- It took me a while to finish but it's finally done.
This is a video guide for players, new or seasoned, who are looking to get into the Rune Fencer (RUN) job in Final Fantasy XI. This is my first time making a video of this sort, let alone of this scale, so if I make another one of these I'll do better having learned from experience.
I hope you get something out of it and if there's any suggestions for improvement be sure to let me know in the comments below.

I may not play final fantasy 11 anymore but I do enjoy these videos explaining classes I could play as that werent available on the ps2 or xbox versions back several years ago.
To further delve, I play final fantasy 14 now
I opened RUN on my galka mule a few months ago and have slowly started gearing for it, although I'm not familiar with tanking at all. This guide gives a great overview of what RUN can do and I'm sorry you're on a different server because I would love to watch you in action! SO happy to find your channel I'll be giving the GEO video a look as well.
Very helpful and clear! Looking forward to your future guides.
Your written guide is something have used quite a bit throughout my Rune Fencer career, you've made it very easy to understand.
I'm glad it's been of use.
I've always been a better writer than I have been a speaker so making this video was a bit nervy for me. I'll probably get better at videos of this sort in due course though.
I actually need to extend it a bit come to think of it.
Great guide and video. Keep them coming.
Good stuff Rua! I'm Miochael on the Asura Server and I use your guide faithfully in helping gear my Rune Fencer. I'm close to getting an Epeolatry and someday hope to get a Lionheart. Hope to see you on game!
I really enjoyed this guide. Wonderful job.
I watched this video and the RUN DPS video multiple times when I came back to the game a little over 2 years ago. Really helped me understand the job. Still trying to get a feel for when the hybrid tanking part of the job is best utilized. Would like to see an updated video with some equip sets like some of your more recent videos.
Awesome guide. Helped me grasp what needs to be done with RUN. Some guides are so boggling I have to simply wing it.
Thank you for making these guides.
So much info. This job is nuts. Gonna take a while.
You know your way around Vana'diel. Amazing stuff here. And I have a ton of learning to do
Thank you for making these videos. I'm relearning everything since I been gone from ffxi more than a decade.
You were playing ff14 werent you?
My next guide to putting together a job. I was 1 of the first Aegis Ochain pld on the server back in ww2 days. Very interested in run after seeing your guide here. cheers
thank you for making this video.
6 years ago holy I feel old this rekindled me into the game
neat guide~ keep it coming!
Hey this is awesome. Thanks for this.
Thank you. Great insight! -Hotcarl (Shiva)
Thank's for the Video !
If we were on the same server, I'd accept any lecture or tips from you. Luckily you've contributed to the wikis. Be well sir! Thanks again!
Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Guide :)
Hoyl fuck, now this is a guide. Coming back after 2 year break and lookin to play Rune Fencer, ty.
good job. keep it up
Is there any breakdown on which RUN artifact / relic / empyrean gear is worth getting and/or upgrading?
great guide but i have a favour to ask ive been using your guide now for quite some time trying to tweak and strengthen my rune fencer with your guide on bg wiki it shows sets of gear but doesnt show augments or things so trying to get stronger weapon skills or 5 hit builds seem to be a bit difficult im mix and matching not the best rune fencer at all but i am trying to learn from your guide :)
I really enjoy RUN, but your macro set looks a lot better than mine, can i get it from you.
Awesome video, lots of good information. A note though, "Pflug" is a German word pronounced like "fluke".
I'm trying to be a good tank. Obviously peeps in my LS are better geared and I cant hold hate. Itd be nice if gear wasn't as specialized but I'm a FF14 player returning to FF11 as a Rune Fencer. I need time and practice but selfishly I want gearing to faster. Thanks for the guide!! It really does help.
Please make an updated guide
I do like it when you explained how to do solo skill chain with my that helps a lot I did plan to use this job for Vagery for af3 stuffs I would love to know more for pup solo escha kills. and Geo too.
I've got a few PUP videos on the channel and a PUP guide is in the works, I need to finish off the second part to this RUN guide (DPS side of the job) before I get onto that.
I think I'm going to need some input from the other PUP I know on Asura before I begin putting a structure together. Still, watch this space!
Alright I look forward to watching it :)
This makes me wonder if the RUN can be a good supplement to a PLD in the same party.
im a PLD but thinking abt trying out rune fencer or samurai tanking.
Hey I have just come back to FFXI as I wanted to give RUN a good go. I am a little overwhelmed as its a lot more in depth than most jobs are. However I have come across your guides written and video and they are awesome. Thank you so much! However I do have a question if subbing BLU what spells would you take? I can guess on using cocoon and some self healing ones but I don't want to pick the wrong ones.
Cocoon / Blank Gaze / Jettatura / Healing Breeze / Wild Carrot
Rest can honestly be filled for Killer Traits or HP.
SplitFinn Thanks a bunch you have been extremely helpful much appreciated.
