PS3 Slim Power Off / Shut Down - Demo And Fix - Not YLOD [cech2501A]

  • I picked up a PS3 Slim model CECH-2501A that was experiencing "video issues" that a pawn shop wanted 50 bucks for. I paid 40 - but got a bit more work than the reflow that I thought it would take.
    I finally determined that the final diagnostic was an OVERHEATING PSU (power supply).
    Steps to fix this shit.
    Unplug PS3.
    Remove PS3 shell.
    Remove top of case to PSU.
    Place PSU back in PS3.
    Take note of original positionings of dials.
    PFC +B RV301 Counterclockwise 100%
    OPC RV302 Clockwise 100%
    Leave lids off and turn your system on.
    DONE.
    If you would like to put the PS3 shell back on - well, don't until you do a case mod and add some fans over the PSU. I'm going to be dropping x4 120mm brushless fans over the entire PSU, and placing some screen between the blades and the PSU.
    Saw a question in my email box just now.
    What a persons gotta do to solve this shit.
    1. OPERATE THE UNIT WITHOUT A LID. Test
    2. IF THERE ARE KNOBS, ADJUST KNOBS. Test.
    3. IF THERE IS NO KNOBS, GET A NEW POWER BOARD THE ONE WITH KNOBS. Test.
    4. REFLOW THE MOTHERBOARD. Test.
    5. REFLOW THE POWERBOARD. Test.
    6. A UNIQUE SIMILAR SYMPTOM ISSUE IS THE POWER BUTTON MINIBOARD AND MINICABLE. Test.
    7. IF YOU WENT TOO CRAZY DOING ELECTRICAL MODS GET A NEW BIG FAN. Test.

    I did some digging around through the comments here - and there was a few instances of other combinations on the dial - figured I would put this in a pinned comment! :D
    alternate combo 1 : i had to move the PFC to 1 o clock and the OFC to 7 o clock. moving em like u said didn't work but it might be different for each system. but thats the combo that worked for me
    alternate combo 2 : it worked for me , i just tried an counterclock wise combination on both potentionmeters and it worked

    There's a different PSU in some Slims (like mine) were the screws are right next to each other. They are still labeled the same though (but I think in a different order). Either way, I turned both to the left about a quarter turn because that's what another vid suggested, and it worked like a charm. But this vid was the first to give me the idea, so thanks loads!

    As of typing this comment my ps3 has been on for about 2 hours without shutting off, not sure if it will stay that way but it's already an improvement, my ps3 used to only last about 15 minutes before shutting off.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH! :D

    This worked great for me. My pots are located side by side (unlike the video) and I try doing both to the left which worked for a few days then died again. So I kept moving them both left and it kept lasting a day or so. This method with one right one left has made it work properly for over 1 week now, so thank you. Fan etc all working in tandem, it's about as warm as it should be so I'm not scared it'll go on fire. Mint video man

      That's so awesome this is working for so many PS3 gamers, almost 50,000 views in just two years. For a video repair guide, that's not bad.
      There are always so many revisions to the different models over time, it is tough to stay up to pace on every new motherboard.
      My next PS3 mod will have the power supply on an external box with a couple fans, and fans installed where the power supply was.

    If your PS3 is exactly like this one in the video, then yes.
    I don't recall where the letters are on mine. So, if not, notice that each knob is not perfectly round, and the same shape is drawn under the knob. Now try to match each knob with the line drawn under - around it (i.e. the round side fits the round line below on the board, and the rectangle sides fit their lines too.
    Sorry if this is confusing, English is not my first language.

    You're still fairly safe - you can use a plastic meshing material to keep things from falling inside and to prevent anything from contacting the board.

  • @Sh76aboo6_MuZkar

    each knob should have its perimeter matching all the lines drawn around it on the board. This way, the right knob will be directed towards the back of the console, and the left knob is exactly the opposite (towards the front of the console).

    Hey Webb I have a question. My friend gave me his 120gb slim ps3 I haven’t opend it yet I tried that stupid hair dryer trick and I've been looking through a lot of videos which were bs. I subscribed to you even if it doesn't work I'll stay subscribed because this one seems very good. But my main question is do you think it'll work for it first try. Because when I put the power cord in the light is red I turn it on literally 3-5 seconds later it shuts off. Thanks please respond

    • @DuctTapedGoat
      @DuctTapedGoat  Před 10 lety +1

      Likely it'll work first try. Hair dryers don't get as hot as a PAINT STRIPPING HEAT GUN. A good paint stripper will get over 470 degrees to reflow solder, use aluminum foil to protect the plastic, and also it doesn't hurt to inject add some solder in any of the grounding points around the board.

  • @NAMCO5
    @NAMCO5 Před 12 lety

    I am in the UK and will be trying this tomorrow. Its a 250gb slim model and I have been turning Anti-clockwise (with case off) by 10 degrees and it did not work! This is on other vids on here. Fingers crossed your solution will work or I will have to just buy a PSU unit that is no where to be found in the UK APS-270.

  • @gaara7ful
    @gaara7ful Před 4 lety +1

    • @DuctTapedGoat
      @DuctTapedGoat  Před 4 lety +1

      Well to really explain what you are doing would require a thermal image of the ps3 boards under symptoms and force calculations for the heat of solder and resistance drops...
      But i bet your PS3 Big Fan is dying, physical strikes work for moving parts but can damage working moving parts affected as a byproduct of a strike - such as the BDROM. Fans are cheap, might just need a cleaning.

    • @gaara7ful
      @gaara7ful Před 4 lety

  • @Sh76aboo6_MuZkar
    @Sh76aboo6_MuZkar Před 11 lety

    I tries this and it did not work by rotating 100% to CW and CCW.
    I found that mine were not in their original directions. So, I restored them to the default directions, then rotated both them from there about 1mm CCW instead. AND IT WORKED!

