This is the version I grew up on (the best version). The flow of Common & Saukrates with the laid back but steady beat goes so well together. God I miss Hip Hop in the 90's. I remember staying up on Sunday nights recording my tape cassettes to the 88.5 Rhythm & Vibe Clark Atlanta University radio station during there underground Hip Hop playlist from about 11PM-2AM.
Them college stations man. I first heard this on the University of Maryland station, but I used to go back in forth between them and Morgan State for that heat. So many underground bangers.
This is the original version produced by Saukrates himself from the Brick House EP, put out in 1997. A dope No I.D. remix (which is on CZcams, and I'm today years old first hearing, lol) was on the B-side. Then there's the 99 Remix, again produced by Saukrates. Only Jazzy Jeff tie at all was this original version here going on his Hip-Hop Forever III mix record, along with hit pre-released tunes by other acts.
Absolute classic! Grew up Southside Chicago with Common as my favorite emcee but I didn't hear this until I went away to college. My friend from NYC put me on. The track was so strong I couldn't admit to my buddy that I never heard it before... Didn't want to give him the ego boost of being a better "head" when it came to my favorite artist.
Over the last decade I've probably listened to this song over 5000 times and I still have no fuckin clue what common is saying in the entire second verse
I know Jazzy Jeff is mostly known as The Fresh Prince (Wil Smith) side kick, but this guy's beats are just as great as Jay Dilla, DJ Quik, 9th Wonder, Khrysis, Dela, Apollo Brown, DJ Premier, Nicolay, or Madlib.

@@musakposowa yeah 1990s-1996 was my middle school & high school years, so I grew up on underground Hip-Hop music.

Saukrates sounds very much like Jeru the Damaja!
Yeah... He does... I never noticed that before... In a good way though... As his own man... My best friend sounded like Ghost in a very unique way.