I'm still new with RUN, I don't quite have the ultimate weapon yet, i'm using GS from Oboro currently, fully augmented. I'm having issues maintaining hate though. My group has a thf in it, the moment he WS, I loose hate and can't seem to get back from him. Is there a way I can generate hate enough that it won't turn to him at all? We are all fairly new, but he already is getting his damage up to 25-30k.
what armor Is he wearing at the end of the video?
One day, I will try this game out!
I must!
I mean it, I really must!
Discount campaign is on atm in SE store 'till May 29.
so did u try it yet lol
RUN/SAM All the way!
how do you have your macros set up?
great vid. one question though, does everyone have capped parrying skill now? or is it still difficult?
Parrying skill is very easy to cap these days, for RUN especially.
Put on some Inquartata +% equipment, like the Ogma's Cape and the Erilaz Leg Guards, go into a PDT set, eat some skill-up bonus food and go pull a bunch of monsters and 'funnel' them like I did in this video.
Odds are you'll cap the parrying skill within 20-30 minutes.
Thanks!
SplitFinn my god cap parry in 30 mins.... this game.. I cry I played so many years and wasted what you all can do in a week now... why... it's no fun of it's given to you so easy.
hey bud u making a updated video of rune?
How much of a priority do you feel a 5-hit build is for RUN? I would think a tank would be getting substantial TP just from taking hits, no?
I'll be addressing this in the follow-up video to this guide, due sometime next week (keep an eye out for it!).
But, to answer right now. A 5-hit is actually not very hard to get, you need around +70 Store TP to achieve it. Generally speaking, this is what you want to aim for in a 5-hit build.
Accuracy - 1150~1250Attack - 1150~1200Store TP - 70 (5-Hit)Double Attack - 25%Triple Attack - 13%
Getting hit, and getting Tactical Parry TP procs isn't enough to generate enough TP to competently DPS; you need to have a proper TP gain set to make it worthwhile. The thing is, Resolution and Dimidiation both benefit massively from 'TP Overflow'; or that they get very powerful when you break 2000% or so TP before you use them. You'll notice in my RUN DPS videos (Kin, Kyou especially) that I hold TP rather than fire at 1000%.
I'll go into this more when the video comes out next week!
Hey quick question , what area is that @16:30? and the Idle area? i havent played in forever just curious.
16:30 is Western Adoulin, near the zoneline to Eastern Adoulin.
The idle area is Eastern Adoulin right next to Octavien, the NPC who begins the RUN quest.
SplitFinn thank you!
took me 89 attempts to unlock
This video is so quiet
I can hardly hear you even at max volume on my phone.

You don't go into much detail about vallation merits. The FFXI AH run guide recommends 5/5 pflug, 5/5 vallation. What are your throughts on Vallation merits Vs Rune enhancement merits. Pros/Cons?
Apologies for that, there was additional dialogue for that section but I had to trim it to save 5-6 minutes on the video's duration.
As I said in the guide, you really can't go wrong with Group One options as long as you stay away from Lunge/Gambit. The AH guide does indeed say that but that's just one way of going about it.
Rune Enchantment merits are mandatory as far as I see it. Increased resistance values from runes equates to more magic evasion, and especially after the Vex/Attunement nerf this option has shifted from 'highly advised' to 'mandatory'. I'm extremely fond of 5/5 Pflug because, coupled with Rune Enchantment 5/5 and some 'Resist-All' gear I use I'm practically immune to ailments which would otherwise end tanks.
Vallation is an option certainly, but I've never been fond of it. Vallation would only really shine if you were covering multiple elements, thus 15% becomes 20%. Stacking x3 runes of the same and with 5/5 Vallation you're looking at -60% MDT, which is already a diminished effect since you've gone beyond the 50% reduction in gear (it counts towards it but goes over cap).
In summation, the majority of things that can either make a fight frustrating or outright kill you are not heavy amounts of magic damage but rather status ailments like Doom or Charm. 5/5 Vallation does nothing for blunting those ailments whereas 5/5 Rune Enchantment and 5/5 Pflug will do wonders for blocking them.
@@SplitFinn was eondring about that mdt vs the cap. Thanks for clearing that up.
Only 4 years late, but what legs and feet are those? The RUN JSE feet look like cheap tennis shoes.
Hey I just started XI again, after several years of being afk. I'm interested in doing some video es myself for new/returning players, guides, etc. I'm also on the Asura server. Could I shoot you a friend request?
Sure thing, I'm not going to be around too much for the next two or three months though.
Finishing up my Master's degree and starting graduate work.
I need this in FFXIV! lol
I dont play this game but I love your voice??? Sorry not to be creepy
What? I can't hear you
Why is he whispering?
I can barely hear you ; ;
Sadly this was my first video so it’s not very good quality. My setup has gotten a lot better lately and I will come back to this job.
@@SplitFinn I look forward to seeing that! I know the content you have is great. :D
I'mma subscribe to support you!!
it has been labled outdated...meaning......... PogChamp
Could you talk quieter?
