      I'm wondering if, because the barrel has a tapered contour, plus threaded, there is deflection taking place at the muzzle. After installing the tuner, it added extra mass at the muzzle, eliminating the deflection.

    I took one of these from a customer who,was equally frustrated. I installed a 24” heavy barrel and pillar bedded the action. He took it to an ARA match and shot a perfect match I won’t crash your channel with my information but I think it supports the concept of heavier profile barrels dampening harmonics and tightening what are well shaped groups but larger than MOA

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Absolutely. You can definitely see the tuner calmed down the barrel harmonics for sure. And like I said in the video, I didn’t have much luck with the tuner on heavy barrels. When I found a setting I thought was good it wasn’t repeatable so I gave up on it. But on this barrel it has been amazing.

  • @EagleEyeShooting
    @EagleEyeShooting Před 3 měsíci +3

    It goes to show, these contour barrels just like to see weight on the muzzle to reduce cross velocity. You would get the same results just using stick-on wheel weights. The minor micro adjustments on the tuner makes no difference over a large SD group size

    If Bergara sent the rifle to you, maybe they would be willing to build one to your specs. Your other Bergara (B14) is a shooting machine. The Bergara's are also doing very well in the St. Patrick's day challenge, Eli put on. It's got me to thinking I need to buy one!!! Good video. That tuner made a big difference.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci

      It did, but as a lot of the guys are commenting, it’s a shame to have to put a tuner on it to get it to shoot. But the B14r tuners are not required. There shooters right out of the box. Mine has been trouble free.

  • @jimdavis1124
    @jimdavis1124 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Good video on Bergara BMR and the EC Tuner. If your groups are stringing, lengthen the tuner if they are round shorten the tuner. It usually works that way. A tuner can tune out small variations in velocity but will not compensate for a bad bullet/cartridge.

    Hey Don, I've shot tuners for several year now. I've been a big fan of Harrell's and have I think 4 now, all Harrells. Our procedure is to use 1 1/2" to 2" pasters and put 9 on a 8 1/2x11 paper. We shoot at 100 and to save bucks we only shoot 3 round groups. I do not know how ECs are calibrated but the Harrells will go up to 5 on the main shaft and the barrel goes uo to 20. We will shoot groups like this 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, etc. all the way until we run out of numeration. That way when we are finished we can lay the targets out side by side and easily see what the gun likes. It's not that unusual to see the tuner favor 2 sweet spots, like 1.3 and 5.2. This has worked with all our LR target rifles.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci

      So once you have your 2 settings the rifle likes, when you turn the tuner back to that setting is it repeatable? The EC is not, at-least not on the barrels I tried it on. Maybe this one will be different since it’s a thinner profile barrel.

    Great video. It’s wild to see the groups move with a tuner. Only downside of it is the backlash and not being repeatable reliably. The new ec tuner with the spring is supposed to remedy that.
    I’d also love to see a cz457 video on barrel torque and action torque.
    I’ve got a picky mtr that I cannot get to shoot worth a crap without a ton of action torque

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci +1

      My CZ457 is in a MDT XRS and that stock requires about 80in lbs. and it shoots the best at that torque. Some stocks take more than others. Now a wood stock I wouldn’t take it even close to that. I think tuners work better on smaller diameter barrels that are more prone to whipping. That’s why I wasn’t having much luck on my heavy barrels. There much stiffer and less prone to whipping.

    Bergara never intended the BMR to be a match rifle, it’s a hunting rifle! The factory stock is designed to be light for hiking around. A 3/4” group is plenty accurate enough for hunting or plinking around. If you want better accuracy, buy a match rifle. This accuracy complaint is the equivalent of buying a minivan and taking it to a racetrack and complaining it doesn’t corner well like a Ferrari. Every tool has a purpose! Thanks for the demonstrating the tuner, though.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I’ve tried that Limbsaver product on several rifles, that CZ457 .22 magnum with the thin barrel profile and it did nothing. I moved it up and down the barrel with absolutely no change. I’ve used it on several other rifles too with no good results. Problem with that Limbsaver is there’s no weight to it and while it may reduce some vibration in the barrel it does nothing for whip. Putting weight on the end of a barrel is the most effective way to reduce whip. If I can find it, I’ll throw it on there and see what happens. But I’m not expecting much.

Maybe that's a test, take a rifle the shoots well and see if the Limbsaver will fine tune it. If it doesn't work out at least it's good content for the channel. When you say half inch groups - is that at 50
    yards, or is this really 1.1” at 100 yards?

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Half at 50. And that doesn’t Necessarily transmit to 1.1” at 100 yards. Could be better, could be worse. Depends on the ammunition.

    Would you have to tune a tuner to each different kinds of rounds or set it once and it should be fine with different rounds.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci

      Actually maybe someone with more tuner experience could answer that question. I haven’t had this kind of luck with tuners on heavy barrels. This is the first time I’ve had this kind of success and it’s a thinner profile barrel. The bull barrels have less flex and do not benefit as much as the smaller profile barrels.

    Can you get a good cheek weld with the pro varmit stock? I’ve never used the Boyd’s stock

    I have an EC Tuner sitting in the drawer...

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That’s where mine was. My heavy barrels didn’t benefit much if at all with it. But, just putting that weight on the end of the barrel really calmed the whip of that light weight barrel and well you can see the results.

    Bergara (or any other manufacturer) don’t send us guns on a try/buy, we’ve had to accurise all our guns over the years. Load development for centre fires and barrel tuning for rimfires is normal.

    • @RimfireSS
      @RimfireSS  Před 3 měsíci

      It wasn’t a try/buy. They sent it for a review. If I like it I can buy it at a discount. Out of the 15 rimfire rifles I have this was the very first that benefited from a tuner. But it was the first one I have that wouldn’t shoot also.

    I don't want to be *that* guy, but a Begara BMR runs, what...$500-600? An EC tuner is about $150? That's a considerable add to a price just to get it to shoot acceptably.
    That said, I'm glad it's shooting better for you.
