In this video, Dr Sanjay Gupta, consultant cardiologist discusses causes of a slow heart beat and what it means for the patient. My website is www.yorkcardiology.co.uk
Thank you Dr Gupta. Was just wean fed off Metoprolol 100mg. From 100 to 50 to 25 to 12.5. Heart rate was 42 to 47 in all dosages (asymptomatic). Now without any metoprolol , heart rate is generally 52-56. No symptoms. I’m an active 73 year old female. Thank you for this video. Has set my mind at ease.
Hello Dr. Gupta, I have recently had a heart attack & a stent placed. It has been helpful to me to listen to your cardiology comments. York Cardiology is lucky to have you on staff. I'm envious of the people who can have an appointment with you, they are lucky as well to have access to such a knowledgeable and competent doctor. Keep up the good work and useful videos.
Wonderful! Thank you Doctor being a highly qualified Cardiologist explaining so comprehensivly to laymen so that he could understand Medical Terminology in a simple language encouraging not to worry about illness.
Thank you for caring enough to explain, how a great cause for concern for many people, Isn’t as frightening as it appears in ones mind, Fear is often caused by ignorance, but your ability to educate and calm in such a kind way is very welcoming.
Thank you...I have listened to a number of your videos and heard something helpful and useful in each one. Very much appreciate that you share your knowledge and experience in such down to earth language! LC
Dr Gupta, the manner and clarity with which you explain some of these pressing health issues truly amazing me. For the past couple of months I've been following your videos almost religiously..Keep up the GREAT work... You're Blessed 🙏👼
Thank you, I am anemic (on iron), and the slow heart rate, palpitations, dizziness has been giving me great anxiety, this video you made helped me calm down so much. I will get my heart checked as GP requested yes but with more calmness around the speed and - also really educational about the pacemaker wow that was stunning, I had the wrong idea about what it was for. Wish they would teach us this in high school. Gratitude for your good natured sharing, namaste
A low resting heart rate can actually mean that your are in great condition! My resting heart rate has always been in the mid-fifties. I've been told that as long as I'm asymptomatic not to worry about it. Early symptoms are things like dizziness, lightheartedness and even brief blackouts.
Thank you doctor this has taken away any anxieties I had ..7years ago I was told I needed an ablation for SVT but was really scared to go through with it until I saw your video on SVT and ablations that made my mind up and had it done that year now palpitation free ..you are an amazing doctor that cares enough to do these videos and help so many people ..thank you from my heart and me lol .
This has put me so much at ease. Right now my fiance is going through this. Her heart rate goes down to as low as 39. We are in the process of getting in touch with a cardiologist. Over the last 6 weeks she has gone through faint spells. She has been to the emergency room several times and each time she has been sent home with different information, low potassium, dehydration, some times with a shrug of the shoulders. Right now she is on a halter monitor. Watching your video, you have provided in the 15 minutes what none of these doctors have told us. I do respect that they are ER doctors and not trained in cardiology. They have hooked her up to monitors for several hours, the last doctor we meet a few nights ago, although I didn't like his bedside manner did give us a small piece of information. Yes she had a low heart rate, it went down to 39BPM. BUT, it never skipped a beat. I told him that what I have read says she MAY need a pace maker, he said 100% no. She does not need one. She is 46, but the strange thing is, I have even made her exercise. So like kettlebell swings, she got tired very quickly(after a few minutes), but her heart rate didn't go past 53BPM. Anyway, I am going to have her watch this video tomorrow to help put her at ease. Thank you.
Thank you for your educational videos. I was diagnosed with Heart Block 1 10 years ago. However, recently was referred back to Cardiology and seemed to be showing symptoms of HB2. I suffer from extreme fatigue and have fainted at work. Allahamdullah, I am now waiting for my MRI scan as that’s the only test outstanding. Listening to your knowledge is uplifting as we don’t always get the right communication from our doctors.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this truly vital information, I am a big fan of all your videos that are enlightening and extremely useful. It helps me a great deal In many ways and makes a big difference in order to understand my own situation better.
