- I don't know what to say about the past week. Just watch the vlog.
Oh, and if you're completely new to Roth then you should read this guide on where to start: www.penguin.co.uk/articles/fi...
American Pastoral
‘Swede’ Levov is living the American dream. He glides through life sustained by his devoted family, his demanding yet highly rewarding (and lucrative) business, his sporting prowess, his good looks. He is the embodiment of thriving, post-war America, land of liberty and hope.
Until the sunny day in 1968, when the Swede’s bountiful American luck deserts him.
The tragedy springs from devastatingly close to home. His adored daughter, Merry, has become a stranger to him, a fanatical teenager capable of an outlandishly savage act of political terrorism that plunges the Levov family into the political mayhem of sixties America, and drags them into the underbelly of a seemingly ascendant society.
Rendered powerless by the shocking turn of events, the Swede can only watch as his pastoral idyll is methodically torn apart.

The Human Stain is my absolute favorite Roth novel. I read it right before seeing the movie.
I'm salivating at the prospect of reading these, now. Always felt daunted by Roth but your enthusiasm has convinced me to proceed!
Really appreciate the tag at the end - fiction is a great way to understand the non-fiction world we live in. Thank you for this :)
A pleasure Sam, thanks for commenting.
Human Stain and American Pastoral have been on my tbr for a long time. The plot agains America seems like the perfect book to read right now.
I have been wanting to explore Roth for awhile now. These sound terrific.
Wow Will another amazing video after buying all the new Virginia Woolfe books and preordered the amazing Russian series due in January. The Philip Roth books look right up my street. Fingers crossed.
I've been meaning to read more Philip Roth since I'd read 'Everyman' about 8 years ago now. It's one of those stories that stayed with me ever since and I've been recommending that to friends. Thanks for these wonderful recommendations.
Lovely editions! They would look great on my bookshelf...
Oh god, love these vintage editions of Roth's books. I haven't read any of his books, would love to read them!
this could not be more relevant right now! your enthusiasm for Roth has really peaked my interest would love to read some of his work. I also know what you mean about reading fiction to understand the reality and even history. I am currently reading the Posionwood Bible and it's so interesting to get a fictional approach to history
I have been avoiding "politics" in books until recently. Now it seems fascinating to me, especially these last months with the US elections. I think Philip Roth's books will be very interesting to explore this topic.
your voice reminds me of John Peel! glad I've found your channel, cheers! (huge fan of Roth here, btw)
These editions look lovely, and I've never read Roth (and always wanted to).
Philip Roth is one of my favourite authors; he should have won the Nobel prize for Literature.
He's an author I just have never got round to trying. What an opportune moment & an inspired choice.
Sounds very timely. I'd be interested to read his books for sure.
Love Roth's books. Thank you for promoting them. So appropriate right now. 😢
Unfortunately, yes.
I haven't read any Roth but would love to!
I've only read Everyman and would love to try these four! Fingers crossed from a devastated American in need of some Roth consolation
These books sound really interesting, will have to check them out.
Having read the first 4 Zuckerman books, would love to read the rest. Roth is as vital and insightful now (if not more) as he ever was.
I would love these, just so this insane, insane year makes a tiny bit more sense.
I've had Roth in my wishlist for ages and it seems freakily appropriate that a number of us should be reaching for his novels in light of what's just happened. Novels can give people hope even if all they need is their own experiences reflected and put into context so yes please, I would love to enter, but I will end up picking them up even if I don't win because. Covers.
Ha! Because. Covers. Quite.
I didn't even talk about the Roth novel that might be his best in this video. Maybe another time...
How have I not read any Roth yet? I feel like you're the Bookish Fairy Godmother I never had but always needed!
I'm going to get some business cards made with Bookish Fairy Godmother written on them - love it!
Fantastic video and lovely to see the Roth love. I just read The Human Stain this past summer and it has stuck in my mind. Looking forward to dive further into his catalogue in the coming year - preferably with some *cough cough* new Vintage editions ;)
Glad you enjoyed The Human Stain. As you might have guessed, I think American Pastoral is even better.
Bet this puts a smile on your face: czcams.com/video/nVV5Z36H5Ck/video.html
They sound really interesting and considering the current political events also highly relevant!
I haven't read anything by Roth! These sound amazing. And terrifying.
I'm yet to read Philip Roth. I've been meaning to for some years.I shall push them towards the top of my list, but if win them, I will read them sooner. Fingers crossed.
I haven´t read that much Roth but what I've read I really liked. I'd love to win these and get more into his writing.
Yes, I'd really love to read some Roth. Roth is probably the author that has been the longest on my to-read list.
Vintage editions are the best.Fingers crossed
Those editions are gorgeous! I'm mid dissertation induced reading slump so 4 new books would be much appreciated to revitalise my reading and to help come to terms with the political turmoil (mess) that has been 2016!
Good luck emerging from the slump. And with the dissertation!
