Despite the frenzy over Robbie Williams being there, the show was struggling by this point. It had been less than a year since Chris Evans left, and they hadn't managed to settle on a replacement. Paul Ross was there and gone within only five months, Richard Orford was being moved around between the house and the OB, Keith Chegwin was now sharing lead role with Mark Little. They were also trying to build up Dannii Minogue and Dani Behr as potential replacements for Gaby, who was about to leave, but then went with Zoe Ball who'd had no screen testing with the audience. The Big Breakfast was all about having the right hosts, but the lack of commitment to a solid regular line-up at this time was having a negative impact. Bunging Robbie Williams in there to gain interest from teen girls was a trick they pulled a few times, but because he would only be there for a few days at a time, the energy was temporary. And in terms of the energy with the show, it was fluctuating wildly between forced OTT mayhem and visible fatigue. They were trying real hard, but the show was looking tired and unsure of how to deal with the changes of the hosting team and how to adapt the content to suit them. It was still relying on well worn Chris Evans material, which was doing a disservice to the new faces battling to make it their own.