I am a 2nd year nursing student and also happen to have occasional SVT episodes I am enduring a rather stressful time of my life and caught my resting rate at 57bpm, it is usually about 62bpm. I immediately began to panic thinking maybe I have sick sinus syndrome (learned about this briefly in nursing school) but this video has taken away all my worries! I am the type of person to try to figure out the why, give me the pathophysiology and the physiology in order to comfort my anxiety and you've done that perfectly in this video! Thank you so much! I also cannot wait to implement these findings in my future nursing practice ☺
I'm a retired nurse, and I know it can be scary to have symptoms that point to illnesses we learn about. I hope your schooling goes well and you're happy in your career choice. It's the hardest job in the world, rewarding, but very tough in so many ways. Best thing is to take care of yourself as best as you can and find ways to relax and be stress free.
I am also a nurse and yes it is very terrifying. Especially when you know the cases and usually self diagnose. I too am having worst anxieties. Because my heart and pulse never go down to 60 and below, before until 3 yrs ago there are episodes it goes down even to 40s makes me panic. I consulted a cardio and he did not believe me that it goes down to that and given me carvedilol. I took only 1 dose amd stop..makes me scared to think my heart would just stop😩
Explained the topic that is not so well known or common in a lucid, easy to grasp style. Dos and Don'ts are stated,I.e. who needs or doesn't need treatment like youngsters is driven home. On.the whole a very educative talk worth hearing over and over again. Style of presentation is matchless.
Thank you Dr. Gupta. You always make my day and gimme hope. My heart rate when I was dizzy was 42. I panicked like you never heard. By the the way I am a cardiac patient. The blood pressure was 102/57. I nearly phoned an ambulance. I am on carloc 6.25mg and I began to worry if that was it. But within an hour it was back to 72 etc. But still dizzy but I could walk in the house up and down to make it better😏 that's what I told myself. I sometimes have these episodes but I am just dizzy and it becomes better with time. To be honest these days hospitals SCARE me. You NEVER speak to my doctor on the phone. I am grateful for you Dr. Gupta.
Well, thank you! Since my heart attack, stent and multiple medications, my heart rate has been consistently low - as in the 40's and 50's. It is worrying, but, I'm fit and healthy so my Cardiologist has told me, all is well. I've not really believed him, until I watched this video and you've EXPLAINED why it is well. So yes, thank you!
I'm 26 and heart anxiety is literally ruining my life right now. I've recently got myself a fitbit, due to feeling my pulse when i lay in my bed, and i regret it. I've never fainted and I dont feel dizzy. I was in martial arts for 10 years and i lifted weights and did cardio ocassionaly for 10 years aswell. My RHR is in the 50s, somstimes it drops to 48 at most but doesnt stay there for very long. Ever since i got this fitbit im starting to feel shortness of breath and I'm putting it on the heart rate. I had covid 3 months ago but I didnt have problem breathing back then also i checked my lung function after that and it was perfect. Anxiety is a killer. Its not the low heart beat its the anxiety that creates these stupid symtoms that appear all of sudden and fit perfectly into my own diagnosis of my heart. If anyone wants to talk feel free to comment ✌️
@@tanyawieczorek6603 Still alive, still having symptoms. I guess its long covid problems. But Im working out currently. Living life without anxiety. Didnt take any meds so far.

would it be of any concern if after a long stressful day, coming home and relaxing had brought my heart rate down to 45 bpm? I was awake and didn't notice, for some reason I checked my pulse in the car and freaked out. I had been truly relaxed for once (normally anxious) and my radial pulse was soft so it was hard to find. generally it is more easily paliptable so I was scared something out of the ordinary was happening. I am 28, 150 lbs and 71 inches. I have been terrified just because my heart rate doesnt normally dip that low but nor am I ever that relaxed. Thank you for these videos again!
I have graves' disease and i have a funnel chest, i am out of shape and not healthy at all, but my heartrate gets as low as 50 at night and sometimes i would take a measurement when i wake up in the middle of the night and get a reading of 40s. I don't feel dizziness when i am awake, but many time i get dizziness when i am half asleep, like if i am awake but don't get off bed immediately sometimes i would get a rush of dizziness for a second or shorter, if i straighten my head or sit straight up immediately the dizziness goes away.