I love a good dysfunctional family story! Count me in!
I've been meaning to read Philip Roth for years now. American Pastoral seems so relevant, it's pretty crazy.
Count me in, please! Sounds great
I read American Pastoral and must agree with you, it's brilliant! The Human Stain sounds like something I'd like to continue with, I guess. Count me in, please! Also, the covers, excellent!
And looking forward to that collab video, who might it be? Hmmm.
Hmmm, I wonder....
I have not read enough American literature. This sounds like a great start.
As a book lover i'm ashamed to say i've never read Roth! Loved the message in the vid, appropriate and we all need a bit of hope right now 📚
I've actually never been much of a Roth fan - perhaps it's time to give them another try as I'm definitely a lone voice in the wilderness. Hope I'm not to late for the giveaway....
These books look great, and very timely.
Well, it's some kind of a difficult relationship I have with Mr.Roth. I tried to read two of his books to date and each time I was not convinced. But some weeks ago, I promised someone, that I will give Mr.Roth a go again. And I have to admit this package sounds really interesting the way you're presenting it. And even in these days it seems to be an appropriate choice. So I would be happy to win and find out.
These sound amazing, as soon as I heard I wanted to dive straight into the novel I'm reading now (Autumn, Ali Smith). I'd love to read these so count me in! :)
I hear very good things about Autumn, hope you're enjoying it.
Vintage has been coming out with really great series editions lately!! I just saw photos of the Russian Classics collection that Jen Campbell posted on Instagram! They are gorgeous!!
I haven't read any Philip Roth, but I've recently been intrigued by American Pastoral because of the film adaptation that's just been made!
Yep. Those Russians. All the feels.
Any book that makes some sense of the current political mess would be a really important read, so thank you so much for your recommendations!
I've just come from watching your collaboration vlog with Jen Campbell where you certainly piqued my interest to start reading Roth. I hope I'm not too late to enter your giveaway :)
Went and bought American Pastoral and The Plot Against America straight away after seeing this. Will, I feel like you'd really enjoy The Sellout if you haven't already read it - you should give it a go!
Cheers Ben! I spotted a copy of The Sellout on someone's desk today, so it popped into my head once again. Maybe I'll feature it in my Christmas Reading Book Haul video...
I would like to read more of the big American authors, and Roth is one of them. I'd like to be entered:)
I loved the human stain. I have not read anything else. This election was embarrassing for some of us here and it happened. but thank you for the book suggestions to help with this crazy nightmare.
My fav is "Letting go"
I confess that I read Portnoy's Complaint many years ago-but that's it! I would love to read more this coming year.
I'll confess in return that I've read lots of Roth - but not Portnoy's Complaint!
Actually, I forgot that I read The Human Stain-I don't think I realized it was part of a trilogy, as I picked it up after seeing the so-so film adaptation. Anyway, I picked up a used copy of The Plot Against American at my local used bookstore, so thanks for the recommendation!
Another positive video, where you encourage me to read more good books.....I have to revisit Philip Roth as I haven't read anything by him for at least a couple of years. (read 6 books so far so well down on 31!)
Yes, American Pastoral is brilliant. A definite five star novel for me, as is Human Stain. Haven't read I Married a Communist yet but will look for it. If you like American Pastoral, you probably like Independence Day by Richard Ford and John Updike's Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest, Germinal by Emile Zola, and I could go on, but....
Just finishing The Stranger by Albert Camus. The writing is just brilliant. I hadn't read Camus for 30 years and will now have to reread more of his books! Yes and I am getting to Virginia Woolf....only read Mrs Dalloway and To The Lighthouse...
Ah yes, Richard Ford. LOVED The Sportswriter and Independence Day, slightly less keen on The Lay of the Land and didn't even bother with Let Me Be Frank With You (partly because of that punning title). I'm afraid Camus is one I've never read (or if I have I can't remember!) and my Woolf experience is limited to Mrs Dalloway but I'll certainly read more. I think you'll get on with I Married A Communist, look forward to your thoughts in the future.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't yet read any Roth!! I would absolutely love to win the set, they sound so incredibly interesting! At my university I'm currently studying US History and we've just got to the Cold War era, and I've really been meaning to pick up some fiction set in the years I've been learning about :)
I'd love to enter for a chance to win those Roth books!! They sound awesome
Roth is perhaps one of the most influencing authors in my life. By sheer luck I first discovered him by way of finding Plot Against America on the shelves of nearby bookstore. After Roth, it's really hard to like a lot of authors because he set the bar too high.
I read Human Stain a while back and absolutely loved it, but haven't been able to read anything else by Roth since. I do hope to read his more of him one of these days though.
Reading Turkish writer Pamuk at the moment. You should check him out.
Thanks Waseem!
I have not read any Roth....yet. I am anxious to especially if it can help make some sense of the US election campaign and result. Thank you for the chance to win a gorgeous set of books.
