Falconry: Are passage accipiters the best falconry birds?

  • In this falconry video I discuss passage accipiters (true hawks/ forest hawks) and why there is an argument for them being the best hunting birds, both by species, age and ease of training as well as success. I also explain why even with all of this being said, most falconers do not fly passage accipiters.

Hey Ben. Want to thank you for your videos, they helped me get into falconry and get my first RedTail! He’s already hopping to the fist after only 4 days!

Thank you, Ben! Sounds amazing to fly a passage accipiter.

The fastest manned bird I ever trapped was a male Gos trapped in early February. He totally got the value of a free meal. From trap to hunting in two weeks.

Amazing. Is that two weeks of full day training. Or only a few hours of training each day?

Hi Ben, thank you so much for your videos I’ve been learning a lot! The reason for my learning is that this past Monday I got myself a passage Sharpshinned hawk. Thanks to your videos I can actually name what it is and it’s current maturity! But it’s been a different situation. I’ll explain, I went outside of my basement apartment Monday morning to find a dead Cedarwaxwing on my steps and underneath my steps was this young Sharpshinned hawk. Best guess is the hawk was chasing the waxwing and both birds ran into the window upstairs and ended up in my stairwell. The small bird was deceased but the hawk was obviously mildly concussed and seem to be favouring his left wing. So I took him to my care - started looking at videos and learning how to help this bird. And it has been a lot of fun so far! After a few days he finally started eating raw chicken has perked up and is now under my supervision roaming around my apartment. Still favouring the wing and although he can jump/ sore from place to place he cannot actually create up Lyft to fly. I hope he with time he will heal and be able to takeoff again but currently I am not sure but will take care of it in the process. I guess I just wanted to ask if there be any recommendations or anything you might offer me to help me in this process. If his wing does not heal so he can fly I am definitely prepared to take care of him indefinitely, and I’ve already enjoyed some time manning//taming him. He seemed to take to me right away and I’m able to pick him up. one day here scampered up my arm and sat on my shoulder for sometime. A Couple of times he’s launched himself from the table to on the top of my head when I was sitting on the couch so it’s been a fun learning process! But yes any help or advice you could give I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you sir and thank you for sharing your knowledge about these beautiful animals!

Cooper's hawk watcher here, we have resident birds for the last 2+ decades here in Mid Michigan. In our experience, at least one of the fledglings and usually only one stays in the "family" area all winter until the mother drives it away at the beginning of the next courtship season. I often see it hunting with the aid of its father. It is usually male but I have seen one or two large females over the years stay the winter.
Has this not been an observed experience for anyone else in the comments or for Ben? It seems like this would be the ideal bird to wait around to trap in late fall if you can locate a courting pair in the Spring.

I consistently find passage coops when car hawking my female family bird coops in the city. They are always female and trying to rob her. I decided to actually trap one on Christmas morning. She hung around the whole time while my husband was sent to fetch the trap. She was exciting to fly. Very fiery spirit compared to my family bird, who I still have! I would take another late trap coops, but right now, I am working on my first imprint.

Flown many coops , my circle of friends have been flying coops for the last 30 years, in my opinion late family group hawk for me . Or very early passage before October. Even with red tails I feel they turn out better trapped early. They are strong, very tame and a relatively clean slate. I still treat them with the same care i give an imprint to minimize potential aggression. And more importantly the best hawk well…if I am in the south eastern USA and squirrels are my most abundant prey nothing is better than a well entered RTH for that scenario. Or rabbit hunting in thick cover accipiters hardly ever do well on rabbits in thick cover .Trying to be unbiased and as objective as possible.

I live in the UK and it illegal to catch or take a bird of prey from the wild you could even be sentenced to prison plus wild goshawks are extremely rear

It’s depend on the falconer at the end, how to treat the falcon.
Different raptors is just different in the hunting style, there is no awful raptor.

No for sure they are not the best birds for falconry but also according to the art of falconry the good falconer should first ask himself what exactly he needs from the bird to do then he will put the plan and choose correctly the best bird for the job hunting, race and show.