Thanks so much for this enlightenment on this problem! It has caused a lot fear and anxiety for my sister on this , she developed this after getting covid . Her pulse reaches at times 44
Thanks for sharing all this info, doctors just don’t have time to explain all this, but you do, I am in western Canada and it is all very helpful. Thanks again
Great info, thanks! I have been getting some afibs, usually in the mornings. Where my heart beats fast and won't come out of it sometimes. I have been to the ER a couple times with this. Everything was fine after all tests. I have a good cardiologist, have done stress tests, nuclear scans, and every other test thats non internal with a cath. Everything checks out fine. I have PACs I was told. But I noticed all of this coming on when I started lacking in sleep. I was having nightmares and waking up catching my breath some times. Apnea type symptoms. I did an in home sleep study and am borderline with sleep apnea I was told. They said I had a few events and my heart rate dipped to 39 at one point. The night I did the test I actually had a better than average nights sleep. I am seeing a pulmanologist to see if I may have sleep apnea and possibly do more testing. I have been told sleep apnea can cause these symptoms I am in good shape at 53. But at night my heart rate sitting in a chair with my feet up can get to 49 bpm and lying down can sometimes get as low as 43. During the day its 58 beats per minute sitting or mid 70s standing. I do 30 mins of cardio 4 times a week. No issues and feel good. I don't experience dizziness or problems. Other than at night around 10 30 pm, when leaning back in a chair with my feet up I will get some heart flutters where my heart slows way down and flops around. My heart would say be beating at 60 bpm, than get in low 50s to sometimes high 40s. Sitting more up right or standing it doesn't do it. And when going to bed I will get flutters, sometimes for 30 mins. Standing up usually eleviates all symptoms. During these episodes, if my hearts beating normal, than sometimes when swallowing something when this is going on my heart will skip.. Not sure if its a vegus nerve thing. Than I get out of the flutters eventually and am good with a 50s heart rate. My blood pressure is usually 117 over 75 ish. Thanks Dr Gupta!!!!
Dear Dr. Gupta...thank you so much for your video....I feel good n reassured when I hear you n how to keep my heart well n healthy...you really are a Godsend..Bless you n your Family.,.much love from India .
Well doc, you really explained all I need to know about slow heart beat, I asked my doctor about it and all she said was we might put in a pacemaker, which cause my panic attacks go wild. Thank you for all the info.
Your blood pressure is on the higher side. You should see your doctor if it's constantly in that ballpark because that's a clear indication of hypertension.
I have been on a Beta Blocker for about a week and have been concerned about my low heart rate and low blood pressure. However I’m not too worried as I think the Beta Blocker does reduce anxiety . I am grateful for this reassurance until I see my cardiologist in 2 weeks.
Respected Doctor, Thanks for your wonderful video which I think would alleviate fear and instil confidence in numerous people and their relatives. Best regards.
I needed to hear this. My heart is beating in the low 50's. It almost feels like it does not beat consecutively. I am 58. I do walk 4 miles a day. I do struggle with high cholesterol. And I thought I had TIA. But either way, I was relaxed at your explanation of a slow Herat beat. Yes.... I did feel somewhat dizzy.. You are so kind!!!!!
I was told that it’s common to have a lower heart rate if you are healthy or very active but you should always ask your doctor to look at your overall clinical picture
Ever since I’ve been wearing a Garmin watch or Apple Watch for the last 2 years I’ve always had a lower heart rate with no symptoms that I can remember. Resting heart rate would average around 55bmp. When I sleep it goes to about 45-48. But since I had Covid in September 2021 I’ve been light headed and brain foggy. I’ve worn a heart monitor for 2 weeks and doctors seen no problems and said I had a healthy heart. But I still get anxiety about it. Your video has helped me calm my nerves a bit. Thank you.
@@marynibhrian6573 I am doing better but I am also dealing with low estrogen, adrenal fatigue and low progesterone. So that’s been something I’ve been trying to correct with natural supplements. How are you?
Very inspiring video lesson about slow heart beat, you give us hope to be healed., Thank you Doctor, may you continue to encourage people who are distress because of their illness. May God bless you!
You are awesome, Dr Gupta love your videos. Do you have an opinion on "incomplete right bundle branch block" in a 30 year old male who doesn't smoke or drink, does exercise regularly, no family history of heart problems?
I'm so glad i found this vlog.......i am obese but have always even years before obese had average heartbeat of about 55. I have hbp and was put on meds that made it be at faster and I could not handle it as it increased palpitations. I can exercise and rate increase but not increase palpitations. I'm glad to know it's just average for me.
