Unfortunately many Yellow Perch fisheries become stunted due to the reproductive capabilities of Yellow Perch. However, some perch fisheries due to harvest or predation pressure are kept at lower densities allowing perch to grow 12" or more. These jumbo perch are excellent eating. In this video I was fortunate enough to stumble on a school of jumbos including a new personal best.

Tjats a nice fish fry. No ice here sadly but come March a trip to the Cape kettle ponds for perch.
Interesting that you say the smaller perch have a more aggressive bite and the big ones are more picky. Our perch are the exact opposite. We always say "kids play with their food, adults don't." And we see it on the cameras, little ones just toying with the bait and the big girls just come in like a rocket and slam it.
Have never caught a yellow perch. So far only brown and rainbow trout through the ice.

A day you will never forget! Im a perch geek too. And you were geeking! I've always wanted to mount one.(table mount). And felt if I got one that was over 14" and had a big belly. What is the biggest Wa state perch you have seen? I've Only herd storys of a 16" perch in this state.
I’ve seen many perch over 14” but none over 15”. I know several who claim to have caught bigger but never seem to be able to produce any evidence
Cascade in Idaho has some monsters.
Those are some awfully big perch for a WA state lake. Something is going right. Hopefully some of the other lakes like Potholes Res and Soda Lake return to the days of big perch and buckets full of them. I'd like to see more of this happening around the state. I mean Yellow Perch is one of the most delicious freshwater fish and they multiply quickly and in plenitude. Why should we not have an abundance of them to be had by the fishing public? We have plenty of suitable lakes, they just need to be properly managed.

A few reasons bite windows can be narrower on the ice so want to take advantage. Additionally, I've noted that blood doesn't pool in perch meat as much.
