    101 shot- the forgetful shot, leaving the camera lens cap on. Well done list. I didn't think you could do 100 in 10 minutes

    Fantastic as always! I screamed twice: "Jaws!", and bang, there was the shot. Love that you didn't do any boring explanation, but let the shots speak for themselves.

    What a great video, made for bookmarking and sharing!
    About 3:18, I find it interesting that a binoculars shot always uses two circles, even though the experience of looking through binoculars (at least every pair I have used) shows the image in a single circle. I think that's one of those 'wrong' things that you need in storytelling to prevent confusion (people thinking that's a telescope or similar)

    Nice list. 👍

    Thanks for doing this. I've often thought about need for cinematic language to be defined in one place like in an ongoing encyclopedia. This was better than expected.

    I honestly refer to most of these shots by whatever movie I saw them in.
    But the tilt/pan whips and hidden wipes are my go to when doing weddings. They make for easier cutting and transitions and I'm my opinion add that "party" effect.

  • @WillN2Go1
    @WillN2Go1 Před 2 lety

    This is a masterpiece! I would challenge anyone to find as comprehensive a list as this anytime before 2000. I'm sure it was attempted, but there would always be obvious missing elements. I'm in my 60s so I'm part of that older dumber period (it might've been all that lead in the gasoline - I think I'm clearer thinking now in my dotage than I ever was.) This breaking down all the possible elements so we have a clear understanding of the available tools could be limiting - but of course it doesn't have to be. If you know what most movie makers have done to convey say: fear - then you can expand on that, do something different. Maybe while shooting something completely different something was included that 'looked like fear' - but only by accident - that's the other way to learn from mistakes. (I once did a set-up wrong to fool someone, and wound up learning something positive and useful about lighting.)
    Barbara Tuchman at the beginning of A Distant Mirror wrote about a late Roman rural landowner who wrote perfect Latin poetry. A style that had been developing for centuries was finally so perfected, even some guy in the sticks could do it... and then the Roman Empire eventually ended in the west. Her point was that it is in the transitions, the periods of turmoil where change not only happens but is possible. Her book was about the 14th Century in northern France.
    How about looking into shots that are just plain wrong. Like Runaway Bride, when Julia Roberts was standing on that balcony - everything gone wrong... and Bill Butler dollies in on her. Huh??

    Thanks, Sareesh. You do the hard work it takes to be an exceptional teacher. Most appreciated. An idea for a video? As a stills photographer, mostly B&W, for 54 years, I am in awe of the beautiful methods of the early film and TV industry, up to and beyond, for example, the Perry Mason TV series. The indoor shots are impeccable - worthy of Ansel Adams for their lighting and tonal range - firm blacks, accurate whites, and in between. How do we do that in digital? How do those methods translate to today's HDR cameras for color?
