- This song was a long time coming. It sounds simple, but under the surface it gets a little complex.
I started writing part of this song in 2019 one evening at the piano. I wrote the opening chords and melody, but didn't know what do do after that. In 2020 I wrote more parts and recorded it, but didn't like the result. After occasionally revisiting the song over the next few years, I finally figured out how I wanted the music to be. I recorded it again, but didn't like the lyrics or the upbeat chorus.
Finally, while taking my dog on a walk in the winter rain, I came up with new lyrics and a new chorus (a much darker one). I recorded the song for a third time, and I am very pleased with how this song has grown over the past 5 years. I've also learned a lot about music production, so this sounds a lot cleaner than my previous songs. (although there is still a whole world of things to learn!)
For those interested in music theory, the song is mostly in 7/8 meter, with some changes to 4/4 and 7/4 in the prechorus and chorus. Rather than composing in these time signatures to show off, it was necessary for the song. I tried to make the whole song from 4/4 when I recorded it in 2020, but it sounded like there was some extra notes hanging on. I didn't realize until much later that the song in my head was in 7/8 (basically 4/4 with a missing 8th note). I've always liked music that is in an odd meter but is as smooth as 4/4. One more quirk is that the chorus and the song ends with a bII chord! It's very unusual, especially for such a gentle song, but again it seemed natural when I played it.
The rain sound was recorded with special microphones that go inside my ears, so it provides a 3D sound of me walking in the rain. I might make a video about doing that if anyone's interested.
As always, thanks for listening!

Very well done, sir.
❤️🖤💛
Hearing this at just about 2am and this really feels and sounds great. Oddly enough the video makes me reminisce about when I used to go on late night walks with a friend. Anywho, I'm glad this was in my recommended and good work.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and thanks for listening!
Daniel, this sounds absolutely huge. The production is dark and extremely dense and I love the lyrics. I am hoping this is part of an album, it’s excellent man.
Thanks! My goal right now is to make 1-2 songs a year, learn about recording/mixing/mastering/etc. along the way, and then hopefully there can be a cohesive album or at least LP at the end of it all. Thanks for listening!
