  • Born Ruby Stevens, she was orphaned when she was four. A chance audition led to a chorus job. By 17 she was a Zeigfield Girl. At 20 she earned excellent reviews for a bit part in a Broadway play - and she had a new name: Barbara Stanwyck.

    Barbara’s first marriage was to vaudeville headliner, Frank Fay. When Hollywood beckoned, it was Fay who convinced Frank Capra to give Barbara her first real break. But as Stanwyck’s career took off, Fay’s sank. Fay’s jealousy and drinking led to divorce. Barbara’s greatest love was actor Robert Taylor, her second husband. But even that didn’t last and she spent the greater part of her life alone.
    However, there was always the one love she could rely on: her work - in over 80 feature films and a rich career in television. Included are clips from: Ladies of Leisure , Annie Oakley, Golden Boy, The Lady Eve, Meet John Doe, Double Indemnity, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers , Sorry, Wrong Number , Clash By Night and The Thorn Birds. Interviewed are: actors Robert Wagner, Robert Stack, Roddy McDowall, Ricardo Montalban and Charlton Heston, producer Aaron Spelling, director Edward Dymtryk, dress designer Nolan Miller, biographers Ella Smith and Bob Thomas.

    My Mother met Barbara Stanwyck at the glove counter at I Magnin's in San Francisco back in the seventies. They both had a pleasant conversation about how hard it is to find elbow length gloves. Miss Stanwyck left the store first. The shop assistant then informed my Mother the gloves she had been admiring were a gift from Miss Stanwyck.

    I've heard that in spite of her often "tough" personna, she was one of the nicest people in Hollywood. Apparently, it didn't matter if you were her leading man, or a janitor

    • @annnee6818
      @annnee6818 Před rokem +3

      I really don't see why being tough and being nice should be mutually exclusive. A lot of the "tough" women were just described as bitchy for asking for the same stuff me got to take for granted. I doubt all men were pleasures to work with but they didn't really get called "difficult" much, did they?

    In my opinion. She was one of those women that looked better with age. Unlike 99% of Hollywood, she aged gracefully. And maybe her personality had a little something to do with that.

    After my mother graduated from Boston's Children's Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 , she accepted a position at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. One day a small woman wearing dark glasses came to her supervisor station loaded with toys, games, books and puzzles for the little kids on the wards, and asked for help getting the rest out of her car. It was Barbara Stanwyck with no press, no posse, and driving herself. She spent the entire afternoon playing and reading with the children, before leaving just as unobtrusively as she had come. My mother only stayed there about six months before she returned to New England, but in that time she said Miss Stanwyck did the same thing several times. After that as far as she was concerned, Barbara Stanwyck could do no wrong and became her favorite actress.

      In an odd coincidence, when my mother was in high school, her father accepted a position in Phoenix Arizona. World War II was on , and my mother's after school job was working at a Dairy Bar at Sky Harbor Airfield, where a lot of young Pilots were trained. After she finished her shift and was walking across the tarmac, she said a handsome lieutenant came up to her and asked for directions. As she was going that way, and as she later told me, he was drop dead gorgeous oh, she offered to show him the way. She said he was very polite and they had a lovely conversation, but it wasn't until he said goodbye and they parted company , that she realized she had been walking with Lieutenant Robert Taylor.

Very few people can make the viewer feel the emotions they are portraying on screen. She had that rare quality of an actor who can do deep emotion and hilarious comedy to equal effect. Watch the reruns and watch how she sweeps in to the scenes and carries herself. Not to mention that she hurt herself more than once doing her own stunts. Even when she made one of her last public appearances on an awards show and two people had to hold her up, she was beautiful, and full of grace and class! Babs, you are missed! Love you pretty lady! Does anyone remember Barbara stanwyck and Fred MacMurray in a movie about his being a district attorney and she is a petty thief. The story revolves around the fact that she has to be in carcerated during Christmas season. McMurray eventually takes her home for Christmas with him. The rest of the movie is her coming to realization that she is missing out on life due to her current self-made circumstances. She sees the goodness in those around her without being under conditional love. She let's herself be taken up in this small part of life that is real, pure and forgiving. She finds herself wanting that for her life. You can see in her acting that she has actually repented about her past behaviour and does her best to prove and live up to her new "set of standards " she has promised herself . Like the prodigal daughter if you will. At the end she finds love and accepts responsibility for her previous unlawful actions and vows to correct them. Knowing she could very well be losing the treasure she has recently found in the most unlikely place. This movie would have been a bust without her talent and dedication to the character she created. An amazing lady.
