- Pour yourself a caipirinha and grab your thumb picks because the awesome César Garabini is taking us on a trip to Rio for an introduction to the beautiful and grooving sounds of Choro guitar. Choro is a uniquely Brazilian form of jazz which developed over the same time period as Ragtime and Dixieland in the States. Its driving force is the seven-string nylon guitar, whose expanded range makes possible an almost pianistic playing style incorporating bass, harmony, and lead voices in a single performance. For complete transcriptions of everything César plays including the awesome duet with Olli Soikkeli, check out the full interview at Cracking the Code: troygrady.com/cesar/

Watching Cracking the Code I never thought I'd see traditional music from my home country featured in this channel. Sweet.
If Danilo Brito lived in the States he'd be on here already! You guys know how to pick for sure.
@@troygrady I'll trade him for Vito Bratta if you're willing.
@@luisownerbr Not exactly sure what you mean by that, but both guys are awesome players.
@@troygrady You know that scene from Kill Bill when Hattori Hanzo tells Beatrix he's japanese and likes baseball and she's american and likes japanese swords? Well, I can play a little bit of samba, but I daydream all the time about the 80s hair metal scene (that's why I watched Cracking the Code like 50 times). Anyway, I'm proud to see Cesar shredding that old 7 string here on your channel, I've been a fan for quite some time and even got some of the private videos. I hope Cracking the Code 2 becomes a thing!

I'm so glad to see some real and good brazilian music, being played magnificently.
Brazilians know their picks and strings!
Brazilian music is the best.
Muito massa ver os BRs sendo referentes em música!!! Parabéns
And there woman, seriously so much great music the choro is huge so many great composers
Troy, look for Yamandu Costa. He is a brazilian guitarist who plays Chorinho
The best
underrated comment here! yamandu is a monster, but not exactly for picking technic... Troy, look for MOZART MELLO! and thank u for the great vids and lessons!
Yamandu is great. Marcello Goncalves is right up there too
WOW
Choro is fantatisc
Always told people who likes brazilian music to listen to choro because of how awasome it is
That 7 string classical sounds so dark and beautiful. I want it!
awesome with the insight in brazilian guitar culture, I just bought my first 7 string classical guitar
I'm so happy to see some brazilian music here.
If someone is interested in learning brazilian classical guitar I'd highly highly recommend checking out Heitor Villa-lobos guitar pieces, specially the Choro n°1 and his 5 preludes
Villa-lobos is great. His etudes also are great. All his work is.
is Roland Dyens also Brazilian? he's good.
@@mrbtapir I have never heard of him, gonna check his music.
Btw, he's french
É nóis 👍🇧🇷
That actually how I got here! I learned those in college and finally got around to finding out where Villa-Lobos got his inspiration from.
Fascinating. I think I just found a new style to fall into for a lifetime or two. Listening not playing, that ain't happening for me.
Beautiful and wonderful!
Loved It, my favourite genre
Awesome video/music. Thank you so much for this, Troy. Obrigado!
Exceptional, very enjoyable.
I love how he plays.
Glad to see chorinho here, i follow this channel for a long time and i'l never imagine to see our best muscial style featured here, this is a national treasure, profound music
Brasil!!!!!! 🇧🇷 É nóis na fita!😁
Killing!!! 🔥
😮 Wow! 👏👏👏
this guy is amazing i love his right hand technique
Beautiful guitar music.
Thanks from New Zealand
Vcs merecem minha inscrição.
Muito bom parabéns aos dois artistas
Amazing playing technique!
I've been listening to A Felicidade at least once a fortnight all this year.
Such a beautiful rendition. Love Jobim, love choro/chorinho/bossa nova.
The changes alone make me want to cry, and when you start playing the melody, you just have to sing along, right? :/
He's back nice video troy
Fantastic. How good. I miss the words. Wow
No way it's Olli! I just happened to watch a reel he made on Instagram, minutes later I coincidentally found myself watching this video.
Awesome guitar playing. Nice music. I think most guitar players have a favorite genre but I for one like to hear and attempt to play other genres. I think it can make you a better guitarist. At least being knowledgeable of others and techniques. I mean I just simply love guitar. If it’s got a body and a few strings I just want to try picking and plucking that sucker to make music to express my inner self. OK it may sound terrible (my guitar playing) but give me time. Ha. Nice production Troy with this session. Can’t wait to get my hands on my very own ‘THE MAGNET’ camera mount so I can record and capture my (pathetic- ha) guitar fingering and picking. What a great way to analyze guitar playing and focus on weaknesses for improvement.
Cheers!
Ô beleza!
Troy hope you see this, can you do video about Jeff hanneman picking, good example is "Slayer-Necrophobic Cleveland Ohio '87 live footage " in that video you see Jeff picking soo fast idk how he do it :D I really enjoyed when Brendon Small was your guest, your channel is amazing
Hey Troy. I watched an interview with Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge), by Sweetwater, where they finish it talking about you. Just thought you should know and it's really awesome to see how my guitar idols know about you on Instagram.
Keep on rocking man.
Wow
Troy bring cesario filho from brazil also
His picking is insane !!
You should do an introduction to the requinto used by trios like los tres Reyes or los panchos
We'll take a look!
