  • With Spider-Man Homecoming fresh on everyone's mind, I think we need some classic titles to get our comic book jives going, and this is the game to cut it. But which port? That's what we take a look at today in our newest edition of Port vs Port.
    A special thank you to Jake for kindly donating his copy for me to make a video out of. I cannot appreciate it enough man thank you!

    I just noticed something. The N64 version did have one little detail over Dreamcast and PS1; The N64 had full body shadows for spiderman while the other two used simplified circles for everything.

      I personally like going into what makes old games tick, so this video was honestly a treat for me, considering I never knew about the dreamcast port. While I agree, the N64 version is the worst way to play, the novelty of playing a CD intended game on a cartridge is still quite admirable. You would be surprised what lengths they had to go through to compress everything in.

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  Před 6 lety +12

      Well if this kinda vid is a treat for you, check out the other Port Vs Port and comparisons I have made. I love making these kind of videos as I myself am interested in seeing what they changed and what they didn't One should be up Friday for Fatal Frame so I hope you enjoy!
      Resident Evil 2 is the definition of compression, and that title is just a marvel at what they did. Would love to get a Port vs Port on that one, since there is absolutely so much to talk about with it

    For those who don't know, the PC port is exactly the same as the Dreamcast port. Just note that if you buy it, you also need to get some sort of software to lock the framerate to the right FPS, because on a modern PC, it runs way too fast and causes a lot of glitches that render the game unbeatable in certain levels (most notably in the Venom Chase level). In all honesty, the original PS1 version is my favorite. While the graphics aren't as good as PC and Dreamcast, I feel it plays a lot smoother than those versions, since it was made for that system.

    From my experience the N64 has better polygons and softer edges on the graphics, compared to the PS1, the only disappointing part of the N64 is that there are no cut scenes and the poor audio limitations of the cartridge.
    The Dreamcast version is by far the best.

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  Před 7 lety +21

      Idk man I found the N64 version to be very much washed out, with horrible textures and the like. It does have better framerate but at its cost to looking worse doesn't really help much. Combine that with the audio limitations and cutscenes, it pretty much is a poor port. You can have polygons up the wazoo, but if the textures are very much poor and flatlined, it wont mesh well with the entire game

    • @NewToCool74
      @NewToCool74 Před 7 lety +15

      stabinghobo is right, the ONLY thing the PS1 version has over it is cutscenes and music, the coming from a guy who owned both when they came out, and as hobo also said the N64 had a much better polygon count with its 3.D models so it did balance out just a bit, but over all I would choose the PS1 version, but the N64 version is not as bad as you made it sound in the video with the whole (avoid picking this version up), depending on whether the player values fast load times and a better polygon count people may prefer the N64 version.

      I grew up with the PC version, and I loved it to death. In recent years tho I've had to play it on Dreamcast because of all the issues the PC version has running on newer systems. I've had Spiderman die numerous times in cutscenes, resulting in a game over, him getting stuck after the scripted scene with venom in the building, making it impossible to catch up to him, I've even had Spiderman jump too far and fall off the building to his death in the very first cutscenes in the very first level.

      The PC port has too high of a frame rate, so in the in-game cutscenes where Spidey swings, he often doesn't swing and just falls to his death. The only way I could complete that port was by running a webcam at the same time in order to slow the PC down, and get a lower frame rate.

    Still find the N64 version more bearable to the eyes than the PS1 version. N64's washed out indeed, but that includes the pixels blending together better. Also thought they did a great job using the cutscene limitation to make them look more like comic panels. I don't see it as a bad port, but rather they what they could with the limitations and were creative with it as well.

    Nice summary, intresting to see the diffrences. But do they all control equally? Wondered if ones gameplay was worse then the other. Anyway if I may speak from my experience, this is my favorite Spider-Man game. It´s simple, the story and presentation is wonderful it come out at a good time when Venom was at his best, oh is this Venom my favorite one. From this I learned about a lot of stuff of Spiderman from the comics I never knew about since I did´t grow up with the comics, just the 90´s show. The music is awesome, I am spoiled and wish we could get the music from the cutscenes. They are so rock on awesome! I wish they whould use that type of music in the movies. I am tired of orchestra. I had the PC so the graphics for Dreamcast is just mmmmm delicious. I think the shados and details are really nice and looks better then future games.

    • @Ahturos
      @Ahturos Před 6 lety

      Oh I almost forgot. The glitches on the PC version, oh my god the glitches. Usually if my computer played normally I had and automatic death on the Police chase level when Spiderman falls down and is suppose to websling to the building, sadly he dose´t do that and the game takes it as if you die. Frustrating since I planed to playtrought without any deaths. This was back when I was 12. Same thing happens on the Chase Venom stage after the cut scene when they go trough and wreak havoc in that building. Spiderman just runs out, dose´t swing and dies. One way to skip is was that I made the computer laggy, don´t ask me how I did it. So the game plays super slow but during the cutscenes, it get´s corrected and Spidey dose´t die. And I can play the rest of the game normally.

      not a huge difference, both versions run at 640x480i (with support for 480p VGA on DC and Component on GameCube) and run at 60 FPS with little slowdowns with many explosions at the same time. Also the GameCube port features 1000 polygons more for the characters and Chao Battles but the Dreamcast has the edge when it comes to image clarity and textures.

Also, in a walkthrough I noticed the audio was bad for the Dreamcast version. In the sewer level before the train, the music would cut off in the middle of the track and loop abruptly. You said “the ones with Tobey Maguire” like that’s a bad thing lmao. Those are the best Spider-Man films.

    in the dreamcast version the hands are weird, but if you have the ben reilly skin it makes more sence because of the bulky web shooters....

    I've had the Dreamcast version since the very beginning, I loved playing that game with my father back in the days. We're not native English speakers, so as a kid I kept asking him to translate every cutscene for me

    Dude I love your beard, how do you grow/shave it? I'm seriously sorry if that's a rediculous question but I'd love to grow a beard exactly like yours in this video. Good one by the way, I own the N64 and PS1 version, haven't found the Dreamcast version yet.

      Ernest Ross Wyatt Bwahaha don't even trip brotha you good! Usually wat I do I let it fully grow out, takes about 2 weeks, I then get a regular razor then start cutting the lines. Try to make sure it matches and boom, comes out like that. It's similar than you think really 😊

    Can't output like the ps1? The limitation on the n64 is the cartridge memory it has a more powerful cpu and graphics processor

    I had the PS1 Demo Disc where you could play this game up until shortly after the Venom mission.

      Nani?1 There was a demo? I actually didn't know that. Where it come from by chance?

      Came in one of those multi demo discs that Sony would create to get people interested in other games. I don't remember where I got it. It either came with another game, came with the system itself, or my brother got it from a magazine or something. Only thing I know is several demos were on one disc.

    I grew up on the PS1 Version for Spider-Man 1 & 2. Thank god! I still want to try the Dreamcast version eventually, because it looks really good!

    PlayStation for me. Dreamcast obviously looks better but I prefer the PlayStation controller + this was part of my childhood so I'm biased and unashamed of it, haha.

    Dreamcast and PS1 both win, N64 version loses.
