    Great message. I'd love to be better with my blending. At the moment it feels like I have no exact process but just smear paint until it looks good. I'd like to try out some other people's methods to see if I can get something that's more procedural.

    I'm a noob and I hope by the end of this year I'll be painting my first hobby piece. Your videos are so inspiring to watch, as a 53 year old I feel like I'm rediscovering mini's again. As a kid and teen I created D&D worlds, played DOOM, and wrote code for my own pc gaming pleasure in the late 70"s and through all of the 80's. But life happened in year 89 and I grew up.

    Thank you for the inspiration! I have two sons, Last year I was going through my old Warhammer stuff that I had not touched sins they were born and they had a blast looking at all my minis and I let them play some with them. When going through the old models I got really nostalgic and the urge to start painting again was really strong. Last fall when my oldest son turned 8 we went to Gothenburg and stoped by GW and I bought a small starter set of 40K with the Ultramarines and the Nurgles and we started painting them together and I realized how much I enjoy painting. I started following a lot of miniature painters on instagram and youtube to see what I have missed sins I stopped painting almost 10 tears ago and Boy do people paint som crazy beautiful stuff!!
    I discovered a loot of youtube painters when the Citadel Contrast paints came out and everyone made reviews of them. I especially fell for the Ultramarine you painted. I have always had difficulties painting nice Spacemarine armour but now I have a bunch of Ultramairines and a lot of new inspiration. I saw you were using some kind of bluish green color that looks amazing for the highlighting and the way you place the highlight is new to me. Now I have started to experiment on the Ultramaines to try and achieve a similar effect but with te colors that I got from the starter sets. I'm even going for som NMM for the gold :)
    Really fun to rediscovering the hobby!

    I've been painting for a few months, loving every step of the learning experience.
    What is frustaiting as a beginner is always feeling the need of more and more paints.
    More often than not I found myself not painting because of this. So to try to solve this and keep developing my painting skills i've decided that on my month of holiday (August), I'm going to paint everyday and not buying a single pot of paint. If I don't have a color, I mix others or simply take the risky (and rewarding) route of experimenting.

    • @Pagatang
      @Pagatang Před 4 lety +3

      I started painting again 6 months ago after a 20 year + hiatus and started with the citadel base paint set. First mini was a death guard standard bearer and it came out fine. My point here is that I completely agree with what you have said in terms of colour mixing. The limitation of a basic palette forces you to think and improvise about how to best use what little you have. Now I have a much wider pallet but still only 40 +/- paints and washes which I buy every so often but only when I feel I really can't achieve what I want to with my existing colours. I think that just as in life having it all too quickly actually stops you from learning, screws you up because you don't appreciate what is crap and what is good and it also makes you lazy and uninventive.

    • @gilesholtby1702
      @gilesholtby1702 Před 4 lety +2

      Well you can always just stick with yellow, blue, red, black and white in each “family” of paints (base, layer, ink) then a set of washes and metallics. You can then use those basics to mix colours as you like. The only thing is that getting the colour consistent from one session to another can be tricky.

      the reason might be that the level of the audio was pretty high and youtube put a limiter on it. That made your voice quieter while maintaining the music at the same level.
      Should this problem persist, you might wanna try to lower the master volume while editing and see if this changes something!

    I've just returned to miniature painting this week after 13 long years. Warcry renewd my interest in wargames and with it I rediscovered how deeply I loved painting minis. I did one this week, it was messy but opposed to 13 years ago I dared to try to shade more, to work harder on highlights and I felt like even so much time has passed I have improved just by trying to do more. Your video convinced me to go on this path, to keep trying to do things that previously I used to think were tecniques that only pro painter could do. I will mess up. I will do a lot of mistakes. And I am so looking forward to make messy mistakes and to enjoy every one of them having fun in the process and, maybe, becoming better while I do it. Thanks for the great video!

In 3-4 years I've managed to improve a lot this way, even if I put a new figure next to one from last year, the difference is quite big. I started painting miniatures just about a month ago and due to the fact that I didn´t even know if I would enjoy it, I just started with some robots I had lying around in from a board game (Robo Rallye).
    I had really much fun but I didn´t know if it was enough to call it a hobby...
    ...so I followed by challenging myself to paint my 100 zombies from the game "Zombies!!!".
    I am almost half done, with cheap brushes, extremely cheap paint, learning how colors work together, how much paint is necessary to have a smooth look, how to dry brush, etc.
    The most important thing is just to get paint on your miniatures, whether it´ll look great or awful, at least you can learn something from it and at the end of the day its just a (nice) piece of plastic that you can enjoy...or just move on to the next mini!

Right now I can do pretty good base coats, highlights and details, but I'm really excited now to get into some more advance/technical things. My goals at the moment are glows coming from source lights like a magical spell, darkness as if the model is hidden in shadows or it's night time, and big contrasting gradients such as black-red-blue-white. I recently tried them all on a mage and a rogue I did for dnd and both look pretty terrible, but it feels good knowing another mage I try down the road is going to have a much neater gradient on his robes and more realistic lighting!

