I was privileged to see a couple of these impressive birds at Lewistown, Montana a couple of years ago. I hung around the airport because it looked like they were going to take off. I was watching a young lady working around one of the aircraft, and I thought maybe she was a ramp girl or other support person. Then I saw her climb into the plane and take the left seat ! I laughed at my unintended chauvanism..she was the pilot. !! I got to see her take off. I know you have to be a damn good pilot to fly their missions and I salute that young lady and her fellow pilots !
Growing up with a forester dad in Gander, I used to love watching the old Catalinas fly - what a beautiful plane. As cub scouts we once had one drop a tankload of water not far from us - I'll never forget the plane cruise overhead as the water misted over us - as a kid it was a dream come true!
Yes I liked them too. I have a video on here from 1995 of a CL-215 and a Catalina water bomber before it was retired. Gander Festival of Flight 1995 I believe

uuuuu. oo9ooo9p
Adam Taylor you live in newfoundland so do i
I'm a simple man. I see a Water Bomber video, I click on it. Sometimes twice. Then I follow the recommendations for similar videos even though I have already seen them.
Sneaks under the wires, scoops and shoots. Awesome - and thank you for not killing this with music!
He was way ahead of those wires...
🤣
Oh I agree to the max
Only music we need is the roar of those beautiful engines!
Fire tanker airplanes are so bad ass! I love it. The power, the risk, the reward. So cool.
I love the sound of the general lee horn somewhere in the end, haha. And everything about this plane is absolutely beautiful.
Three guys in an outboard fishing boat almost made this a REALLY interesting video.
Detroit Buckeye like the opening scene from that movie with Richard Dreyfus and John Goodman. Always (I think)
@@sblack48 Correct. "Always", 1989. First thing I thought of when I saw this video.
What an EXCELLENT video! Thanks for sharing!!
Love that engine sound when it climbs!
I swear I never knew that is how they fill up 😂. So cool!
Lol
If "form follows function", that is one beautiful aircraft .
@Randy Baumery Again I say, from an engineering standpoint the purpose of the airframe will determine it's look. A hull for water, high wings (but no struts) to utilize all the fuselage and allow visibility, along with high mounted engines for both water clearance and visibility. The PBYs we reccon. and search/rescue and their design reflected that, so form follows function.
What a great catch and thanks for posting it. Professional pilots for sure wow! Cheers
Excellent video work!
Real skill, real heroes risking their lives to save our forests.
This never gets old. Good thing Viking Air is putting them back into production, Bombardier was really stupid for selling them off.
00:32 Irv, Myron and Claude out fishing and here comes a CL-415. Irv says: "Myron, you best get tuh squeez'in that throttle on the Evinrude an bit harder eh !!"
One has come to western Oregon to help fight our fires. God Bless you and thank you. Watching that glowing red sky and flames approaching our property was a bit concerning.
Probably the best contribution to aeronautics industry Canada has ever made.
Your statement is so True.
I think the DHC-2 Beaver is probably the second because it opens up the back country.
If only they used it today
A very gorgeous aircraft. Would love to experience riding in one of these!
I love the timing of the small engine (maybe a motorcycle) revving up as the plane lifst up from the water.
Bubba Davis outboard boat motor from the boat filming this.
Excellent video. What a beautiful aircraft. Greetings from the UK.
Thanks. Have a great summer
what a super video thanks for sharing your view
Lindo d + , perfeito !
Love their unique paint job!
We call it the "peas and carrots" paint scheme
My friend works on these planes, he loves it.
I LOVE this aircraft!
I like the red and white! It's a symbol of the Canadian Flag!
Beautiful an amazing machine!
I see this and I think of the films, Always (1989) and Magnolia (2000). What skill though to maintain control of the aircraft and one's composure.
This reminds me of the show Spin tales!!! Miss that show.
Amazing. I know nothing about piloting but I bet it’s not an easy feat to fill it while keeping everything else in check
Canada is awesome, thank you Canadians!
+SweetBlue Cannabis You are very welcome!
SweetBlue Cannabis i
Yes It is , and Canadian too 😁
Excellent work making this video. Nice, very nice
Thanks. In the right place at the right time I guess.
You may wish to update the title. The CL215, 415 and now 415 EAF and in a couple years he 515 are now Viking Air Ltd. In its quasi-bankrupctcy, Bombardeir sold all their plane assets (except business jet, not done yet), and the ex Canadair water bombers went to Viking Air. Viking Air also got discontinued de Havilland planes like the Twin Otter (Viking restarted production of those with updated model).
