A Triple-Header of 1960s Formula Racing - Revisiting rFactor2

  • Monaco, Spa, Monza, a steering wheel and three pedals - It doesn't get much more pure than this. It's been almost 10 years since this trio of tracks and beautiful formula cars were released along with rFactor 2 as its launch content. And upon its launch in 2012 it maybe could not be appreciated as much as it is today. Now that rFactor 2 has received numerous updates, and we're all running better hardware, the stock content can be seen for what it really was. So a revisit today to rFactor 2's stock content and what it has to offer. For my money it's some of the best offline racing to be found in Sim Racing today.

    AC’s classic Monza had the bankings laser-scanned before the repavement that was made a few years ago, so they actually reproduce the original surface

    • @Logan912
      @Logan912 Před 2 lety +16

      Yes, but it was the original surface after decades of neglect and use by rallycross, so it’s still not 100% accurate to how it would’ve been in the early days, but it’s still cool nonetheless.

    • @Zonda1996
      @Zonda1996 Před 2 lety +4

      @@Logan912 Yeah I was thinking surely the original surface had buckled and made for a more unstable drive by that point. The bumps in AC feel super sketchy for most cars.

    The unique thing about rf2 is you can race at a great rendition of the classic layouts of Monaco, Spa and Monza, and then race a more modern formula car like the 2011 Marussia around a laser scanned version of Monaco, Spa and Monza.
    Mad how you can see how the tracks have changed from the drivers’ POV

  • @6665hitm4k3r

    These were the tracks and cars that got me into rF2. I still remeber a video with the Matra F1 at Spa being shown before release and it was a rush compared to anything been released until that point. Then when I first got to try it, this combination sold me on the the whole product, instantly. Let's be honest, those cars and tracks definitley need an update with the new track tech and shaders in rF2 and it's a shame that we still have to see the modern Corvette SC in the pits. But the driving sensation is still great, even after ten years with no substantial updates to those cars and tracks. Luckily modders and Reiza with their DLC have added a few more historic tracks over the years.

  • @MsZeeZed
    @MsZeeZed Před 2 lety +3

    The Grand Prix film very much brought to mind here with pals Phil Hill & Richie Ginther’s on-board footage from F3 cars at these 3 actual ‘65 circuits. I was fortunate to see this in 70mm Cinerama and the full immersion of that huge screen wrapping your peripheral vision, with a 6-track roaring audio, catapults you down these roads.
    That experience bleeds into the immediacy of this one, with these 3 monumental RF2 tracks, as I still got the chills to see you sliding on the Monaco quay, go blasting through the Eifel & hit that huge bump on the Monza banking on that terrifying, Sarti-esque opening lap & then you lose the championship by a nose between two other cars out of your sight, with an “Oh well”.
    Very Spirit of ‘66 😺

    • @MsZeeZed
      @MsZeeZed Před 2 lety +2

      Almost everything in that film is based on a true event from the previous 15 years of Grand Prix racing. For instance ‘Sarti’ is drawn from Ascari who survived plunging into the harbour at the Monaco ‘55 GP only to be killed in testing a few days later, at the Monza corner now named for him. However, ‘Sarti’s’ death is more like Jean Behra at AVUS and it was a different F1 driver who left his wife after a season-long affair with a journalist & then died in an accident the next season. Even the crashes at Spa you see from the helicopter are real and unplanned, with a sudden rainstorm causing two of the stunt drivers to wipe out, one of them breaking his shoulder. Combined that with Phil Hill & Richie Ginther driving around with ground breaking radio-controlled cameras on their F3 cars at Monaco, Spa & the Monza banking as well as the ‘Stoddart’ character wearing Jackie Stewart’s helmet colors because the actor couldn’t drive so its really Stewart under that face mask whenever you see him drive his car. The film is as real as can be & its odd to me that the plot is sometimes dismissed as a melodrama when in reality they just didn’t bother to make any of it up.

      It’s amazing to me to see all the great vintage leagues using rf2.
      A highlight for me was watching the historic sim racing league that Jake promoted.
      I watched his onboard streams and the amazing race broadcasts at least 10 times each!
      They just have that specific feeling to them that makes me feel comfortable and at home.
      They perfectly portrait the rfactor2 vintage mod feeling to me and I’m very happy that this event happened.
      A little offtopic here, but still about rf2:
      What made me love RFactor2 even more was changing my Fanatec Podium DD1 wheelbase to a Simucube 2 pro.
      With the Simucube you can feel every little crack in the road and every little pebble when you put one wheel off track.
      I can nie perfectly feel when the tires start sliding and where exactly the grip ends and sliding begins.
      With the fanatec I thought I felt everything possible and I was absolutely satisfied.
      Until I tried the Simucube and couldn’t believe how it can be even better!

