Black Orpheus (Manhã de Carnaval)

  • Alfredo came over with his congas, and we had a terrific jam session, plus he brought several CD's of Chucho Valdes, who is one of my favorite piano players. This tune is called Black Orpheus (in english), after the 1959 Brazilian movie by the same name. The song was a big part of the popularization of samba in the US in the early 60's, and has become a jazz standard.
    The recording of the piano and congas was done with a Rode VideoMic, which attaches to my camera. I added the bass and clave later. When I layered the video, there was a blank patch on the bottom left, so I added the cartoon to fill the space. I get a kick out of that cartoon.

    I like the Latin groove here. A lot of people forget about that when playing this standard. Also dig the beginning piano lick and you keep that feel going the whole tune. Best arrangement i have heard of this in awhile.

    Lovely, and great conga playing. My conga teacher taught me this rhythmn and I found that I could use it in a variety of music, and gave the piece the lift it needed, anytime!!

      Alfredo is actually playing a version of Son Montuno with his own flair to it. However, this is a Bossa Nova style song and I've played it both ways including a 6/8 jump from 2/4. If he played a Bossa Nova conga pattern it would have a different pulse and feel to the song. Listen to the clave which is playing a Rhumba clave pattern. If the clave pattern was in son the piano player would play with a different feel. This is what makes All Latin and African percussion music so interesting is because of the constantly evolving poly rhythms from the mix of styles. Afro Cuban is a perfect example. This video is a perfect example of what is possible outside of tradition. Well done!

    Tom was indeed a great pianist, but there will always and forever be only one Bugs Bunny, the greatest pianist of his day on the planet. I grew up inspired by Bugs, and subsequently started playing piano at age five. I am not even as good as Tom, much less Bugs. 7 Note Mode is my all time favorite now, but Bugs continues to inspire.

  • @volodian
    @volodian Před 13 lety

    It has that feeling! However, having such a great rhythm section as Alfredo you could afford being less rhythmic and choppy and bring in more lyric and melody in contrast to that rhythm. Two rhythm makers feel a bit redundant to me.
    Having said that I do really thank you for your postings! I appreciate you as truly great musician. You have one of the highest "feeling and relevance per note" ratio among other pianists here.
