I always found this particular idea of Da Vinci to be fascinating. As a history buff, the implications on how history may have changed drastically had he decided to perfect his original design. Even more fun is actually trying to imagine just how that perfected renaissance era tank would look like.

Nice work - solid analysis. Interesting on the academic outlook that DaVinci had the wheels going in opposite directions so that the plan couldn't be misused. Well, maybe. But I think it's more plausible that this was a sketch and he had not thought it through fully enough.

I don't think davinci envisaged this as anything like a modern tank, but rather as a mobile strong -point to be moved into position prior to battle and used to break up an enemy attack in a manner somewhat akin to the venetian galleasses at the battle of lepanto.

Also gotta take into consideration of the recoil of those cannons. Those cannons will recoil 3-6 feet back. I don’t think wood alone can hold a cannon in place due to the immense recoil. Maybe if the tank has 1 or 2 guns then maybe but they’ll need lots of room for the recoil. I feel like all those guns will be pre-loaded then taken into battle because it takes about 3-6 people to operator a cannon. I can’t imagine how it big it needs to be to fit all those people and how heavy it must’ve been if built in a bigger size.

War wagons were not uncommon in da Vinci's time. The tank design is basically a fortified artillery piece. However, cannons attack from a distance, and are generally behind allied soldiers to begin with. It is not really a "tank" because a tank functions similar to heavy cavalry, in that in moves quickly and can break through positions. A tank needs reasonably good mobility, firepower, and armor.

Oddly enough, if built the way he drew it, Da Vinci’s tank would not have been able to move at all because the cranks were set in opposite directions. It is uncharacteristic of the clever man to make such an obvious error, indicating to some scholars that he either built this flaw into the design to protect it from being stolen or because he was a pacifist at heart and hated warfare. However, others can argue that Da Vinci loved animals, and would have wanted his tank to function as it would have effectively replaced the use of elephants on the battlefield.

But it just not a tank ,and I can see tank is a much comfortable word to say, write, etc. But still is not a tank. Instead of "fighting vehicle".
Perhaps a better ,short & comfortable word to call it ,and more Acuturate ,would be "Da Vinci's A.F.V."
A.F.V. as in "Armoured Fighting vehicle".
