- Welcome back to another video! This week we are all about the free camping and caravan upgrades!
We kick this one off exploring the winton region and head to Long Water hole outside of winton, check out a few things around the town and head north to fig tree waterhole a oasis refuge on the hot plains. Heading north we check out Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine a awesome free camp and 4wd track up to the mine. Before heading into Mt Isa we stop off at Reece and grab some essentials for Bryce to get stuck into some upgrades for our van! Bryce installs a Inline Water filter on the kitchen tap, cuts in a bypass for the grey water tank. Chelsea is her own hairdresser and changes up her hair colour.
Our most exciting upgrade is the Stone Stomper Stone Protection system to protect our van from rocks flicking up from the car. Super easy to install!
We get some Cushion covers for the van to protect them from any wear and tear.

The Stone Stomper certainly looks effective in protecting the front of the caravan. Also consider explicit shielding for your exposed plumbing and possibly brake wiring as well. We had the fresh water tank drain pipe damaged by stones near Mt Augustus last year and lost half of our fresh water as a result. It is now protected by mud-flap type sheeting to redirect the stones.

If you ever come on to Cape York go to Fairview Station. $35 a day with dinner and smoko. All the food you can eat. Hot water showers fridge ice machine. Campfires loving it.

We ordered a stone stomper a few months ago, and agree, they were super easy to deal with and gave advice about measurements. Also came really fast, which was great.

We only discovered this waterhole last week and we thought it was a great spot. Hubby went for a walk up the top and said it was interesting with another waterhole up there. We also camped at Mary Kathleen. One of our favourites. We enjoyed exploring the Ballara mining trail across the highway from Mary Kathleen.
We stayed at Long Pool in 2017 and really enjoyed Winton for a few days . Fun fact ; we lived in the NT in the early 70’s and my husband learnt to water ski in the disused Rum Jungle Uranium mine at Batchelor . No side affects to date and everyone did this . I’m sure if Mary Kathleen was not to be used the authorities would have it fenced off as they now have the Rum Jungle Mine fenced . Don’t really know . Yes stone stomper was a caravan life saver when we first got one and it was in the early days when the fellow was making them in the garage of his Glenelg home where you had to pick them up . Loved your video as usual , so easy to watch and listen to you both .

Hey guys, get yourself a B.E.S.T. water filter and connect onto your water hose when filling the van, they are great in pre-filtering before filling main tanks.

Hey it’s a free camp. Not sure on the amount of time you’re allowed to stay but I’d say a couple weeks potentially. There is no facilities just the old mine and remains of the town.

Hi Bryce, "Courtney" 🤣 Told us just after Mr Huntsman about ** HER Van** so why didn't you let "Courtney" wash HER van, especially those bit from half way up the windows to the roof. Oh yes the stone stomper does a great job But! we travelled to cook town, Kurrumba, Darwin and back to Victoria, with about 5 chips in the window and several on the face of the van, hence why we are getting that clear protection film put up there very soon, I think you put it on your Ranger? Anyway happy travels.

We have and it made a big difference to the water smell and quality but we haven't taken it to outback Qld yet so I'll be interested to see how it goes. Is the Stone Stomper expensive and would you say it was worth the expense, if you've had it on long enough to test? Hair looks great Chelsea - I like the colour. Hey we have never filtered the water coming into the van, only the water we drink 👍
Stone stomper are a bit on the expensive side but worth it for the protection 👍 we haven't been able to give it a proper test yet but can already see how well it covers the front.

While the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine in Cloncurry, Queensland, boasts stunning turquoise blue water, swimming is strongly not recommended due to the radioactive levels still present in the depths of the abandoned open pit.

I wish I knew plumbing like you do, but willing to try something simple. I am curious about that brown putty / epoxy or whatever it is. Can you tell me if one can use it to put a fitting into my existing tank to seal it please? Enjoy your travels! I am thinking about turning 1 of my existing old water tanks into a grey water tank.
Thanks mate! The brown putty is actually just dirt covered silicone, it was done by the installer so hopefully it doesn't leak 🤞 its a good backup to put over the top, I use a product called loctite 55 almost like dental floss and use that to install fittings. 👍

@@darrylweidenhofer I lived in Winton from 1974 to 79. Wild wild west that's for sure. Lot of history there. Qantas was started there. Somehow it was given to Longreach.
Can you tell me how the Discovery park in Mt Isa was. We are looking at heading there Friday for the weekend. We’ve been told some horror stories about the area whilst on the road.
We stayed at the discovery argylla (in Mount isa but the outskirts of town).
It was good, just make sure to lock everything up at night and we had no issues 👍

At some point depending on how my life takes me I want to become a nomad, I was thinking what safety do you have in your vans when you do freedom camping - there are some bad guys out there - can one have a fire arm - sorry just asking
We haven't had any safety concerns in the last 5 years, you get a gut feel in a place and then move if you need to 👍 we just make sure to lock everything up
