I still cry EVERY time I see those booster landing side by side. Greateast achievement in my 24 years thus far
I've got to tell you, I come back to this video periodically for the moment around 4:38 when he says "They actually landed the rockets back!". It's exactly the kind of wonder and amazement space enthusiasts felt during the first successful Falcon landing. And it's such a niche that there are so few genuine reactions from people that didn't know. I love it so much. Even 4 years later you make me smile and remind me how I felt seeing rockets land as well.
At the moment they're testing an even bigger rocket called Starship, when they have a successful flight of that I hope you do some sort of reaction to it too. (It'll be in the news in sure when it's successful).
They are actually able to land them on a regular basis now, even on drone ships.

Man as someone wanting to go into aerospace engineering I always forget that people don’t know that spacex lands all of there orbital class boosters and have started to catch the fairings. It is amazing and can’t wait for the next falcon heavy launch or starship and super heavy. And yes they do relaunch them too

It's easy to do with the speed of SpaceX's innovation. Just 15 years ago, very smart people, including NASA engineers believed it was physically impossible to return a booster. Now they do it on a regular basis, even landing onto drone ships. They're doing incredible things in a very short time scale.
At this point, when they land the rockets they probably aren’t even excited cause they have done it so many times. Btw I also want to be in the aerospace engineering industry as well!
Me and my older brother watch with huge surprise, never have we seen any rocket land like that, we were beyond speechless.

that car has really been shot in a solar orbit which will bring it through the orbit of mars.
almost every Falcon 9 lands back either on land or on a drone ship at sea.
the falcon heavy is just three falcon 9s strapped together with the two boosters having flown before and the core crashed only feet from the droneship in the sea.
but it is still an amazing feat.

btw they wanted to land the two boosters and the main on an swimming island in the ocean too, but the main landing failed, in later flights that also worked nice so all 3 parts are landing

i dont know if it was pointed out, but those 2 boosters were on their 2nd flight. i think (i could be wrong) but that was the first time orbital class rockets had been reused.

They have used some boosters up to 5 times. They are quite durable

Fun fact. SpaceX is the first private company to land rocket boosters back on Earth. They are also re-usuable which is a huge thing because space flight can be done cheaper now. Which means in a near future humans can purchase a ticket and fly to space to visit the moon or go to Mars

Elon and his team are doing some pretty crazy things, they regularly launch stuff to the space station for Nasa and land their boosters and re-use them, his main goal is affordable space travel/exploration and re-using the boosters is something he'd like to get down to you know landing it then a week later using it again I forget the numbers but he cut the cost of a launch by more than half or something.

Imagine an advanced exotic extraterrestrial species just discovering a Tesla with a dummy inside it just floating around in the void of space. The only indication on its origin being the licence plate "made on earth by humans" and they show up and decide to pillage and kill us all for our resources or whatever. All because Elon wanted to leave a mark on the universe lmao
Both of the boosters on this test flight were actually reused boosters that had flown previous missions. This year one booster landed for the 3rd time.
Also this year, they launched another Falcon Heavy and managed to land all three boosters (two back at base, and one on a massive drone ship out at sea).
People like to give Elon shit because of his weird publicity stunts, but SpaceX has already lowered the cost of orbital launches so much it is crazy.
The next big milestone is the launch of the Starship, a massive rocket where both stages (lower and upper) are fully recoverable and reflyable, that is bigger than the Saturn rockets and capable of taking 100 people in to orbit (and capable of refueling in orbit and capable of landing on other planets in a reusable format).
I am glad you guys enjoyed this video and got something out of it. I was worried it would be a bit too niche.
The channel that made this video (Spacefaring Future) makes many great space related videos, well worth a sub for anyone interested in space exploration.
Something else worth mentioning, because you commented on it, the boosters look more burnt up than they actually are. To reduce damage to the boosters as they re-enter the atmosphere, the bottom of the boosters are painted in an ablative paint that is designed to burn up and char away, reducing the heat that actually reaches the booster itself.
Historically most rockets have simply dumped their boosters in the ocean, where they become so damaged they are basically a write off. The space shuttle's boosters were an exception, in that they were still dumped in the ocean, but were designed to come down softly and to take minimal damage from the sea water... but it was still an extremely expensive overhaul to get them ready for flight again.
Conceptually the SpaceX boosters require nothing but a fresh coat of ablative paint (and they have actually reflown one without even doing that)... though as it is still relatively early days, they do give them a good going over, and so far only one of the boosters has flown more than twice (though a few have flown twice). Still an incredibly impressive feat.
Because they also land standing up on an autonomous barge (or even better, back on land), recovery is much easier.
They also have many layers of reusability. The engines are extremely expensive, and they are designed to fly for even longer than the boosters; and to ensure this can happen, the boosters have safety mechanisms like a "crush core" that aims to save the engines and other key components even if the booster lands hard. If the crush core goes, the structure of the booster will need significant rework, but all of the super expensive components (including the engines) should be safe.
Take 100 people in space! 😮 Oh my days! At least he's doing things a more constructive way, financially as well. I did read somewhere that he one day would like to colonize Mars. If he keeps going at this rate maybe we'll see those 1st flights to the red planet in the not too distant future. - dave

