of looping. So it's more for accents and minor effects. I would still love to have one of those though. That thing looks amazing. If you or anyone else knows of a full function looper that has a smooth speed control, let me know!
      Thanks again for watching!

      EHX Memory Man w/Hazarai does all this looping, with the smooth speed control and reverse loop.
      It also has delay and/or reverb, with a tone knob for the effect (it also does the Sun Records famous slapback "reverb on the repeat only, not the original signal" thing). It has a beautiful tape flange tone I've never heard another pedal do (sweep from "normal" to deep flange and back to "normal", so it sounds like someone accidentally leaned on your reel to reel (or the acid is kicking in)). It has backwards delay (mix out the original and sound like your from Mars). At any point during these effects, you can switch the white knob (with your foot, notice where it's located) to loop mode and absolutely create scenery. Then go back switch effects and play over it or add into more loops. That pedal is awesome! Unfortunately, I had to sell it to buy food lol. I'm starting to gather up gear again, and this looper is on my list (I always pictured an extra looper, and thought 2 EHXs would be over the top ($). Thanks for the vid!

    @mw9558 Před 2 lety +1

    Great video, better than the manual for sure! One thing I cannot find about this pedal.
    Will this looper playback overdubs with the 'Speed' effect enabled?
    Or does it playback the latest overdub track at normal (real-time) speed?
    In other words, would it be possible to:
    (1) Record a guitar as a loop
    (2) Enable the 'Speed' effect (to make the loop slower and sound like a bass guitar)
    (3) Record an overdub on guitar (while the 'Speed' effect is active)
    (4) Have the looper playback the 'bass guitar' and real-time guitar combined.

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 2 lety +2

      Yep! If I understand you correctly, this is exactly how it works. When a speed altered loop is playing back, the pedal will just record what it hears when recording overdubs. It doesn’t care where that speed dial is, it just records what it hears. Things might get a little bit out of control if you did a whole lot of overdubs with the speed control in different positions, but I guess that’s the fun of this really cool but kind of strange pedal!
      Hopefully all of this makes some sense.

      Regarding plugging it in through effects pedals, it's much like any guitar, synth or any instrument or sound source; play it through and the effect will do its thing. Simple! A best practice, though, is to do any effects after the looper, that way you still have the clean signal. Effects before the looper will imprint that effect on the loop. Make sense?

      Well damn, that sucks. At least eBay got you your money back. That's one of the sad things with buying budget gear. Usually there's very little quality control and the company itself might be impossible to get a hold of. Rowin is probably just a very small branch off of an enormous Chinese company. Good luck with any future looper purchases you make, especially if you give this one another go.
      It's also a good lesson for others; to buy this kind of thing from a big company like eBay or Amazon. Someone who will have a pretty robust money back and return policy, because tech help and warranty support direct from a company like this is probably not existent.

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes you can! But understand that’s an easy way to get everything kind of messed up.
      Well actually, you can do it with the pitch but I don’t believe doing that with the reverse function would work. Reverse just puts the whole collection of loops and overdubs into reverse. It’s more of a global function. But changing pitches/playback speed is easy between overdubs and it’s something that I’ve done. You’d probably have to keep the careful watch to make sure things don’t get too out of control!
      Also, bear in mind that, according to quite a few comments for this video, some of the recent models of this pedal seem to have some digital noise clipping. Maybe it’s just an issue with the input volume or maybe there are some quality control issues. Either way, this video is a couple of years old and my pedal is not exhibiting any of these problems. Maybe it’s a luck of the draw thing.

      @thedigitallost  Před 4 lety +1

      Are you talking about external effects like using effects pedals?
      If so, using effects pedals before or after the looper will effect things differently. Like, if you have effects pedals BEFORE the looper those effects will be locked to the loop. If you have effects pedals AFTER a looper. That way you have a clean loop that can be altered with pedals any way you wish.
      Sometimes, if I want different effects on the different parts of the one loop I will use the different left and right inputs outputs and do it that way. They are independent channels but still locked into the original loops timing. I actually have two of these same loopers now so I can affect things differently.
      Does this make sense? Am I even going in the correct direction? I hope so! Feel free to follow up with other details or even in a different language. I'll try and work it out with you. Cheers!