Thanks for commenting Elaine
I would recommend Portnoy's Complaint, it seems a little bit different, but still good in my opinion. I have not read another book by Roth, but finger crossed I could win four of them. Thank you!
I haven't read any of those books but I have read Roth's trilogy of Zuckerman books, which includes one book one what happened if Anne Frank had survived the Holocaust and Portnoy's Complaint. Thank you for thinking of us in America. As a gay man, I am scared at the thought of my civil rights being taken away. Thanks also for talking about why fiction is important, especially in these trying times.
The Ghost Writer is that first Zuckerman novel (which I picked as the perfect starting point for Roth newbies in this article: www.penguin.co.uk/articles/find-your-next-read/reading-guides/2016/oct/where-to-start-with-philip-roth/)
Don, I can promise you that the LGBT community and this that support them in the UK have a very close eye on what's happening in the States. To see any cvil rights eroded would obviously be a disaster, just when some real progress was being made. You have our support.
They are all fascinating. Please enter me in the draw.
I believe you have convinced me to give Philip Roth's books a try. Which would be a better introduction to his work, American Patoral or The Ghost Writer or either?
I'd say The Ghost Writer is a gentler intro but if you want to mainline the hard stuff go for American Pastoral!
Thank you for the recommendation!
I am on a road trip around America & just had my car broken into and a lot of my books stolen. Would love a few new ones to ease the pain... :( though I saw American Pastoral in theaters a week or so ago in Minneapolis and was emotionally devastated by that as well.
tl;dr it's been a bad, bad, bad November
Oh, Caro! What awful luck, poor you. Here's hoping that karma balances for you in some wonderful way. How was the film? I love the book so much I'm not sure I can bear to watch the film.
The film was excellent! Heartbreaking. I haven't read the book, but I know Roth's reputation for emotional demolition so I expected it to be heavy. It was on another level. The acting was phenomenal & a well-done debut for Ewan McGregor as director. Hard to believe it was in production for as long as it was.
If you can believe it, I managed to smash my glasses this morning! So now as well as being adrift without my books I am also blind as a bat and the only driver on this road trip. Will we make it back to Baltimore? Gotta love a good challenge!
Oh my lord. I hate to say it but we have a phrase in the UK that says these things come in threes. Brace yourself!
Please don't crash. And maybe leave a message when you make it back to Baltimore. Or an opticians!
I really want to read 'The Plot Against America' (so, enter me in the draw). I think it will be an uncomfortable and truly terrifying experience given the recent election news. Seems that now is the perfect time to dive into Roth's world and really feel that political horror (which will seem very close to the bone right now) that he's known for creating.
Never read anything by him, sounds really interesting though!
I would love to take part in the giveaway :) Roth is one of my favourite authors.
I've not read any Roth. I really should. You've made me want to rather badly damn you. Sounds like it's a very very very apt book. They all sound great through. More books I need 🙄😋
Wow, this is such a good recommendations, I am definitely going to read the human stain. I hope that can make me understand better the world we are leaving in... I would love to enter the giveaway, but if not, I think they have it in my library...
I'm not sure the book exists to make sense of the world we live in right now! Maybe someone's writing it as we speak...?
I guess every book give us some insight about the world we are living in...
if you are unable to give away all 31, I am fairly certain I would still be thrilled to win 4. would love to be considered.
I would love a chance to win the Roth books!
All of these books sound fascinating, please do count me in for the giveaway.
After that finishing piece about fictions place in a nonsensical time, and how Roth in particular has a place in these kind of times, how could one not be interested in these four books. Put my name down for consideration please!
I hated Portnoy's Complaint, but I'd really like to enter this giveaway to give Roth another chance. I'm mostly curious about The Human Stain.
Am I too late? Please say no and put me in your list for Roth give away! I have read 'Letting Go' and I promised myself to read him again...so maybe now with your help I'll get the chance.Best wishes, Maria.
I would love to enter the giveaway. A book to help me make sense of all of this would be nice.
Anything that can help me understand what's going on right now would be helpful! I've never read Roth and have always meant to read American Pastoral. The Plot Against America is now top of my list. Speaking of the ability of fiction to predict the future you also reminded me of the Black Mirror/Cameron pig incident... but let's not dwell on that, ew. And of course George Orwell.
The Black Mirror/Cameron moment was something you just couldn't have written! And of course Orwell was averse to a pig or two himself ;)
It would be wonderful to explore his ideas. Suppose I win this giveaway.... ?
Never read anything by Roth, but very keen to now, especially if it will make a little sense of the election outcome! Would love to be entered in the giveaway :)
I'd love to be entered in the giveaway thank you! Philip Roth is great!
Roth is a huge gap in my reading. (Well, I've read Everyman...)
Sounds veeeeeery topical. I would like to be entered into the giveaway!
Truth stranger than fiction?x
'Vote for Lindbergh, or vote for war.'
