On the up side, John seems grown-up enough to have realized it was his fault, even if his parents didn't. This is better than my freshman roommate, who flunked out with a 0.0. One of us realized it was his fault. One of us went on to graduate from that University.

You see this kind of thing all the time when kids grown up in a strict and dictated household, once they get freedom they basically self-destruct because they begin doing everything they want to do and also tend to have not a whole lot of self-control because they never really needed it before.
The most famous examples are almost always child stars.

story 1: I actually feel pretty sorry for John here. Yeah, he screwed up his first year, but his parents made the monster and then are so messed up they didn't even allow John to learn and grow and try to fix his mistakes. At least John apparently didn't get his father's complete inability to take responsibility for himself.

Story 1: Wow, i actually feel bad for John here to a degree. While John failing in the university is largely because of his partying and poor decisions, he 100% accepted it and wasn't throwing the OP under the bus for anything. I can't believe John's dad would keep blaming the OP for everything, even when John kept defending the OP. Some parents like that just cannot accept that their children are not perfect. Too bad security or the police weren't called on the dad, he is totally nuts. Hopefully John can learn from all of this and do better for himself after.
Story 2: Yeah i can see why the OP is no contact with their dad. I always hate the attitude of "I raised you, therefore you owe me!" That just screams entitlement and that you are a bad parent. It would be one thing if that dad asked for a loan if he needed it to go, but to demand it like that was just wrong.
Story 3: If you all want to sit together, then make 100% sure that all of your tickets are for the same row and same section. This is a reason wy you always have your ticket with you at all times. Staff like that are always going to take more care of the season ticket holders, so i dont really get why this Karen thought she could make the OP move, and im sure the whole thing with the folding chairs was some sort of cheap intimidation tactic as well. If i were the OP, i would've asked an usher or security person to stay nearby. You never know what other crap that Karen could've tried to pull.
Story 4: The bf here is just a lazy slob, period. This isn't a matter of forgetting or being very busy, it just sounds like he doesnt care at all.... even with the OP getting him some dental care products.
Story 5: OP isn't the jerk here. He's right the money still belongs to the OP's mom until the OP can actually go to college. While i do feel bad for the brothers medical situation, kidney disease sure sucks, but the dad and new wife's attitude is just wrong. Asking is one thing, but then trying to guilt trip them is another. Sounds to me that they need better insurance if their current insurance isn't covering it.

I agree with story 5 but this is probably one of the harder choices and I would probably have to default to "Give them the money because it will help someone who needs it more then i do."
If all options suck then the best one to choose is usually the choice that will help someone who needs it more then you.
Still isn't great and the parents aren't good since they feel entitled to it, but it's not the brother's fault he was dealt a shit hand and the money to pay for his treatments doesn't exist at the moment, and without that money he'll probably die.
So yeah as much as it doesn't feel great, I would probably have to go with giving up the money.

I can always tell if a person had controlling parents growing up. They always get to college and get that first taste of true freedom, and they’re off and running to every kegger in the neighbourhood and failing classes. I watched so many do that, including my BFF who had a mother who treated her like a housemaid. That girl went wild her first semesters at school. Luckily she didn’t fail all her classes, but the partying was way outta control.

I have a hard time blaming John here, for one particular reason: I've seen this happen so many times, and it's always because the parents decided to allow the kid absolute no freedom, no room to fail safely, no toolbox to moderate themselves... usually results in a kid and at least one drop out.

Story 4: As someone who struggles with mental health, as much as I feel guilty about it, sometimes I just don't have the mental energy to brush my teeth and even I'm disgusted in myself by it. Mental illness sucks, it can make even simple tasks really difficult. That said, I still try to do my best. The fact that he doesn't even consider it is gross. I don't really blame OP for not wanting to be intimate but maybe she talk to him about what's going on his life and should push for him to go to therapy. There may be an underlying issue there.

To story 4. You also have to consider the mans mental health. There was a time in my life where i barely had motivation to get up and do something to the point i didnt brush my teeth for days or even weeks. It was horrible. My mental health was very bad then, even tho i looked rather happy most of the time or lazy rather than feeling bad. So i can understand where the boyfriend is coming from. BUT if there wasn't anything happening with him mentally, then i can agree with others judgement, that its immature.

    2. As a mother with adult children it is so weird to me when I hear about parents that act like their children owe them anything. It’s ridiculous. I assume this story takes place in America, where people will avoid calling an ambulance because of the cost.
It is RIDICULOUS and I hate living here. Expenses for any kind of medical or in general health care is insane.
My grandma paid a little over 100 dollars for an inhaler my grandpa NEEDS, and our regular prescriptions would likely be hundreds of dollars if insurance didn’t cover it. I think even getting an epidural for pregnancy is like 2000 dollars (I could be wrong on that number but it’s up there). Here, it’s advised to ask for an itemized bill after hospital visits lest they try to overcharge you (I haven’t done that personally but I’ve heard people save thousands by asking for an itemized bill).
It’s absolutely insane and stuff like in the story are especially expensive.

If you have parents that are way too controlling of their kid, once you've given them the freedom they need, that kid is going to make piss-poor decisions in life. The fact that he stands up for OP and doesn't blame her for everything PLUS accepts that its his fault and not theirs is very respectful of him.
As for OP, they literally did nothing! I mean, John's crazy dad could literally SEE them trying to study, so what reason do you have to blame them? To the narrator on story 4.
I would recommend that you do your research and quit making crude assumptions about people's strange behaviors. There are legitimate reasons as to why someone may not feel comfortable brushing their teeth. For instance, I have a nerve disorder called Sensory Processing Disorder which like the name suggests means that my nerves have trouble processing certain textures or sensations. Case in point my nerve endings in my teeth reacting badly to the Brussels of a tooth brush. This was honestly why I struggled brushing my teeth as a child and even still have difficulty to this day brushing my teeth regularly. And no before you say anything, it's not simply a matter to learning to deal with the discomfort or going to a doctor for some kind of cure. Nerve disorders, just like nerve damage are impossible to fix (at least in today's scientific world).
So, in the future, I would appreciate if you could get off your damn high horse and show some f*cking compassion for people when you don't know the full story for their odd behaviors.

