- What is it like to be a soldier on a NATO exercise?
NATO exercises happen all year round - on land, in the air, at sea - with multinational troops from NATO Allies and partner countries. What's it like to be a soldier participating in one of these big exercises? Our video producer documented the experience while embedded with a company of Romanian soldiers on exercise Steadfast Defender 2021.
Exercise Steadfast Defender 2021 was a large-scale NATO exercise, designed to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to any threat from any direction. With over 9,000 participants from more than 20 NATO Allies and partners, the exercise tested NATO's ability to deploy large numbers of troops, equipment and supplies rapidly across the Atlantic and Europe.
Prior to filming, NATO videographers tested negative for COVID-19. It was not mandatory for Romanian troops to wear masks outside, as per national government guidance.
Footage includes shots of video producer Jake Tupman interacting with Romanian soldiers and participating in training.

I spent 1 month x2 in 2009, and 2010 with 1/4 infantry out of hohenfels Germany in cincu helping train Romanian troops. What a blast. In the evenings the officers took me out on the town to the local disco and we partied till 2am only for 50 am wake up and repeat 😂 God bless palinka

I always wondered how do NATO forces when working together get over the language barriers?
English has been established as a general language for NATO operations, here in Estonia you need to pass an english test to join the army as an example. I can't say how it is in other NATO countries but I imagine its similar.

@@zoojuice7893 There is no English test to join the army in Denmark. It's just generally expected that you are somewhat fluent in English.
In Germany you speak German when there are no other countries around. If there are you speak english with them, unless it's the dutch 43. mech brig, then you speak mostly german.

I wonder how the experience of the Romanians in NATO compares with their decades as part of the Warsaw Pact.
They will have different weapons now (better ones?) and different doctrine.
Have tactics changed? How about discipline and morale?
Almost every unit in the Romanian army has in theater experience, having operated alongside US and allied troops in both Afghanistan and Iraq. They've also been part of UN peacekeeping missions in places ranging from Bosnia to Mali. It's safe to say tactics and doctrine are a far cry from the Warpac days. Also, today the army is 100% professional, conscripts are a thing of the past.
Romania still uses a lot of Soviet-era vehicles and weapons, but to be part of NATO there is still some standardization, like using the same ammo
