No one taught Snowball how to dance. He just began dancing one day and has become more elaborate as time passes.

Totally love this! I showed it to my dad when visiting him at his care home - he has dementia -- he laughed and laughed, and sat there moving his legs in time to the cockatoo's! Thank you!!!

As I was filming him for research, he sent a chill up my spine when I watched him pause in dancing, analyze the dance pattern we were doing, and then change it so we would look more symmetrical. To see the intelligence in his eyes gives me goose bumps.

What's amazing is from 1:21 - 1:23 when Snowball actually pauses to listen to the change in tempo, then at 1:24 starts back up synched with it. If there were ever a question about intelligence, there's your answer right there.

This bird's something special. Tons of birds dance, some birds have SOME sense of rhythm, but they always lose rhythm partway. This is the only bird I've ever seen that holds near perfect rhythm. When Snowball DOES lose rhythm, it's immediatly corrected. Snowball even switches up the dance moves at high and low parts of the song.
Incredible. It's like watching a human in bird body dance.

@Tnem56 Snowball began dancing on his own...he isn't trained at all. He dances when he feels like it which is practically 100% of the time when people are watching him. He just loves to show off for the attention.

@doeme53 Snowball created another new dance move a few weeks ago. He has combined his usual "head twirl" with lifting his wings for a very dramatic dance move. He loves the verbal praises when he dances, so I believe this explains why he continues to think up more dance moves and loves to dance in front of others. He thrives on the attention and praises. Many cockatoos love to dance...this seems to be something most cockatoos have in common (appreciation of music).

I watch this video nearly everyday or when I've had a bad day. This bird is awesome!
We have set him in front of a mirror and he has watched himself, but nothing else out of the ordinary with regard to dance moves. He does 'invent' new dance moves over time. Scientists have labeled and documented 17 dance moves so far.

Did you know that we are studying Snowball in our neurobiology/neuropsychology classes in Bordeaux, France? He's a famous bird and a proof that non-human animals can synchronize to a musical beat! I only chanced on this video upon the recommendation of a professor!

We've heard of "rock and roll hoochie coo," but Snowball is the first "rock and roll cockatoo." It's good to see he is so happy and healthy with you. I've seen that some birds do not take so well to being placed with different humans. I have a friend with a bare-eyed 'too, and they are wonderful birds.
