How to Calculate Confidence Intervals

  • This video describes how to calculate a 95% confidence interval for the population mean.
    Remember that we don't know the population mean, so we start with the best guess - the sample mean, and we build around that with a +/- margin of error.
    In this example, we don't know the population standard deviation, so we would normally use a t score. However, because the sample size is so high, the Central Limit Theorem kicks in and it's appropriate to use a z-value alongside the standard error.
    Note: It's helpful to memorize z = 1.96 for a 95% confidence interval as that's the most common interval used.