    I got this pedal based on your video! I love it. HOWEVER... how do I record a loop, then click a button and continue recording / stacking on the loop? Like if I'm trying to make a droning note or a held chord - right now, I've got to fade in/fade out the chord, end loop record, then record AGAIN to start layering... or else there's that sudden stop of noise when I clicked the button. I hope this makes sense.

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 2 lety +1

      I think I understand what you’re saying. Like, when the loop ends and starts again there’s a noticeable click or attack sound? So it doesn’t stay smooth like a long drone?
      What I do is record the drone that I want and then start another loop towards the end of the original loop. I then let that record through the start point of the original loop. If that makes any sense.
      If you’re getting excessive clicking noises at the start of the loop then I would maybe look at the input volume level. If you’re still getting excessive click sounds then maybe you have a faulty looper.
      This video is a couple of years old now, but I still use mine and it works great. Unfortunately with some of these budget pedals the quality control and consistency is a little off. Some people like me get lucky and have them work perfectly, but sadly, some people seem to have problems. A few people have left comments for this video saying similar things, like their pedal is not working as they expected or they were getting excessive noises and strange functions. I’m not saying you’re having a problem with yours, but it’s something to consider.

      Honestly, I still like it, but I'm just not doing a whole lot of looping these days.
      In saying that, I still think it's an absolute steal of a pedal. With how I like to do things, I just love that combination of multiple speeds rather than just half speed (like many loopers have), having the reverse, and also having a separate stop and start switch. I see loopers at 2 or 3 times the price that don't do half of what this thing does.
      And that price!
      I mean, of course it doesn't have that rock solid build quality of a Boss pedal for instance, but for the price I have no major concerns.
      It does all the conventional looping stuff, but really that combination of different speeds and reverse does the ambient thing I do in the video so well. I do not own any other looper, never really found the need or desire to replace this one, and I'm more than happy to use this on the occasions that I do want to do some looping.

It's a bit of a long story but I'm looking to potentially unload my current looper (the Digitech Jamman - first generation). It's actually a really good looper but I don't even come close to using all its features/functionality.
      I think I'd actually be fine with a much simpler (and smaller) interface and have it take up less space on a pedal board too. I also want to buy an inexpensive delay too and buy selling the Jamman, I should be able to afford both.

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, I had a Jamman and wasn't a fan.
      I'm not sure what delay you might want, but for all my talking up of this Rowin looper, they released a delay in the same form factor and it was terrible. Super noisy, barely usable algorithms. Maybe I got a dud unit, but I returned it and was put off trying again.
      I do have some reviews of super cheap delays here on my channel. All of them a bit bizarre and extremely cheap. None of them I'd use regularly or seriously. I've used a load of delays, but I always come back to the Electro-Harmonix Canyon. It's not too expensive, and it just has some mojo that I love.

      @@thedigitallost The thing that started me off on my research was actually the Grand Canyon by EHX because it's delay and looper in one :-) But then I started seeing these cheaper pedals and thinking that they sounded really good.

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not immediately familiar with that pedal but I'll definitely look it up. I love random cheap gear!
      I've been looking at the Grand Canyon Delay, just as a bit of an upgrade from my current pedal. But there is one single thing holding me back and it's a purely functional reason: the delay time knob on the regular Canyon is very sensitive, even just breathing on it seems to make it change and the knobs are quite close together. I'm always just brushing past it and changing the delay time. Now, I got my hands on a Grand Canyon at a local music store a little while ago and the knobs on that one were even smaller and closer! I'm not writing it off yet, but it has made me think twice.
      That might seem a little bit pedantic, but I really love playing with knobs as things are playing out and nudging the time delay knob on the regular Canyon is really frustrating. I just fear that I might be doing it even more with the Grand Canyon. So, I still have the regular Canyon and will probably just happily keep using that until I see something I like more or decide that I can live with the close knobs on the Grand Canyon. I do love all those algorithms and love Electro-Harmonix pedals.

