Very nicely done. Like the solo, the discovery flight is really memorable. Thrilling, a bit unsettling, and so many thoughts of what training will be like. The main feeling: holy moly, this is really cool. :)

Well I don't have a discovery story to share. I do have one experience in a small aircraft. Got to go up in an old Korean War era "Bubble Bell" helicopter for an aerial tour of the Washington coast near Ocean Shores. Was an interesting flight but didn't do much for me as while I know the physics of how helicopters fly in my mind they shouldn't.
Wish I knew more about the whole PPL process when I was younger. Might have gotten to do a discovery flight when I would have fit into a GA aircraft more easily. Not sure how well I would do now as I'm 6'4" and way over weight. Also a lot of my height is in my torso so seat height in most cars is too high. I usually have at most 2" of head room and can usually cant see the traffic signals when first in line at a stop light. 'Bout the only vehicle that i have been truly comfortable in has been a semi-truck.
Still i have a love for flight and enjoy this kind of video. Seeing people discover the joy of flight is amazing. Some of the videos I have seen the "student" is shocked that they are the one that is doing all the control inputs and start out tense but gradually relax as the instructor is just talking to them. Had a similar experience driving a semi in a strong crosswind for the first time. Kansas can be brutal.

My first Discovery flight did not go as well as you treated this young pilot. I flew out of Lake in the Hills airport in Illinois, and my teacher for that flight decided it would be great fun to see how I reacted to a 60 degree turn. I was a little ill, but stayed with the plane and did not get physically sick. (early Saturday morning, no breakfast yet). after a few months period, I decided to get another Discovery flight with a different instructor. What a difference! He was positive, assuring, and what I really liked about him as an instructor, was he would "hide" three pieces of tape on the airplane prior to inspection. If I did not find all three pieces, we did not take off, because I had not inspected the airplane properly. To this day I remember that rule. When I have been able to fly, I look at everything! Great job Second guy. I believe you Chris, are a very very good instructor, and have these future pilots feeling their aircraft as an extension of themselves, so they know to pay attention when the airplane does something unplanned. Keep up the great work on your channel and in your life. Be well.

Could never afford to get my ppl, but did take one demo flight in a katana...and flew with several friends in their aircraft and had more time at the controls. I'm 63 and hope I can still achieve my dream one day...but it's nice to watch others achieving theirs! What a beautiful place to learn how to fly...though I imagine winters must be brutal. I remember my discovery flight. I was doing some standard rate turns (though I didn't know it at the time.) I was so focused on being dumbfounded at the views that I didn't even pay attention to the instruments. I remember the instructor saying calmly, "ok we've lost about 500' on that turn." I have no idea how this girl managed to focus on a takeoff for the first time haha

  • @davidhughes3505

    Great video.
As a kid,I went up for many rides at our local small airport. When new owners took over there weren't any rides, but only Discovery flights.
Of course a 17 year old couldn't afford lessons, however they offered me a part time job evenings and weekends-office and snack bar cleaning, washing planes, etc.
For every 8 hours I worked, I got a lesson, alternating between ground school
( with books included), trainer and an occasional flight. Not bad pay in 1972.
Unfortunately, my mom decided my high school diploma was more important, so it went by the way side.
Over the years I be taken a flew other flights, but helicopters replaced the planes.
Lots of rides all over and some stick time in R22s and R44s over the years.
At 67, it's all behind me now, that's why enjoy these videos.

Great video Chris! My first discovery flight was 1976 out of Midway Airport. My late wife and I were driving by Midway, it was not busy then, she went up with one instructor in a Cessna 150 I went up with another. It was a bumpy day, she hated it, I loved it. Went on to get my commercial, instrument, and CFII within a year. Took me about another year to get her up in the air again. Eventually she would go places with me, even to Alaska. She never liked going for the hundred dollar hamburger, (which back then was about 50 bucks). Oh by the way, the cost of a discovery flight then was $10.
