When Stan Rogers first released this song, it was so well-received there was some discussion of making it Canada's national anthem.

This Stan Rogers song is very well known in Canada. If you started singing it in a bar in Halifax the whole place would join right in. Singing strong and hearty with a couple tears in their eyes.

There's fiddle and acoustic guitar in most of Stan's songs. The way this song was recorded makes more sense if you understand the context: The enormity of the task of finding the Northwest Passage, the hundreds of lives lost in the pursuit, the isolation and fragility of the explorers in the totally unforgiving Arctic. It's a reverent hymn.

When I searched for reactions to Stan Rogers I never expected to find a video related to metal, but I'm happy to see this. I'm a long time Stan Rogers fan, and don't really know anything about metal, but it's awesome that they took this and did something interesting with it. And her voice is great, even if it isn't musically my kind of thing.

Brittney Slayes on the video for “Northwest Passage”:
“The song is about touring across Canada, and equating it with being on those early expeditions that sought the Northwest Passage hundreds of years ago. Stan Rogers, who wrote and recorded the original, imagined that in another life he himself may have been an explorer, braving the unknown to satisfy a deep-seated need for danger and excitement. We took his words and put a bit of a sci-fi spin on them… What if in another life UTA had never existed? What if the band had different members? What would change if we were just friends and never bandmates? What if those timelines converged?... What follows is a video of infinite possibilities, infinite universes smashing into one another and battling for prominence. Which timeline is true? Which UTA will win? Is it the UTA you know and love, or perhaps something a bit more sinister? You’ll have to watch and find out!”

yeah she used Highlander as an example, but in my mind the video tells more of the story of Jet Lee's "The One"

Doesn’t get much more folk/power metal than that. It was ok for me. Felt like i was on a trek through the fields of the northern regions of iceland. Or some mountains with some goats by my side. She does have a good voice.

if you like Stan's voice, you should check out the One Warm Line documentary, where there are some shots of him singing some songs live, including this song, and he is just so much more dynamic live...you get to feel the depth of his voice and the stories he is telling much better

It's true! I have an album of live versions of his songs and I infinitely prefer them over his studio recorded versions. Barrett's Privateers is one example where I look for a specific performance, but it's hard to find on CZcams, unfortunately. (It's on Spotify!)

I really Love this song. I'm not Canadian.🇨🇦 I'm American with many Canadian friends. 💕 And this would be an amazing National Anthem.
Sadly, Stan Rodgers died in June of 1983, 2 years after this recording, at our airport. Absolutely heartbreaking! Poor people who died that day break my heart. 💕🙏 from 🇺🇸

They aren't ignoring UTA, they've simply got so many subscribers making so many requests that UTA doesn't come around in the rotation very often. They've got TONS of coverage on reaction channels though. In point of fact, reaction channels on CZcams could be partially credited for "Apex" getting so much exposure.

This song hit me really hard for some reason. It reminded me so much of home, and I totally didn't expect it from UTA. No idea what the video is about (if you rewatch it there's a bunch of strange stuff going on even before she splits into 4 on the stage) but the song itself I've had stuck in my head for like 3 days now

We who live in northern and western Canada can so associate the lines "Making one warm line through a land so wide and savage" . A very felicitous description of the vast, empty ruggedness of the land.

Love the reactions by the way. They aren't way too laid back, but not overly critical like you're a vocal coach or expert. Also! I think Unleash the Archers - "Tonight We Ride" and "Awakening" is probably a bit closer to your usual taste in metal from what I have seen on the channel.

Stan Rogers was born in Ontario of parents from Nova Scotia on Canada's east coast. Unleash the Archers are from my home town of Victoria on Canada's west coast, 6000 kms from Nova Scotia. This is truly a Northwest Passage review of this song.

Unleash the Archers version is a little too upbeat considering the subject matter. The Franklin Expedition was not a particularly happy undertaking, and the results were far from desirable. I prefer Stan's version simply because it give weight to the event.

Swedish band. Not that known. Lefay or Morgana Lefay (same band, two names, long story) is another power metal band with some thrash and doomy bits to maybe check out. One of the very few pm bands that I can tolerate. I Am, End of Living, When Gargoyles Fly and Cimmerian Dream are some of their tracks imo.

  • @robdas1

It's a sea shanti, not a folk song. It doesn't need any "extra oomph".

If you get the chance to reacts to this artist, I’d highly recommend “Full Metal” by BvdLvd. It’s a very interesting song, similar from ScarLxrd who are both from the UK. I do not know if they know each other but I want to know your opinions on the song. It’s very interesting and a very “out there” song.