These last two stories with the boyfriend not brushing his teeth and the dad asking for his son’s college money to help fund his other son’s medical treatment I feel the Narrator was very harsh and too readily agreed to the OPs opinion. Normally I can agree or at least understand the narrators comments on the story but this time I think he just went to far without considering any other factors that could be playing into this. Try not to be so quick in passing judgement.

I agree on the last story but on top of that, I understand the brother is going through a tough time and needing stuff with medical attention however you can live with just one kidney. You don't need both kidneys to function. Sure it's going to be an adjustment but they can actually remove the bad kidney and just keep the good one unless it's just both of them are going bad but from the sounds of it it's just one although we don't know that for a fact. Still, he can go without one kidney.

Story 4: struggling with basic hygiene can and is often a sign of various mental disorders such as depression, ADHD, and autism. Keep in mind that not everyone with these conditions will blatantly display them or even realize they have them. I struggle to form routines which includes brushing my teeth because of my ADHD. I have object permanence issues so whenever I don't see my toothbrush or toothpaste, aka as soon as I leave the bathroom, I forget about them and then forget about brushing my teeth. "Just brush them before you leave the bathroom after a shower" I'm sure that'd work great for someone who doesn't get distracted by every little thing and completely forget about whatever task they were in the middle of doing two seconds ago. Other times it's because I don't have the motivation to get up and take care of myself, usually as a result of ADHD paralysis or depressive episodes. I am on track to seek help for my issues since I am aware of them, but for his situation, there's definitely something deeper going on. Honestly hearing the narrator say, "there's literally no excuse other then 'hE jUsT DOeSn'T WaNT tO!' Is extremely hard to hear. For years I constantly beat myself up over not understanding why I couldn't perform even the most basic of tasks, which in turn only made everything worse. I wanted to take care of myself and would repeatedly try to set routines but I would always ultimately stop doing the routine and stop taking care of myself no matter what techniques I tried to remember and stay motivated to do it. Even if this guy specifically just genuinely doesn't want to do it, it's so incredibly hurtful to people who are or have struggled with things like this and honestly doesn't help anyone at all. Please be more considerate of your tone and how you address stuff like this while on a public platform because a statement as simple as that is often enough to really cause people to breakdown. Especially if they're confused and still trying to figure out why they are struggling so much with a 'basic task'.

For the last story, that situation is kind of shit all around, but to be honest, no option is good, so I would have to learn toward giving the money, because if all options suck then the best choice is usually picking the option that helps someone who needs it more.
While it sucks that the parents feel entitled to it the brother can't help he was dealt a shit hand and without the money for his treatment he would probably die, as the money for his treatment doesn't currently exist.
It sucks all around because we can assume the parents won't pay the OP back and they may miss out of college if they do it, but it seems like there's a decent chance the brother won't get the money he needs to pay for his treatment, so I have to default to the option that helps him.

story 4 - I don't think dental hygiene is big of an issue, if he brushes here and there you can't get mad at him. Get mad at his parents for not making it a habit of brushing. My parents never gave us the habit either and I brush every now an then because I have sensitive teeth and sensitive taste. Meaning the only thing that works for my teeth is children toothpaste. I can't use stuff that will make me hurl otherwise I have this issue where I want to throw up just because of the lingering taste in my mouth. As a 27 year old I hardly brush my teeth, and you know what, my teeth are fine, only had 2 cavities. My entire family was shocked.
So don't go blaming the guy for not wanting to brush his teeth. It requires more motivation to even think about doing it. Plus the thing we never got in the story is if he's suffering from depression. Depression can cause many things to go undone. I know it's gross to not brush your teeth but it still requires motivation to get it done, just like everything else.

    • @dobiqwolf
      @dobiqwolf Před 10 měsíci +1

Dental hygiene is not big of an issue for you but it is for people you facing and talking to.
You are only 27, you have no idea if your teeth are fine nor the state of your mouth, cavities are not visible until they have destroyed a big part of the tooth.
And blaming parents when you are a grown up is lame, you did not know better growing up but you do now so get your act together.

    • @animefreaks9963
      @animefreaks9963 Před 10 měsíci +2

@@dobiqwolf Yea for me, but my family hasn't said anything about my breath, meanwhile my father who is brushing his teeth once a day has constant bad breath, and we all tell him at least once a day. So if my family hasn't said anything then it's not that big of an issue.
Blaming the parents isn't lame, they are the ones who is supposed to take care of you while you grow up, without good habits instilled in you you go through life struggling to get into good habits. I have many MANY bad habit that I started when I was a child and no one told me to stop or not to do that. My sides of my fingers are constantly damaged because of this habit. So shove off about getting my act together when you don't stop and think about how others are going through life thinking about more than just brushing their god damn teeth.

Girl, if he can't brush his teeth without you nagging him, then you need to break up with him, ASAP. Because teeth is like the most hygienic thing that you could do for yourself, on a regular basis, and if you're not being hygienic for your teeth on a regular basis, then what else are you not washing or brushing properly? It's so disgusting to not brush on the reg. You need to be with someone who's definitely more hygienic and let him be with a girl who don't like to brush her teeth either. They can just be non brushing mofos together.