@@rut8851 hey good to hear you lost 90lbs! I am also obese and in the process of losing weight. I am a bit concerned as my heart rate is 51 - 55 but I otherwise feel good other than having some Ectopic heart beats. I am just worried about how low it will go as I lose the weight and get fit.. I really don't want a pacemaker... I will see a Cardiologist in due time to express my concerns.
If I would ever knew this before because I had pacemaker implanted 5 years ego at age 55.The only reason was my 50 beats a minute.I wasn't tired,I had not reason whatsoever .I am not taking any pills,no history genetically I was in very good physical shape.Until this day at age 60 I cant understand why I have pacemaker
Around your age, I’m no cardiologist but as a trauma nurse, we’d wanna keep your heart working less at your age, especially during code blue, so as long as you don’t feel dizzy or feel like blacking out. You should be fine at that bpm. Some people wit anxiety have it as low as 30. Only a cardiologist can rule out any problems wit your heart. I constantly worry about my heart rate but eventually it all falls back to anxiety.
Dr Gupta that was a very good message. You are just like my cardiologist always trying to educate your patients. And if we learn to ear right and exercise correctly it would elimate alot of heart problems. I am working on this. It not easy but it can be done. I did it before and l know l cam do it again. You are a blessing that's the way l think of my cardiologist of l only knew you both years ago.
Hi Dr., I had 3 open heart surgeries for a heart valve replacement. I had my 3rd open heart Feb2021 at Cedar Sinai Hospital, LA. I am little worry, I decided to fly back to Cedar Sinai Hospital in Jan2022 plus I had loss 50 pounds since my return. I useless don't play around with the heart if I know something is wrong. Here at home we do not perform open heart surgeries and healthcare is very limited when it comes to the heart. Thanks!

Thank you very much Doctor. It was very informative and helpful.
Thanks for sharing all this info, doctors just don’t have time to explain all this, but you do, I am in western Canada and it is all very helpful.
Thanks again
Thank you:-)
very good video thank you
Thank you !!! that was very helpful.
Most encouraging explanation from the rest of the cardiologists I've heard. It eliminates my fear.
Dear Dr. Gupta...thank you so much for your video....I feel good n reassured when I hear you n how to keep my heart well n healthy...you really are a Godsend..Bless you n your Family.,.much love from India
.
super helpful. many thanks...
Well doc, you really explained all I need to know about slow heart beat, I asked my doctor about it and all she said was we might put in a pacemaker, which cause my panic attacks go wild. Thank you for all the info.
Really Great video. My heart rate is 40-44 bpm and my bp is 160/95. I'm not worried because the amount of blood flow isn't super high or low.
160/95 is what you should worry about, I guess. It's too high!
Very useful. Thanks doctor.
Respected Doctor, Thanks for your wonderful video which I think would alleviate fear and instil confidence in numerous people and their relatives. Best regards.
thank you so much !

Hi Dr my heart rate is 52-58 before covid I was teaching 6 aerobics classes a week. It freaks me out that it's low but you reassuring. Thank you
I was told that it’s common to have a lower heart rate if you are healthy or very active but you should always ask your doctor to look at your overall clinical picture
@@Portia620the thing is most of are unhealthy I myself get zero cardio yet heart rate at 50
You are simply amazing Dr.
Thank you.
I have this too after covid, 5 months in, lightheadedness and pounding heart at night and recent bradycardia. How are you now?
@@marynibhrian6573 I am doing better but I am also dealing with low estrogen, adrenal fatigue and low progesterone. So that’s been something I’ve been trying to correct with natural supplements. How are you?
I also have bradycardia after covid, but a few months ago started having tachycardia also. Are you still suffering from both?
Great explanation!
Very inspiring video lesson about slow heart beat, you give us hope to be healed., Thank you Doctor, may you continue to encourage people who are distress because of their illness. May God bless you!
Thank you so much you always make me feel so much better:)
You are awesome, Dr Gupta love your videos. Do you have an opinion on "incomplete right bundle branch block" in a 30 year old male who doesn't smoke or drink, does exercise regularly, no family history of heart problems?
you are amazing thank you for this
Very informative,thank u doc
I'm so glad i found this vlog.......i am obese but have always even years before obese had average heartbeat of about 55. I have hbp and was put on meds that made it be at faster and I could not handle it as it increased palpitations. I can exercise and rate increase but not increase palpitations. I'm glad to know it's just average for me.