And it might have been my pedal but there was a definite clicking sound when I hit the foot switch. I wanted to like it but I just couldn't. Another question: why is it called twin? Does it has two channels? How do you change between em

    • @thedigitallost
      @thedigitallost  Před 4 lety +2

      I think the twin refers to the 2 channels. The 2 channels are, basically, 2 separate left/right channels that can be recorded, or looped, independently. Both loops play back at the same time, but each has its own volume control. Independent playback can be controlled that way.
      To record the loops separately, just have your guitar/synth plugged into the left channel, save your loop, unplug from the left channel and then plug into the right channel and the already recorded left channel loop will not be affected. Each left/right channel has its own separate output too. So, for example, if there is nothing pugged into the right output, the right output will not be heard.
      I hope this makes sense! Feel free to ask any further questions if you need to. Cheers!

    • @thedigitallost

      Yeah, the only way to really have 2 loops is to "record" them on the separate left and right channels. Each loop will be tied to each other's length, but they're still technically separate. If that makes sense.
      You can save loops via the micro USB connection on the back to a laptop, but that is nothing I've ever done, nor can I see that being helpful in any way for a performance.

      Yes you can connect pretty much any electric keyboard or synthesizer! This video only demonstrates keyboard instruments. Just connect the keyboard's output to the looper with a regular instrument cable. Being a guitar pedal, this pedal uses quarter inch guitar cables and most, not all, but most keyboards and synthesizers use quarter out jacks as well. Some keyboards and synthesizers might use a 3.5 mm output, but there are special cables and adapters that are easily found to remedy that situation.
      This information should cover just about every keyboard and synthesizer out there.
      Connecting a guitar will be much the same. Just use a standard quarter inch guitar/instrument cable. If you are using an acoustic guitar that does not have a pickup, then you'll need to connect a microphone that also has a quarter inch plug at the end.

      Yep. As in, it isn't just mono that comes out of both left and right outputs. Each left/right input is individual, each has it's own volume control and each has it's own output. What's nice, as well, is that you can record your first loop on, say, the left channel, then unplug from the left input, plug into the right input and record a completely different overdub on that right channel and fade them in and out with the individual volume controls. Effectively giving you 2 different loops at the same time that can be controlled independently. The only limitation is that the 2nd loop/overdub will be tied into the original loop's length, which is to be expected and doesn't bother me, personally, at all.

      The USB socket on the back allows you to connect the looper to a laptop and save loops, or load previously saved loops back onto the pedal. I think you have to use a special app to do it. I've never actually done it myself.
      If you wanted to delete a loop, you need to hold down the looper button while your loop is playing. If you have only recorded one layer with no overdubs, then the whole thing will be deleted. If you have overdubbed additional layers, holding down the looper button deletes each layer that you've added on one at a time. This is handy for if you have already saved quite a few overdubs but mess one up. You can delete the most recent one and do it again.
      If there is no loop currently playing, then holding down the looper button deletes all loops and overdubs, no matter what.

      Thanks for watching!

    Is it a true bypass pedal or not?

      Apparently it is. I have no reason to doubt that as I noticed no loss of volume or tone playing through the pedal when it's not activated.

    This pedal makes a digital peak sound when playing through, on or off. Low sound quality. Sad cuz other than that i like the pedal.

      How do you mean? Like, a digital artifact sound at certain frequencies?

      Ha! Nah, there are worse! I like the features but honestly, these budget pedals can crap out very quickly, and I think I got extremely lucky in finding one that’s still going. I like it!

      @@thedigitallost that’s cool man. I just used one of these live for a couple months but it just progressively got worse and worse until I finally tossed it.