❤
I love using a thumb pick just because I will never drop it but trying to speed pick with it is a drag. This has inspired me to keep at it and work on finger picking.
Tommy Emmnanuel is a great switch hitter. When he needs to do alternate picking, he just grips it like a flat pick even while it's still attached.
@@troygrady I didn't think that was possible as I could pretty pick well with a jazz III but not the thumb pick. Thanks for the great tip! czcams.com/video/xJCVuTgTRU0/video.html
I myself cannot get used to a thumb pick. I’d rather use a nail.
Excellent! Sounds like a close relative to Django's gypsy jazz stylings.
Olli Soikkeli, who plays in the duet in the intro, is a super Gypsy jazz player so you're not far off.
Hello troy, I am a Brazilian classical musician and I would like to leave a suggestion ... It would be incredible to analyze such the right hand of new classical guitarists that has created technical tendencies, names like Matt Palmer and Ali Arango, maybe also addressing names like Narciso Yepes and Kazuhito Yamashita who revolutionized the classical guitar technique :)
It would be awesome if you did a video on Jimmy Herring's right hand technique
Would you possibly do some analysis of flamenco guitar players in the future?
Such an amazing video, just love the jam with Olli and the impressive demonstration of 7 string technique! Can you share what pickup system is installed in your 7 string? Thanks!
Has anyone purchased the full interview at cracking the code?
Who expected WONDERWALL in a Choro video hahahh? BTW not related to choro either but I just heard a guy named ROY MARCHBANK and he makes the guitar sound like black MIDI. It's surreal.
Hmmm very interesting! A lot of slowed down practice for me
One thing strucks me : the choro gentleman seems to have 'strange' fingers but you don't say a word ! For me he wears finger picks (or stuck nails rather)
Pleaseeee do John Browne of Monuments
Oh no, you summoned the "br br huehuehue" crowd. Prepare yourself.
hehe I guess u're gonna get only the ones that speak english tho
you're goddamn right
huehue br gang
Você está cutucando a onça com vara curta. Entendedores entenderão. huehueuhue
This is not HUEBR territory. This is masterclass superfine stuff. ;)
Choro, samba, bossa nova, jovem guarda (our kinda british look alike rock bands) and some great rock bands. Brazilian music used to be good.
Hi guys! Nice smartphone mounts! Are they available for sale anywhere?
Cheers!
Troy it would be awesome if you could check out FingerShred on youtube. I would love for you to interview that guy.
Finger picking like him basically makes alternate/economy picking irrelevant
Two words: Yamandu Costa.
Glad someone realized this. Yamandu is the king of everything now. Nobody compares to him. He’s the modern day Paco
Hendrix, who?
This music is as old as you can remember, and still the best technique around.
This is so much more musical than ANY heavy riffing.
I will listen to this all day.
When can we see an episode with Bireli Legrene!?
Please do one with his technique!!! 🐰❤️🎸🎶🤝✌️
Archspire is very heavy and very musical!
Nu-uh my music is way more musical than yours
Chris C Sevendust is my favorite heavy band. I’m not saying there aren’t any melodic and musical metal bands, this just hits me in the feels, in a “better” way. lol
Abschiss I believe you.
@@JackTheRabbitMusic that's fair, and totally makes sense
Checkout the picking technique of a guy named Edu Ardanuy, it's incredible.
That's true! Weird pick holding and all
You have to make a video about chris poland...frank gambale's evil twin !
What's that pink thing on the guitar?
First!
You shouldnt like your own comment tho... its like voter fraud.
Instead of the magnet 🧲 camera have you considered a player POV camera?
It would be from the players point of view. So basically, what you would see if you looked down at your picking hand while playing. Maybe mounted on the guitar body?
Thanks for sharing. Brazilian guitar is the ultimate shred guitar on nylon. Yamandu would put Yngwie to shame. My only criticism is that 95% of Brazilian players use nails, and not a thumb pick. Nails sound way better, and you can do more flamenco type rasgueos which Brazilians do.
Sounds like mario sunshine music on steroids , pretty sick to be honest
I was shure that choro could be played properly just by brasiian musicians. I'm glad I was wrong.
César is Brazilian, but true, Olli is from Finland. He's an awesome Gypsy jazz player as well.
@@troygrady sorry. I haven't listen to the story. Great playing anyway👍
What happened to this product? WP just results in an error.
O Choro é criação Carioca, não brasileira.
O Brasil não tem o direito de chamar o Chorinho de seu.
I'm gonna sell my guitars
xD
*OBAMA PLEASE STOP THE CAR I DON'T I DON'T WANT TO GO TO BRAZIL*
Nice! Now.......how about some TOP Flamenco players? Technically, the best players in the world. Jaw dropping! C'mon Troy!
Brazilian players incorporate a lot of flamenco techniques. Check out Yamandu Costa. He’s the modern day Paco, but Brazilian.
Yup! Yamandu is next level. I believe Paco was a fan. I'm a fan. Who wouldn't be?
It sounds like klinka klinka klinka over over and over again 🤷♂️
ÚNICO estilo musical decente já feito aqui.
E o bossa nova e baião (e seus variantes)?
Vira-lata.
Vira-lata (2)
These guys are monsters, this is ridiculous!
Olli and Cesar are the best!