Upon getting the CL215/415 from Bombardier, Viking quickly started the 215 tro 415 upgrade programme where a 215 gets turboprop engines (215 was pioston) , updated avionics, and greater water capacity. These are called the 415-EAF. Viking also started a 515 project to update the 415 tro more modern materials/standards etc,.
Viking Air is a sister company to deHavilland Canada which got the Dash-8 from Bombardier.
It is called DHC 515 Amphibious firefighter/ Waterbomber now.
The project is in full swing now.
The first of many DHC 515 is scheduled to be rolled out of De Havilland Aircraft Canada Calgary facility in 2026!
@@Aviation-PlaneSpotter Thanks for the update. The Viking web site didn't ispire confidence the project would take off with plenty of orders, And with all the firest fire disasters around the world, I would have hoped they would would be up there waiving hands with "hey, we have a solution with the CL515, order it now !"
Superb water collection and drop off
Amazing plane :) Great pilots
It's correct to say either in my view... it's a Canadair designed aircraft that Bombardier continued producing after acquiring Canadair so, while Bombardier would now have a legal right to put their name on it, it's not "incorrect" to alternatively say Canadair as that's just a tribute to the type's history. Interesting to note that in its original radial engine configuration (i.e. Canada CL-215), it had four of exactly the same engine (two inline coupled in each nacelle, each pair driving a single prop) that powered the famous Grumman F6F Hellcat during WW2.
Holy fuck.
Thats why the F6F was so stout.
Now Viking.
Wow it fills fast. You can tell how heavier it got by the way it moves after too
Fantastic video!!
Canada builds the coolest aircraft!
love those folks in canada.
best friends the usa ever had.
i love those folks
Reminds me of the opening seen from the movie "Always." They even managed to get the boat in the foreground!
it looks great!
That is a thing of beauty.
She flies a lot slower with 150 gallons of water on board! Majestic
150?
@@raincoast9010 Yeah. Try 1650 gallons capacity for the CL-415. 1300 gallons in the earlier CL-215. 150. lol
@bend3rbot The CL-415 has a water capacity of 1650 gallons.
What a cool plane. It looks like it's made of Lego :D
More great Canadian inventions
Now it's Viking Aircraft!
Thanks. Just does not have the sound of the old CL-215 piston engine radial. But the 415s outperform the 215s so they are better.
Nice Video!
Great video
A thing of beauty.
at 00:30 I am reminded of that lake scene in the move ALWAYS!
Cool vid👍
WOW so cool!
Yes I see what you mean, actually. They sacrificed looks for function on these I think. Great water bomber though. I also have videos of the CL-215 with the radial piston engines, which sounds cooler.
There's around 12,000 #'s difference in just a few seconds! That has to be 2 different types of flying with 1 aircraft! Oh and that little boat,,,,, kinda trolling fast aren't you! Great video.
That boat right there was like the begining scene of the movie Always.
Do they do this as preventative maintenance anywhere? And I don't mean a fire is raging 2 miles down wind kind of preventative maintenance.
very good video !!!
Don't get me wrong; I think it looks great!
Damn, that was fucking awesome!
That's a lot of weight to pick up. Good job.
Water weighs 64 pounds per cubic feet.
Man what a great shot! folks in da boat! at least one was wearing a life jacket...i think lol
Yeah we love you guys too. So much so in fact we are all buying houses in Florida and Arizona. Sorry about that little brush-up in 1812, lol.
Sounds just like the dash8s most likely the same engine variant!
Hey mate, is it OK to feature your clip in a my chanel for educational purposes (so-called temporary copyright.)? You can stop me from using your content at any time and it will be deleted immediately.
It will be credited in the description & comments section with your name. Thanks, MM
1:32 The General Lee
LISTEN
Yeeehaaaa!!!! Jump that airplane, Bo!
Some seriously awesome people. Boaters playing chicken with a plane, motorcyclist that saw it coming and took off, general lee, and lastly the person with mega cajones flying that plane. Hahaha. So much to love.
The guys in the boat were never in any danger, these boys know how to fly, and it can tear up the ground and un root trees while dropping it’s 6 ton of water.