Are you good now? And do you have anxiety?
@@404mxri Yes, I am. I lost about 90 lbs and still heart rate is around 55 average. I don't have anxiety about it anymore since it is normal.
Very good information Dr!! 👍
Tks Dr very reassuring and comforting words in yr relaxed tutorial
Good info doc. Thanks.
If I would ever knew this before because I had pacemaker implanted 5 years ego at age 55.The only reason was my 50 beats a minute.I wasn't tired,I had not reason whatsoever .I am not taking any pills,no history genetically
I was in very good physical shape.Until this day at age 60 I cant understand why I have pacemaker
@@Vrveonline wait anxiety can do this?? Please message back
Great info. I am watching from Trinidad and Tobago.
Thanks so much . God bless you
I’m so grateful to God for you existence , your an Angel 😇 thank you 🙏
you are a good dr great info thanks
Thank you sir, great clarity ❤
Great video! Thank you for sharing. My hr drops as low as 40-45 while sleeping and it's always concerned me.
Same here, I get in the 40s pretty often.
Hello dr. Gupta. Your video is very helpful.
Thank you Doc.
Hi Dr., I had 3 open heart surgeries for a heart valve replacement. I had my 3rd open heart Feb2021 at Cedar Sinai Hospital, LA.
I live 14 hr flight away from CA, and just got out of the hospital here at home, and my heart rate was 49 to 55 during my admission. I also, had 2 stents and 3 strokes as well, at age 35, now 48.
Thanks!
Excellent 👍 forum. Ty Doctor.
My norms is in the 60's and is now in the 50's and has dropped to 49. Tired all the time with hardly no energy and cloudy mind and even notice I don't communicate as well. My thyroid is fine. Waiting to see cardiologist
Tim Russell mines 58 and I feel tired all the time as well I’m 18 heavy nicotine vaper last 2 Years. Think that has a big thing to do with it. This is my wake up call to see the doctors and get my shit right makes so much sense now
B10 Matt how are you going now mate?
My resting heart rate is 40 per minutes getting no any other problem but I suffer from anxiety issues with the of course ectopic. Fellas If you have a ectopic and structurally normal heart don’t worry. You will get tones of ectopic but there is no harm for your heart , during ectopic you may can’t catch your breath that’s normal.
Wow mine is above 90. I wish I had a rate like yours. I sweat too much.
Bunny finally I found out my ectopic cause after 5 years of strangling, it was my stomach exxeces bloating and gas, that shit improved after I stop smoking drinking and taking care of my eating habits can you fucking believe it was fucking gas makes me die !
Can Iynemli that’s crazy. Good that you found your way.
@@ddrci88 I believe you Buddy, same thing happened to me. Mine was caused by Gerd and acid reflux, they stopped 2 days after I started take omeprazole. I stopped omeprazole and I still don't get them anymore.
Good information sir
Thank you Dr Sab.my age is 67 and my heart beat is 57 .I was somewhat worry but there is no sign you mentioned.so after listening you now I am satisfied and not to worry
Thank you 🙏
Hi Sanjay. I must say i really enjoy your videos. I truly believe your approach to informing people and the treatment thereof is absolutely the correct way of practicing medcine. I have a slow heart rate of 32, have been diagnosed with full av block type 3. Although experience no symptoms whatsoever. I have had this condition for the past 5 years starting in 2018. I have been told by a conduction specialist that i need a pacemaker. I am really confused as i have never blacked out nor felt dissy and have energy levels better than most people. Please help me to understand what to do
This is amazing. Thank you. I've had this issue quite a bit a year or so ago but they couldn't really find anything with the tests they did. I had recovered from sepsis and I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it. I haven't had very many issues lately. Sometimes dizziness upon waking but it is rare. Thank you for this!
are you anemic?
can i contact with you.
i really need your advice.
Dry helpful thank you 🙏
great video
What about a drop in Diastolic BP into the 50's (normal in 70's-80's) directly after standing up from sitiing, and/or during respiratory inflammation?
