- Hi all - I'm headed on holiday! I'm off to Japan for my honeymoon and of course I'm taking my sketchbook with me. I don't know how much I'll create when I'm out there but I wanted the option, so join me as I decide what to take with me for my travel art supply kit! If you haven't been using the Inktense pan set at home, you might not use it in Japan. It's pretty bulky. For pops of color, I carry folded cards made from cheap watercolor paper. On each card, I scribble a grid of Neocolor II, I make it each color as dense as possible. It's a light flat color palette that fits in an envelope. I always have several of these cards in my purse along with a waterbrush, a black waterproof pen (Faber Castell PITT or Uni- ball Air), and a small sketchbook. One of my pre-travel rituals is refreshing the Neocolor cards, or creating a card in the colors of the place I'm traveling to.
The cards are a good idea! I often want a touch of red for flowers but I don’t want to carry a whole red for that because I don’t really use it for anything else.

I found the inktense pan set quite handy with my water brushes, but great idea for the neocolor swatch folded cards!! Will definitely use that in the future, especially when I want to pack super light! A nice way to plan out a colour palette in advance too 🤩

Have a great time! If you are art shopping you might want to get some Holbein pencils. They are amazingly soft and lovely like the Luminance pencils. They are very expensive outside of Japan but they would be a great purchase if you’re there.

I was originally going to Japan for the first time this year for my vacation, but because of other things happening in my life, I decided to change my plans and put off my 1st Japan trip for next year...Now I am really regretting my decision because you are like the 5th person I follow who has also gone or is going to Japan. My anticipation to go and experience everything myself is so high. Thank you for such a great video, I hope you have an amazing trip!

Hi Katie! I have a recommendation for an excellent plein air palette that takes up hardly any space! It's called the Art Toolkit watercolour palette. arttoolkit.com/supplies/watercolor-palettes-and-pans/
I personally have two of them and I fill them with both watercolour and gouache. They are so thin and compact, I cannot imagine using something as large as the Inktense pan set ever again! Have a lovely honeymoon in Japan!!

I've been trying to figure out my travel art kit, and I still need to figure out what I'm taking for my traveler's notebook (I want something slimline that I can take and it be just that for on-the-go sketches). I'm torn between some neocolor ii and some watercolour sheets (viviva and peerless) but this has given me some thoughts on my larger kit (to use in a hotel room or similar when I know I'm going to be sitting down for a few hours and can spend time on it)

Thanks so much for watching! I find travel art kits so hard to pack because the art supplies I use varies on my mood so much! I love the idea of watercolour sheets, but as you say even the supplies we use at the hotel can vary!

Congrats! This is such a helpful video, especially since I'm about to go on a trip where I want to do lots of drawing too. Do you find it difficult to draw in a sketchbook with a soft cover? I like the idea of bringing a soft cover journal on my trip, but was afraid it would not be sturdy enough in my lap for drawing outside.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad it's useful! I found it totally ok to use my soft cover, even when I wasn't sat at a table! I found it easy to use either on the ground or balanced on my knees, and the lightweight quality definitely meant I carried it round with me more than a hardback! That alone makes it worth it for me ☺️

Thanks so much! It was a sort of make it up as a I go sort of task 😆 I didn't use a pattern and just kind of guessed it which isn't very helpful I'm afraid 😂 I did base it off of the Sendak roll though if you wanted a base!

Inktense are here for reason and they are pretty useful as it's not a watercolor, that's something in the middle, especially their pastel watercolor, they're more like gouache. Plus they're not heavy. I have their graphite set and pastel and they're both opaque, so it's pretty smart to take them with you even if you "don't use it" as one commet says🙄. Some art supplies needs not at home, but in voyage. Also (!!!) when it was my gouache stage, i just cleared all slots from my W&N Cotman 12 colors palette and put in these slots gouache (there is "souse package" in my country, or, if you used to another package, maybe "quick smoothie", where you can squeeze gouache from big soft plastic package in this slots. Rosa Studio, not professional, but for me that's ok). I already saw yours drawing in Japan in Inst. Hope that trip was good!
For me I carry more, I am pretty heavy handle hahaha. I use caran d'ache gouache in metal box, Sennelier La Petite package (because they have so good penal!!!) for my Van Gogh + Schmincke watercolor, Caran d'ache watercolor brush, 12 neocolor, 12 watercolor Caran D'ache pencils, 3 grey Ecolines for random portraits, mitsubishi gel pen 0,5, kuretake fudegokoshi + tombow fudenosuke for moody sketches, 12 caran d'ache brushmarkers fibralo and hahnemuhle Nostalgie A5 landscape sketchbook. I go to long trips only just for drawing and never know what I will use😂
Great point about the Inktense! Haha I'm still very glad I took them, I thought they were quite lightweight and I did use them 😆 What a great idea to use your conman water palette but filled with gouache - I'll have to remember that for the future!
What a great bunch of art supplies you carry! That sounds like a great range, and I totally understand about wanting it all because we don't know we'll want when there! It's the plight of a mixed media artist I think 😅
Me too Katie - I LOVE the Posca Beige pen. Just the other day I bought another one just to have it on hand. I don't want to ever run out of it in mid drawing, you know..lol..I hope you're having a blast of a time and I can't wait to see all your art goodies that you purchased. OH, and congratulations on your honeymoon and all - super happy for you!! 🙂. We're planning a trip to Europe this summer so this video was perfect. I was actually taking out supplies as you were taking them out to see how I would pick and choose. It really is tough because we love ALL OUR SUPPLIES..lol.
Hi !! I don’t know which cities will you visiting but maybe you’ll find more convenient, and exiting, buy some of the supplies during your travel (if they’re easy or common editions); big cities as madrid, Paris, Rome etc have great stores of art supplies (and sometimes the prices are more convenient as well) ☺️ you may check websites in advance; have a great trip !!
