I don’t know why we divided the languages to religions. Punjabi to Sikhs, Hindi to Hindus and Urdu to Muslims. We should learn and respect all languages. I wish I could learn all languages of India.
Among most famous Urdu poets Iqbal, Faiz, Sahir, Qateel, Muneer Niazi were Punjabi, Ahmad Faraz was a Pathan who spoke Pashtu and Hindko (a distant Punjabi in my opinion)
Shiv Kumar Batalvi was a Hindu and most famous of Punjabi poets. Bulhay Shah Baba Farid were Muslims and Punjabi poets….. list is too huge.

Languages are always based on Region not Religion, we don't need to bring religion into it, punjabi can be a mother language to a Hindu, Muslim Buddhist or any one.

RUTBA song is another example of Amazing poetry by Sartaj Ji . Languages are always REGION specific and every language has its own BEAUTY and GRACE. PUNJABI is hugely EMOTIONAL whilst URDU is immensely GRACEFUL.

Sorry to say but it wasn't like that actually that was just a script because Persian script was popular here, in Punjab if you'll read history before the invasion of the British in Punjab at time of maharajah ranjit singh even before that there was no Urdu and Hindi was is Punjab, but was another script was in Punjab that was mainly used by local business people called Lnde (ਲੰਡੇ ).

However urdu was prevalent since we never had a formal education system pre independent.And Urdu was language of then rulers.
BUT,I find it awkward when we find fading away of my own language ,Punjabi.

Sir, Undivided Punjab region had strong focus on education in the Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s era as over 80% of the population could read and write ie amongst the highest literacy rate of the Indian Subcontinent

But here i mention about pre independent India i.e 1850- 1950.

Before partition , punjabi language was not taught in schools , only urdu was.. Punjabi language suffered as a consequence .
