I’m Dr Kerrie Sandgren, working here at the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute.
During the pandemic, we learned firsthand the importance of protecting ourselves through vaccination.
In 2021 alone, COVID 19 vaccines saved the lives of 14 and a half million people.
And whether you know it or not, this may well have been your life or one of your loved ones, particularly your parents or grandparents.
Older adults are more vulnerable to many infectious diseases, as are people whose immune systems are weakened in some way, including by cancer or an organ transplant. Vaccines are more important than ever in protecting these people from life threatening illnesses.
Our work at Sydney ID provides foundational research to develop more powerful vaccines specifically designed to protect our vulnerable loved ones.
We work closely with vaccine development companies to translate this information into real benefits for people.