    GP Laps brings me great joy. I'm so loving this content. The late Episcopal priest and Jungian analyst John Sanford, said once that the ethic of the kingdom of God is not obedience as is commonly thought, rather creativity. That statement always stuck with me, and I'm reminded of it whenever being witness to remarkable creativity as is the case here with GP Laps.
    I am building a 6DOF motion platform racecar simulator. I am looking forward to its completion so I can join in on this vintage racing fun. I had a gaming computer built specifically for this. I'm fixin to turn this endeavor into a CZcams channel. I may have mentioned this already in a previous comment. My dad Barrey Robles raced a GT-350 R model at Riverside a few times back before I was born. I'd like to re-create that for him. I got a Simucube wheelbase, Racewerk hydraulic pedals, VNM shifter, Sparco seat and a Buttkicker haptics system. The 6DOF is a system by PT-Actuator. They are a sponsor of my upcoming channel. I will certainly be mentioning and paying great honor to GP Laps on my channel. Thank you for this labor of love.

    Nice and just did a couple of laps in AMS2 Beta around Monza 10k with chicane before I discovered your video😀 I also did a couple of laps in rF2 now (EVE F1, Monza) and the track-surface is really very bumpy from the FFB. My SimuCube 2 ripped out of my hands while driving straight while the FFB was rather too soft in the corners to be true. Otherwise it isn't that different and I prefer the handling in AMS2 while drifting quite a lot through corners, but only on the throttle. Might be due to setup since rF2 felt much softer and unstable driving straight, which usually is more forgiving in corners. Reducing driving height helped a bit, but I didn't tweak the suspension and differential to get more out of it. In AMS2 the Lotus is the most edgy on the limit and better avoid it (unlike Jochen Rindt😶). The Ferrari is better in both Vintage Classes and much quicker around Monza, the Brabham even more forgiving, but too slow on straights.

    The left-hander at the top of the hill at Monaco is Massenet, named for a well-known artist. Somewhere along there, there's actually a statue of him that was erected.
    I'm glad that the newer, more accurate versions of Old Spa have the banked Stavelot and the corner before it separated. That turn before Stavelot proper is Holowell, and sometimes the straight after the Masta Kink is referred to as the Holowell Straight.
    The left-hander where Variente Ascari is now was called Vialone.
    I think the North Banking had to be more built up, since the road course goes underneath it, but as I recall, the South Banking is half dug into the ground and half built up on concrete columns.
    Not as sure about banking, but the Lesmos definitely used to be quite a bit quicker than they are these days. The last notable revision I think was made for the 2000 season.
    I guess you could do the Australian GP at Longford.
    Yeah, I can't think just right off what other classic tracks there are in rF2 that would be good with the big cars.

      Massenet is a composer, not an artist.

      Clearly, it's been just a bit too long since I looked him up.

    I think it would be appreciated if you man in depth tutorials about the files that need to be adjusted to get the best racing for several series, example NASCAR, IndyCar, in the game. This game is okay overall however all the incredible features and nuances of this game are muted by the fact of bad offline racing. A lot of people race online however there is twice as many of us that race offline due to several reasons such as work and just life schedule in general. When you don't how to set this game up and tweak the files, for a lot of us it's too much work.

    You should do the same thing with AMS 2 that actually realesed Monza dlc soon..Ams 2's historic tracks and cars way better than rfactor 2 and have lots of choices...

    Like & appreciate all you did but I think/ feel that because of all the amount of tweeking needed with files . RF2 isn't a great sim. Not a lot of users understand major file tweeking.

    Turbocharged/Supercharged straight-4 powered F2 car on The Triple Headers is where men separated from the boys and gods. You maybe good. but you're far from greatest.

    I rewatched that Monaco preview video they made a hundred times, I was looking forward to what RF2 had in store so much. It was soul crushingly disappointing to see development go absolutely nowhere for years, while all the competition kept improving in one way or another, just for them to release it to a terrible subscription service. On top of that, the graphics and UI were such an eyesore that the "finished" version was basically dead on arrival. There's no doubt the physics were great, but when the entire sim racing community says "no thanks, we're moving on", that's proof that the developer catastrophically messed up.
    I tried it again after it was sold to Studio 397, and spent a day of agony installing it and the mods that I was interested in, just to be let down again by what I believe to still be the worst UI in all of sim racing. After finally getting into a car and seeing those out of date graphics, the disappointment came rushing back, and even though the old grand prix cars drive really well around those old tracks, Rfactor 2 just isn't the historic sim racing game I was hoping it would become.
