  • This is the rest of my Lake State footage taken on trips to the Soo Locks in 1997 and 1998. In1997, brief stops at Bay City are followed by switching at Alpena, then a chase from Gaylord towards Grayling. The following year we caught the Gaylord job at Grayling heading north, then ran into the northbound out of Bay City at West Branch, chasing as far as Roscommon. I only wish I had video when they were still running to Cheboygan and Mackinaw City.

    I just watched this video and I must say it was amazing. The scenes in Grayling and Roscommon were terrific. Great to see LSRC held on to those Alcos for a few more years. Excellent work Fmnut !!!

      unfotrtunately the LSRC line from Bay city to Alpena has seen better days, its an absolutely beautiful route, but the trains on there can't go more than 10mph because they could derail due to the shitty track conditions.

    Wish I could have seen these Alcos. I have a cabin near Gaylord in the area of Michewaye. It is close to the line as it runs along Otsego Lake. I occasionally would see a Lake State Railway train up there, but they are all Geeps these days.

    The Concrete Milepost which read "BC 104" is a leftover from the NYC days.

    As good as LSRC is doing now, I still wish they could have kept at least the 4 C425's, and the M 420's. I understand the parts/ workability level between the Alcos and the EMD'S, but it would be really nice to still see them.

Very cool looking too ......

      I see we have a third engine LSRC #1195 .Love that too...Do you know what model that one is?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 9 lety +1

      At the beginning of the video, the 977 is working Alpena Yard. This is an RS-2 off the D&H, extensively rebuilt as an RS-2m.
      The 1280-181-281-381 are all ex-PRR C425's rebuilt by GE-Hornell as C425m's.
      The 1195 is an ex-N&W RS-11 with a chopped short hood.

    Apparently nobody else got video north of Gaylord either. At least I can’t find any on CZcams. Do you know why the tracks were torn out to Cheboygan?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 6 lety

      Ethan Lamoureux the Charmin plant at Cheboygan closed. There was little or no remaining business left to justify keeping the line north of Gaylord.

    • @ethanlamoureux5306
      @ethanlamoureux5306 Před 6 lety

      Another company bought the plant and reopened it. That’s the sort of thing that happens with factories. I understand why they would not be using the rail line if they had no business on it and couldn’t drum up some business. But why were the tracks torn out while the plant was still standing? Isn’t that line owned by the state of Michigan?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  Před 6 lety +1

      Ethan Lamoureux the new buyer told Lake State RR that they were not interested in rail service, everything would go by truck. The state by that time had fallen on hard times financially and there was no longer the political support for retaining the line for potential business.

    • @ethanlamoureux5306
      @ethanlamoureux5306 Před 6 lety +4

      Trucking is more expensive and inefficient than rail, and becoming much worse. Why would anybody want to do business that way? I can’t see the sense in it.
      I wonder what kind of political discussions will be had when service is wanted and it costs $$$Millions to restore it. Though I suppose they could just let the town die, like so many others. But as trucking becomes more and more expensive due to increased regulations, increasingly congested and hard to maintain highways and high fuel prices, and rail connections become increasingly necessary for anybody doing business in bulk goods, the shortsightedness of those who removed the rails will be felt in our wallets. And we likely will have no choice, except the choice between restoring rail service and slow economic death.
