Its pretty clear that Russian loses are higher though, from 3-5x as high as Ukraines losses. That is why Ukraine has not withdrawn, when they always could have. They see a good chance to severely bleed the Russian army, that is frontally attacking a heavily fortified position, sited on good defensive ground.

Bakhmut is a city of great significance
Because if russian troops get all over this place they can reach Kramatorsk agglomeration with their artillery - the main fortified area of Ukrainian Eastern army. And some other places.
If this happen then Ukrainian offensive will be very problematic.
That's why commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi came into conflict with Zelenski in February this year to not retreat from this place.

The number of Troops Kyiv has sent to reinforce Bachmut is an indication of the weakness of the forces in Kyiv's section.....
The movement of Troops from near the Polish Border to Bachmut, appears to indicate the fragile status of Kyiv, in the presentation of the conflict?
The ability to defend Borders in three directions seems to extend Kyiv's Forces over a lot of area and the ability to support the continued effort to fight against Russian Artillery, appears to be more than Backhoes can overcome?
As in Avdivka, where the Rail connection has been exposed to Russian Troops front line, and their Artillery, the ability to supply that City with the Ammunition that has been shooting holes in Donetsk Schools for 9 years is slowly grinding to a halt.
The ability to resist a major push from Russian offense appears to be limited and the numbers of Kyiv's Troops appears to be slowly reduced by the overpowering amount of Russian Artillery.
It is true that Tanks do exist within the fortifications that Kyiv had dug along the front line. But Tanks without Fuel that allows them to move are merely targets, or Lawn Ornaments with a cannon. They may still have a few rounds of ammunition, but without fuel they appear to be simply a metal coffin.
Russia has unplugged the Ukraine Rail Network and little fuel is left to operate Armor as the logistics system is now using the 30 locomotives that the Ukraine Railway system bought in 2018, that allow the use of fuel to support logistics, but limit the amount that is available for any offensive move by Kyiv since November.
Logistics were a problem for Hitler as well when he decided to appropriate Caspian Oil to operate his efforts to dominate the World. Hitler learned a harsh lesson when he attempted to overcome Russia.
The US apparently is now facing a very difficult lesson to understand as once again Russia displays what they learned from the last few times the Western Empires attempted to invade Russia.
Naroleon left most of his Grand Army of the Republic scattered along the road back to France, clutching their Booty to their frozen Bodies.
The Britisn buried a Half Milion in Balaclava, to allow them to maintain control of their India Colony.
Wall Street is now witness to what happens to the Greedy when they attempt to overcome Russia.
The propaganda battles rage on but the facts prove that you need more than lies to win a war.....

@@danielhutchinson6604 "The US apparently is now facing a very difficult lesson to understand as once again Russia displays what they learned from the last few times the Western Empires attempted to invade Russia." Actually, it's the other way around.
Russia is learning the hard way how difficult it is for them to invade Ukraine (which bore much of the brunt of previous invasions against Russia, by the way). In reality, it's Russia's logistics that are having serious issues. Ukraine's logistics have held up better. Ukraine isn't invading Russia; Russia is invading Ukraine and that is why Russia is struggling. All of this has been known since day one of the "special military operation" and it has only become more obvious over the course of more than a year. They've lost more than *half* the territory they stole from Ukraine in the first few months; Putin is clearly loosing.

@@danielhutchinson6604 The true, common denominator when considering invasion military forces, and homeland defending military forces is that those who are defending their homeland have a natural advantage, most every time.
In this war, it is Mr Putin's Russian Federation that are the invading military force, and citing historical battlegrounds that Russia soundly defeated foreign military invasions is a contradictory statement, because at this moment, it is Russia that is on the opposite side of being invaded. They are the invaders.
Much of Russia's previous success at defending against foreign invasion military forces was within Ukraine. Russia has no morale, societal, or national defence advantage here... That is all Ukraine. And even if Ukraine has to fight with rocks, shovels, pitchforks, etc... they are fighting to defend their very existence as a sovereign nation, and society. That is a definite advantage that Mr Putin's military is devoid of, and will not have any measure of during this war.

