Moreover, all the animation of this short was done by one guy: Roland Crandall. It was apparently a reward from the Fleischer brothers for his years of dedication and loyalty to the studio; I suppose it was a passion project.
For the people who are commenting about how amazing the animation is: rothoscoping Calloway's movement gave us this masterpiece, Old Mant Of The Mauntain and Minnie The Moocher
Cab Calloway was amazing. He did songs for a number of Betty Boop cartoons. Even when he got old, he still had it. His performance of "Minnie the Moocher" was one of the highlights of The Blues Brothers.
People are saying that the animation is great for the time, but what people don’t realise that this animation was created by Max and Dave Fleicher, who patented the rotoscope, so they could capture real human movement. When you see creativity like this, you realize exactly how far we have fallen. Greed, laziness, and corruption have dumbed us down to the point of mass idiocy. The generation that produced these cartoons were clever beyond our understanding.
The amazing thing is this rotoscoping is some of the only film of Cab Calloway at his height. Most theaters wouldn't show a film of a black man in any sort of leading role, so they used these great performers in cartoons.
Cab Calloway has better dance moves than other dancers in the world. He's the Michael Jackson of his time ever since he did the Moonwalk before he [Jackson] was born.
I actually want to hear the opinions of someone who *was* there in the theater when this was new. They'd have to be at least 96 to 105 years old, though it might only _just_ be possible. A rare few people have gotten up to 115 years old, after all.
These old animations are so... amusing.... and lively! There's so much movement in _everything._ Usually I find old stuff like this cringy lol, but there's just something about animation in its infancy that makes it timeless.
Roland Crandall was a hyper-adroit animator, as he provided nearly all drawings on this animated film. He should be mentioned as one of the greatest animators who ever lived. Truly outstanding character animation, and in 1933, for crying out loud!
All the silent-screen stars are dead and I'm not creeped out when I watch their movies. Death is a natural part of life, no one can avoid it, so best to just appreciate the great art that they made so they will always be remembered.

The amazing thing is this rotoscoping is some of the only film of Cab Calloway at his height. Most theaters wouldn't show a film of a black man in any sort of leading role, so they used these great performers in cartoons.
Douglas Berry Betty I'd also based off a black woman look it up
KAMIKAZE she is based of two women. Helen Kane and Esther Jones
Cab Calloway has better dance moves than other dancers in the world. He's the Michael Jackson of his time ever since he did the Moonwalk before he [Jackson] was born.
HOW is this from 1933? - incredible piece of art.
Rotoscope animation
@@nightman4142Koko was definitely rotoscoped using Cab Calloway's movements. The other characters were not.
I like the way 1930's cartoon characters move!
man, this must have absolutely killed it in '33
still does today
I actually want to hear the opinions of someone who *was* there in the theater when this was new. They'd have to be at least 96 to 105 years old, though it might only _just_ be possible. A rare few people have gotten up to 115 years old, after all.

These old animations are so... amusing.... and lively! There's so much movement in _everything._ Usually I find old stuff like this cringy lol, but there's just something about animation in its infancy that makes it timeless.
Shit even though this is 87 years old it’s still entertaining and amazing to this day

Remember when Pewdiepie used these as transitions?
Time Remap that’s why i’m here omg hello fellow fan
lol yepp
@@PVNCHES101 glad to see others
And here we see 9 years old in their natural habitat. Fascinating
@@crystaltrees4013 i was born to be a 9 year old.
Roland Crandall was a hyper-adroit animator, as he provided nearly all drawings on this animated film. He should be mentioned as one of the greatest animators who ever lived. Truly outstanding character animation, and in 1933, for crying out loud!
Open bobs
Thanks for the information btw
And also the uncredited inbetweeners
Most scariest thing is that all creators of this movie are dead😰😰
I mean yeah I guess since this was made in 1933 and it’s 2020 the creators would be like 100 plus years old.
@@janirwin16 I don’t think so. My grandma was born in 1942 and shes 78 so those people are in they early 90s so yeah their prolly dead.
All the silent-screen stars are dead and I'm not creeped out when I watch their movies. Death is a natural part of life, no one can avoid it, so best to just appreciate the great art that they made so they will always be remembered.
This short inspires creativity and wonder for me. It’s amazing, it’s dark yet fun. I’m glad I can see these old films in 2023.
The animation is pretty smooth for it's time
Well it was done tracing video frames
CJess nigga watch’s vox lmfao
Actually it’s the opposite, old animations often had more frames and detail than contemporary mass produced cheap
Cartoons.

Ask me if I give a fuck..
Oh wow Cab's voice is just amazing can't get enough of it, definitely the best part of the cartoon.
When you realize that everyone who was apart of the cast is now dead
oh shit that makes my heart ache
They'd be on Guinness book of world records if they were still living aye
Well.. it was a long time ago so yeah they all lived good lives
that clown's part was cold bro holy

I didn't expect his singing to be so good lol
I love how surreal this is. The Fleischer cartoons were definitely an outlier in their time.
