Lol cardboard box. That’s basically a condo or townhouse in the GTA. Glad I left and got my own house 1 hour away when I did. Been back a few times to the GTA recently for errands - and I am so over “missing” my old home - a few hours stuck in gta traffic with gta drivers reminded me how peaceful it is out where I live.
If you can work from home, leave the GTA. If you’re fast enough you can still get something for sub 500k (Like me) - I scored a 3 bedroom renovated bungalow with finished basement on a 1/2 acre fully fenced lot, wood deck, pool deck with swimming pool, firepit (and this region has very relaxed fire pit rules), shed, playground, detached 1.5 car finished garage, 30 foot driveway, municipal water, ridiculously cheap property tax, low home and auto insurance. My mortgage is so low I don’t even pay attention to the automatic withdrawals 😂.
Not gonna say where I got the house, but if you’re curious and serious about getting a house - think out of the box (no pun intended). When it comes to moving out of the GTA, seems Tamils (and I am one, so chill) can only think of Barrie. You have so many more options - look out West and East 1 hour. There are up and coming towns where you can find a house at an affordable price. Also, stay away from Tamil realtors - I’ve dealt with 2 - first one valued my moms old home super low - the other one was a family friend and he still tried screwing me and my young family into a couped up townhouse - which he was trying to sell for another client. Eff that. I needed a garage and a big back yard for my kid to run around and play in - got it when my wife tracked down a place online and we switched over to an old colleague turned agent who managed to seal the deal in record time. We won the house within a week of me going out and seeing it for the first time - inspection and everything.
