Jonah, it is an amazing video crossing timelines of history of the black child and the playful times of children. The position of an older woman playing with a younger child, an aunt or grandmother as you will is such a vivid memory for me as a child playing hand games and ring games. This is such a pure moment of the "brown skin girl" growing up. Powerful song and video.

Another way to look at this is that many or too many black women for a variety of reasons, like colorism, don’t accept themselves. For children who haven’t reached the age or haven’t had their beauty reinforced by those that look and love this song resonates.

To me, the debutante ball scene reflects the balls they would have in New Orleans in which the girls had to be of a specific hue (extremely light; almost white). The young ladies in the ball are beautiful for they saw their beauty. The little girl was in awe of their beauty; looking down on her own for she only saw her dark melanin. This is exceptional for the here and now for its been passed down for years how others feel “lighter is better” (especially passed down from slavery). So at the end, the little girl is now a debutante for she has accepted and loves who she is, who she represents, and knows her story. Self-love is so beautiful until someone plants that seed diminishing their self-worth and their power (great segue for Black is King has a song called Power referencing the same).
You are confusing quadroon balls with debutante balls. Quadroon Balls- women of color attended lavish dances with the hope of forming a plaçage relationships with eligible white men. But the historic practice of plaçage relationships between white men and free women of color were legally binding contractual agreements, drawn up in the presence of a notary public. The Black community still has these debutante balls/ cotillions in my home state every year.
I feel like Beyoncé is also the perfect person to have done this song because of the power she possesses and then advocating for something a ton of black women all around the world struggle with finding confidence and beauty in their skin is amazing ❤️

So Beyoncé gives us this Amazing Song about embracing your skin colour with pride but BOLLYWOOD literally releases a Racist Song titled ‘Beyoncé Sharma Jayegi’ which means ‘ Beyoncé will feel Ashamed/Shy away’.