  • @DuctTapedGoat
    @DuctTapedGoat  Před 12 lety

    I'm actually making a video response to this with the results of the case mod!
    After the mod, I've been able to get 72 hours uptime - all ingame under heavy load!
    I added 2 12v PC case fans, one is a 3.5 inch fan and the other is an 80mm fan.
    When you're in there, keep in mind the two heat points. One is to the right, behind the BluRay Drive, which is the set of transistors on the aluminum sink. The other is everything in the path of the CPU/GPU heat exhaust in the power brick.

    However, in mine the screws were already off the center locations, so I restored them then tried 10% to the left (CCW) for both and I was able to turn it on again. I will try and play to see if it works for hours.

      (tldr: cool that power supply! 😉)
      Heya! I am actually prepping to fix some Fat PS3 units with same issues as this Slim had. The knobs alone were not enough - it took reflow and new paste to get it to start staying on at all, then to get any hours of gameplay like 8+ hours without canceling dead midgame, the knobs needed adjustments, and then we could get 80+ hours. If it's offing itself quickly like immediate then it's board issue likely, but if it's offing quickly like 8 minutes, then the power supply components need fans/cooling, I had to remove the power cover and the entire lid before adding fans! :) It's an old vid but I am still active on this! :D

      the mini power control board can cause simular symptoms, I have never had to Reflow repair a mini power button
      there's not much to a ps3 that needs repaired, we all know the graphics are gonna burn out and why
      mini power control board
      power supply board
      GPU mainboard
      blue ray lens
      big fan
      i.t's such a sick and twisted field, that's why I am in the field of fixing it.
      the Knobs are most likely directly resulting the capacitors discharge and affecting the GPUCPU and effectively overclocking for a potential solid 72 hours gameplay experience
      that's pretty good

      I haven't worked on one without the two knobs yet, so likely there is.
      The issue usually comes from either,
      Overheating Power Supply or Overheating GPU Chip
      Might be able to install the knobs if we can find out where that exact point is on another board without them.

    My problem isn't as serious, my system turns off, but it always turns right back on.
    My question, has anyone run into problems fidling with the OPC and PFC screws?
    I don't mind if it fries the APS unit, they're easy enough to replace,
    But I couldn't take getting YLOD... that'd be too much.
    So anyone?

    Hey Mick, I had this problem, and saw your vid, so I opened my ps3 up and got the power supply, didn't have the screws so I decided just to get a new PSU. Got it couple days ago, worked fine until yesterday the same shit happened, does this mean its overheating or my whole console is fucked?

      @matt_mtr8800 Před 8 lety

      +michael webb Yeah bud, before I could try that I completely broke it by putting too much pressure on the cpu, got my mates ylod (fat)to see if I could fix it but no luck.

  • @DuctTapedGoat
    @DuctTapedGoat  Před 12 lety

    Are you able to get it to boot and show any display? Is the system fan operating properly? Are you running it with the the lid off of the system case and with the lid off of the power supply case?
    Make a video of it and I'll give you a full diagnosis, there's a chance you've simply got another issue going on.

  • @TheDouglas717
    @TheDouglas717 Před 8 lety +1

    After messing with the screws I could get it to stay on longer, about 10 seconds at the most but still wouldn't stay on. So I bought a new power supply for 20 bucks, put it in, same problem. Turns off instantly. Guess it was not a power supply problem. fml

    • @DuctTapedGoat
      @DuctTapedGoat  Před 8 lety +1

      Like I've mentioned, the power button control board can cause same symptoms, and I never messed with the screws until after I did a Reflow on both boards with a heat gun.

    Hey man, thanks for this. i have a slim cech2512b and with same psu, 270 aps. I tried your fix last week and it worked great, i was playing for 4 hrs tops since then. But i was just playing nba2k18 earlier then it shut off on its own again (no red light, nothing, just off). Just wanna ask for your help. Should i try the screws again, with a different combination?

    • @DuctTapedGoat
      @DuctTapedGoat  Před 6 lety

      Jeno Fujita Totally - Operate the unit without a lid until its dialed in, dialing a knob back bit by bit from maximum, and if it seems to get worse reset to maximum clockwise and counterclockwise and try again! I had 80 hours in-game testing once it was solid, (rubber banded the controller overnight for 3 nights to just run around aimlessly) and did a case mod to add 2 fans afterwards just to be sure. I never reinstalled the PSU lid, but didn't want the heat to reach the GPU is why I added fans.
      But yeah, 2nd best combo is each knob backed off from max a little bit

      @retrogeneric5687 Před 6 lety

      Michael Webb thnx i''ll be checking that out. After i figure out the screws hopefully i can do a case mod. Do you remember your exact combination for the potentios though? I was thinking since we've got same psus i might try your configuration

    • @DuctTapedGoat
      @DuctTapedGoat  Před 6 lety +1

      Jeno Fujita I ended up selling that model after a year or so, what I recall was the importance of CW and CCW - if the clockwise and counterclockwise are reversed, symptoms are worsened.
      When I was running combinations, the best successes came from max CW and max CCW - then bring each back from max the TINIEST bit. Then take one knob and move it a tiny bit more until symptoms worsen, taking note of the previous dial setting. Reset each to max, move both a tiny bit again, then move to the other dial, bit by bit attempts until symptoms worsen - bring it back to the previous setting and bring the other knob to where you took note - then budge them both simultaneously bit by bit toward maximum. Notes notes notes! :)
      Also - I did a reflow on the mainboard because potential pooled heat damage to the gpu and reapplied thermal paste - also modifying the big fan to be on maximum speed at all times. Ultimately I installed a dial to control all 3 fans (including the 2 aftermarket) and left it at max all the time.
