Ed King is playing lead guitar here. There is no slide in Sweet Home Alabama, and the lion's share of Skynyrd's slide duties were typically the work of Gary Rossington (Freebird) or Steve Gaines (T for Texas). The only Skynyrd song I can think of off the top of my head that King played slide on was Ballad of Curtis Loewe.

Not only are the rules more conducive to just flat hard licks, the talent pool is much, much larger in the states. Skynyrd is an area of particular reverence, because my father roadied for them for a time back when they were still called One Percent.