Von Richtofen would approve of the paint scheme : )
I've been watch the Spanish and Maroccan pilots in the Rif Valley, Marocco the last couple of summers. Those pilots could drop a coin down a well that's next to a cliff in a storm and keep coming back doing it until dusk. Maybe one coin by diving straight down, another one dropped into it simply while flying over at speed, and so on. Altruistic adrenaline junkies doing stunts with heavily laden agile beasts like this while saving my not so agile arthritic rescue horse and donkeys. Pretty cool.
Cool beans!
This plane is the greatest thing since the SR-71. Bombing forest fires with freshly scooped lake water is fucking awesome.
Did three minutes circuits with the 215 when the fire was that close...all day long!
Jeepers who is the brilliant one in the tiny boat?
CUAL ES CORREO DE LA FABRICA DE ESTOS AVIONES CL 415 BOMBARDIER
australia needs these
0:28 holy shit, hit the afterburner!!
And just like that, Bill lost his boating license for driving directly in front of a Sea Plane
Pilots got "Balls of Steel"...
Not really...I had a hard time staying awake after 50 scoops(we did a hundred a day, one each three minutes in the conditions shown above)
reminds me of the opening scenes in that movie about aerial fire fighting with Richard Dreyfuss in it
Always.
Super Scooper!
Ever wonder how the missing scuba diver ended up being found on the side of the mountain after the folks returned to their homes near los angeles a few years ago. Now you know.
This at Paddy's Pond Newfoundland
need these in Australia in numbers
Spektakularne .
The guy that just finished making his fire for his camp that took 4 hours to make: 🗿
1:35 Good to see that nobody made fun of the firefighting plane just because it came early.
Yes take the water and get the/that fire out 👨🏻🚒
I bet the Bomber caught more fish in the few seconds it picked up water then those guys fishing all day
I looked for this to try and figure out how they did it, but i did absolutely nothing to help.
Was this plane based on a grumman albatross?
I read a story once about firefighters in the woods who found a dead scuba diver in a tree.
Not sure if it's urban legend.
must be a legend. I doubt if the diver would be small enough to fit thru the water pick-up nozzles.
Legend. The 2 pick up points on a CL415 are about 6 inches square.
in greece where we have huge wildfires we have some of these but very old *8 CL215 - 4 CL415...major drawback they can't fly under windy conditions at more than 7 bfr cant fly especialy the 215 when the ground/air temp is more than 38 degrees C. Extreme wildfires with heat up to 39 and more than 7bfr winds and giand smoke clouds obscurrring the sky and ground they can't do much...and if the sea has winds to 8 bfr they cant get water easily...prefer the erickson skycrane where it can beat 8bfr but if exceeds to more is more difficult as well. Earlier during 2007, 2008, 2009,2012, 2013 where we had large/catastrophic wildfires the first hours where winds were blowing like hell under heat conditions more than 40 degrees C fire fronts were 25 to more than 40km long ... ground crews had to do the job... just impossible as fire fronts circulate like giant tornadoes. (Zacharo wildfire - Elia perfecture - 2007 - 48 deaths - 450.000 acres ) This is very tough and things are very hard if there are different wildfires across the continent or greek islands. Greece is mountainous and steep mountains with pines makes wildfires run like hell. In 2007 where the wildfires in peloponissos were extreme megafires (more than 1.500.000 acres burned in only 3 firestorm days - 70 people died - 200 villages badly damaged - total loss during that summer 3.000.000 acres 80 deaths - more than 400 villages/communities affected) greek canadairs fire plan collapsed so we had to call for international help for more planes and chopers) Things were more dramatic especially in 2007/2009 as we lost planes and crew members dew to failures under extreme situations where canadairs were the only primary defense against crowning fast moving wildfires. Canadiar greek pilots are the best in europe probably the world and are HEROES
STU
That like in Expendables:)
Did anybody else hear the Dukes of Hazard horn?
I heard it to
+*TJ* Loves longboarding trthfzxcwrqop
Yup
this could be useful in sweden right now
They wont buy them... carbon users.
So far 70 pyromaniacs give it a thumb down. What’s really interesting is that governements can afford 100 million dollar fighter arcraft but a 35 million waterbomber is just too exspensive?
+billy pilgrim
You mean Always
凄い!
Imagine being a fish
James Smith idk why but i laugh 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
sooked in
lmao
😂😂😂
imagine being human and accidentally abducted by an alien fire fighting flying saucer..
Or a scuba diver
