Here's two head cannons about the corruption. Feel free to take your pick.
1. The reason people as strong as Steven and Finn are unable to fight back the corruption is because (Maybe similarly to The Infection from Hollow Knight) the corruption "offers" something to its prey. Like maybe it offered Steven a universe where there really is peace, or maybe something else, and of course it isn't the same for everybody. But it is scary. Can you really face the one thing you desire most?
2. When a person is fully corrupted, they see themselves and other corrupted people as non corrupted, and they see normal people as corrupted, which is why some of the characters might be fighting their families, friends and bystanders other then just being mindless puppets to the corruption itself. (Which I don't like that kind of things, cause it seems just a tiny bit lazy and not as sad or justifiable enough for the characters who do fall victim to the corruption or what have you.)
There you go. They might both be true, one of them might be, neither of them might be, but I will hang onto them until proven to the contrary. Feel free to reply your own head cannons, promise you'll get no judgment from me. Have a nice rest of your day/night. 😊💜
Edit: Just got an idea for a 3rd one!
3. Now this is probably one of the most weirder ones, and may contradict number 2 but I think that whatever Corrupted characters are showing up, are just clones, we'll call them Shadows, (Original I know. -_-) and the real body's are kept... Somewhere, maybe the heart of the Corruption itself, as in the goop, or some place that is creating the Corruption. And people can try to break free from the Dark Heart, (which is where all the characters are all being kept) like Boyfriend, which is why the Boyfriend you face during Blueballed is less saturated, it's an imperfect copy because the original got away. And why Steven breaks his neck during his right animation, and maybe also why he has colored notes along with the Corrupted notes, OG Steven is trying to break free, but he is reminded of the Corruption's offer and eventually falls back into unconscious compliance.
Now I really like this new one and I think it could add a lot of depth to what this Corruption does to people, aside from just making them mindless slaves, which I think is just the lazy way of explaining these kind of forces. Anyway, remember you are loved, to stay hydrated and have a lovely day/night 😊💜
Head cannon 3 might make sense going along with the fact that boyfriend is okay with shooting the corrupted characters which were his friends.