By the way, that car has already passed Mars :) The engines actually performed better than expected (this was a test flight - they launched the car because it is more interesting than a block of concrete), and instead of a fly-by of Mars, it actually got sent on a wider orbit.

Starship Sn10 or Sn15 could be good reaction video.
The reentry isn’t too hard on the boosters as they do an entry burn to shed off a lot of velocity before they enter the atmosphere.
The ‘burnt’ look is due to soot buildup on the outside from the engines and not the reentry itself.
You can test this yourself by getting a barbecue lighter and turning it upside down.

Wait.. are you saying that you didn't know that? They were building whole space shuttle that can land like that! Check the news sometimes..
Most people are vaguely aware that this is happening, but you would be surprised by how many people are not fully aware of the scope or details. Unless you actively follow space/tech news, this is just a 3 minute clip in the news between a story about a dog that rescued a duck and a story about how the local sports team lost again.
The problem with the space shuttle was that basically only the Orbiter was reusable, and even then the Space Shuttle Main Engines needed major refitting after every single flight. Ultimately it made the Shuttle almost expensive to launch as a Saturn V, a vehicle that was albeit expendable, vastly more powerful than the Space Shuttle.
The goal of SpaceX is to create rapid and reusable flight without actually needing to do major refits between each flight, kind of like how airliners work.
Even sadder is the fact that this year has been bad for Elon I think his Tesla company lost like $6 bil I heard according to 1 vid about the matter and his stocks have been plummeting as investors are backing out and multiple issues have arisen and his behaviour of late(probably in response to his losses) has people questioning his character...
However to me this is the classic Iron Man 3 story of the tony stark slump where everything goes bad but I think Elon will come back from this, you can't keep geniuses like us down!
The thing I admire about Elon is that he went in to both Tesla and SpaceX knowing they could (and most likely would) fail. He used the majority of his earnings from the sale of PayPal to get them going, knowing that even if he failed the gauntlet would be thrown down and industries would be forced to shift.
Elon is human, and doesn't hide behind publicists and media coordinators. Many view this as a mistake, and perhaps it is, and certainly at times he has done things that are inappropriate and inexcusable. But I still admire the work he and all the people at SpaceX and Tesla do, and for all his many faults, I admire Elon's commitment to staying human.

He seems to be one of the few people really DOING anything with his Tesla cars, his tunnel projects, solar projects, his large battery factories, SpaceX, and the brain chip thing (I forget the name) but it is like an implant for the brain which allows access to more of your neurons which could help with stuff like nerve damage or whatever or sight loss and essentially integrate AI with you, as in think of something and your phone will do it. Scary but he is pushing it and good for him as nobody else seems to be on his pace.