    I just got back into painting after a .....20 year break. Yeah yah I know...but, Ive painted a few in the past few days, weeks, Ive def seen myself get better, then I thought, hmm, let me see if there any other dorks like me out there....and I found your channel...I quit. Seriously. Ive never been so humbled in my own mind in seconds. I thought I was doing swell painting the little eyeball with one hair brush...and using household spices for shrubs or sand or whatever. Dude. Im serious. my mind is literally sad right now. Maybe my minis are just too small? What is the size of yours? Thank you so much for raising the bar!!

    So, I started painting again after about 6 years. Picked up some Tau Pathfinders from GW's Warhammer 40k, they were the cheapest per model set I could find that I had any interest in painting and I bought them just to try new stuff out on. The one I'm working on now is entirely new techniques for me; zenithal Undercoating, glazing, magnetizing parts, the whole 9 yards. I screwed up a dry brushing attempt and the dark green glaze I put on, so to "fix" the blotchy armor, I used some liquid mask to cover parts of the armor and layer on some different temperatures of brown to develop a camo pattern, alternating brown and mask so the pattern was completely random but didn't look like disjointed blobs of paint. It wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it looks way better than the uneven green did, and it helped make the undercoat pop a little bit more. I plan on using the water technique from your video about water bases to make a swampy base. Maybe when it's done I'll send you a picture somehow. Anyway, thanks for inspiring my painting with your videos.

    Those inks really did make that mini pop!! Great job! One thing I am focusing on right now is creating better bases. I want my models to really start to tell a story with their appearance, and will be using techniques you have shown along with Marco Frisoni and his indestructible bases video.
    Keep up the great work!!

    Love thus channel! I do want to point something out though that I have seen on a lot of other channels. I totally agree that we should all experiment and keep improving but it's not easy for a great deal of people. Miniatures /warhammer as a hobby is expensive and a lot of people don't have miniatures to waste on unsuccessful/experimental paint jobs. It's much easier for youtubers who get things sent to them etc. Love the channel, love the video. Just wanted to mention this. 👍

    I was amazed to hear how fast your channel was growing, until I checked it out. WOW! amazing paint skills. I will most definitely be breaking my go to paint pallet to try and grow my skills. I've always just tried new things that I see from CZcamsrs. Now it's time to experiment. I've already started going for more extravagant bases, and that has really upped the look of my finished minis. Loved your video on the water splash effect base. Now to experiment with color. Grats on all the attention your channel is getting. It's definitely due to your skills and perfectly laid out tutorial.

    Ive been having a very difficult time getting really involved with painting because of my fears of failing. I need to stop looking at my failures as disasters and start to view them as lessons. Even though i just started watching your channel, i really feel your genuineness and am encouraged to get over that fear stalling ive been doing. As you said if I can learn to paint bravely I will advance and have more fun at a faster rate while painting. Thank you good sir.

      @@SquidmarMiniatures I look forward to fallowing you and learning much. I do have a question about high detail metal miniatures for you, i dont know if you have heard of Infinity the Game by Corvus Belli, but they produce super detailed 25mm futuristic miniatures. Ive been assembling them and trying to figure out a paint scheme that is easy and yet still eye catching. Im having difficulties, due to their complexity, figuring out what colors should go where. Do you have any suggestions on color schemes/tips for someone who gets a little overwhelmed on color placement...... other than just do it. lol

Using your videos as inspiration to get an Armies on Parade GSC force and board completed. Really inspiring stuff, please keep it up

    I literally painted my first mini yesterday and it was a blast. Had only watched a couple youtube videos about basic techniques and i've now stumbled onto a couple different advanced technique channels. I ordered 2 models from hero forge and my challenge for myself is to apply any and all techniques from watching a few of your videos, even if the model doesn't turn out how yours does it's all a learning process. I'm excited to get some different brushes and utilize different washes for different tones.

    Great video man. I'm currently challenging myself by getting into airbrushing and using non-citadel paints and because of that I've fallen in love the "Black" paint from the metallic Vallejo range,
    I plan to expand with more paints from more sources, just to mess around. Also recently bought AoS to supplement my 40K stuff.

    You are abselutely right! I try to find the right balance between comfort and challenge. These days i'm re-purposing an old Iwata HP-C airbrush from the 80's to paint miniatures and it's quite challenging to switch from purely paintbrush to airbrush assisted. last couple of months I tried painting with layers instead of going with my old drybrushing.

    Never tried chipping paint before. Decided to commit whole heartily and done a whole Tau army. It didn't quiet turn out the way i wanted but I have worked with it and am hoping with some shadows airbrushed on and more streaking, it will all tie together. The emotions always try to pull you down when things don't go the way you wanted but you gotta keep pushing to the end to see what the final look will do. I'm not at the end of it yet but everyday the project grows on me. Thanks for the video and always appreciate the actual thoughts and feels you toss into the commentary. Cheers