The retention of Bakhmut was important because its capture creates a gap in the ring of fortress cities. After Bakhmut, the neighboring cities of Seversk and Chas Yar will inevitably be taken. But if something can't be held, it's better to give it away. One glance at the map is enough to understand that it is pointless to hold Bakhmut. But Bakhmut holds on. The West tells Zelensky what he will do. Zelensky performs. The West needs Bakhmut to stand, as his fall will cause a negative reaction from the Western population. Wagner uses it. By creating conditions in which you will be able to defend the city, only suffering huge losses. Which is what happened. Three or four more Bakhmuts, and in Ukraine, banal, there will be no soldiers to fight. Articles in the Western media are more important than this Ukraine itself. It will collapse, creating positive informational reasons.

@Andres Vargas No, Russia is losing. Its offensive at the beginning of the war has been stopped, and in the northern areas repelled completely.
Russia has lost most of its modern tanks, and is now forced to rely older models. Most of the Russian military might, not counting its navy and nuclear warheads, has either been lost or heavily damaged to the point where it can not be repaired enough to use it again.
Russia has sustained HEAVY CASUALTIES. Even more than Ukraine. Unless you count civilians. Russia has been DELIBERATELY targeting civilians, which is a war crime. Vladimir Putin, LITERALLY, has an arrest warrant from the United Nations.
There is NO WAY that Russia is going to successfully conquer Ukraine. Even if it did. Vladimir Putin has made the Russian Federation a pariah country, that the majority of the world sees as a rogue nation. Its reputation has been ruined for the next few or more decades, and its economy is being crippled by extreme sanctions.

Nothing strategic about Bakhmut when the major UKR lines of defence lie on higher ground to the west. It' importance is to drain away the RF and PMC forces through high attrition and create a battle ground vacuum whereupon the UKR could drive through a counter offensive spearhead. But the most pivotal UKR city in the whole of the war will be Melitopol which would not only close the RF logiistic lines north, south and east but open up a two-prong attack , one south to the Crimea and the other east to Mariupol. There is a likelihood that a clever counter encirclement by UKR of the RF and PMC north and south salients at Bakhmut could occur but the lack of effective close air support (such as A-10) inhibits this tactical manoeuvre.

Russia has taken 17 - 20% of Ukraine, how is that failed operation? They tried to overthrow the government with 100k soldiers in the north against 3 - 4 million UA conscripts and soldiers. They could not pull through such numbers so they made a tactical retreat and gained over 17 - 20% of Ukraine.

Same, been reading about it for many months already. Let them try again, I guess Ukraine will "solve" the problem of russian crime statistics by eliminating every single prisoner they're sending to Ukraine with Wagner. In any case, we need to work together if we want this nightmare to end finally. Providing more support to Ukrainian army is the right way to go.

that is not really important - as long as the front line stays there cause the hinterland is safe and protected and not destroyed like this city.
That is the big difference between the world wars while the first was a fight along a small frontline (at least in the west, while in the east it was still a moving frontline and war theater till the end in 1917) the second world war destroyed a far bigger area and even whole countries that afterwards looked like Bakhmut now, a whole country with its dozens of million population not a single city of 70.000
This is a war and we all know that war look like this as we had seen in iraq or vietnam before with all the Napalm & agent orange.
It is not a negotiation along a long table, it is the fight to survive at the lowest level: only the stronger will survive

Regardless of the military significance or lack of military significance, Bakhmut will soon fall to the Russians. In the last week, Wagner and other Russian forces have almost taken all of Central Bakhmut. Western Bakhmut is all that is left. The remaining Western Bakhmut areas come under concentrated Russian attack within the next week.
There can no longer be any orderly Ukrainian retreat from Bakhmut since the Russians have fire control over all the roads leading into/out of Bakhmut.
