  • On March 28th, 2024, American Express updated the Hilton Honors Business credit card. They raised the annual fee to $195, revamped the multipliers to include a 5X everything else category up to $100k in spend, then 3X, added a $60 quarterly Hilton statement credit, and added other benefits as well.
    But they also removed some benefit on the card, including the spend $15,000 to get a Hilton Free Night Reward as well as the 10 Priority Pass Select Memberships per year.
    Even though these beloved benefits are going away, they are not going away immediately, these benefits will expire on June 30th, 2024 so it’s critical to have a plan and a strategy to maximize value until then.
    We explore these new updates and more in this video so sit back, relax, and enjoy this casual, conversational-style video about the new Hilton Honors Business credit card, and what it means for us moving forward.

    Yeahhh the first thing I did when I ran out this morning, was reading the fine print and finding out that June 30th date hiding in there, they always have something they don’t want the to be fully public facing, makes sense.
    Good stuff Stan! I liked your thoughts towards the end, for sure many other cards to put that $8k towards, but hey, each card is valuable year 1 with the welcome offer!

      For sure Tony! Great job getting your video out as well as the community post. There's always some hidden magic in the T&Cs, and thanks for letting me know about it when I got up this morning. You East Coast people have the news advantage! Yeah, it does seem like a nice catch-all card, but there are tons of other cards out there that are much better for spend, and the Hilton Business card is an Amex card so, by default, not a great option for catch-all since you can't reliably use it overseas.

    Stan coming out with the content QUICK! 🔥 As someone without the Platinum card, the main reason I’ve wanted this card is for Hilton Gold status without adding to my 5/24 count. I could still justify it by liquidating the Hilton credits, but overall the card definitely got a big nerf here.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Haha, thanks Spencer! If you can get this card before the $15k FNA disappears on 6/30/24, that would be ideal, but of course, only if you can meet that spend organically. The welcome offer on this card kind of sucks. Better to get the Surpass, but you're probably like me and want to go up the Hilton ladder starting with the regular HH card since family language is coming, we just don't know when!

    Awesome video Stan, you're spot on with the near-term strategy to get value from the card. My wife has the card and after we get those Q1 and Q2 credits, it'll almost certainly be a cancel. I feel like even for bigger businesses that spend/redeem a lot at Hilton, the value proposition of the card significantly dropped with the removal of the FN for $15k spend. The 5x catch-all multiplier definitely doesn't make up for it in my mind haha.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks Monty! Yeah, this card is a cancel after you get the credits. Unless you're really gunning for *just* Hilton points, I have no idea who would realistically use this card when there are so many other cards out there that offer a better value proposition on that spend. I guess if you stay at Hiltons a LOT, like the business road warrier, I can see a use for this card, but that would be for the Hilton credit and the $60 quarterly credit, not the 5X category.

  • @royce1510
    @royce1510 Před 3 měsíci +7

    Swapping FNCs for higher multipliers is an obvious move to reward big spenders or big spending businesses, which is what they want on this card. If you max it out, 200K extra points is pretty equivalent to 2 FNCs. You can book the majority of Hilton properties for 100K points or less. Hilton gets more transaction fee revenue, customers get similar value with a lower fee thanks to the credit, and the cards costs Hilton less by not giving out too many FNCs. At least that’s how I’m reading these changes

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That's a very astute observation Royce! Yeah, if they maxed out $100k spend, there will certainly be enough points for 2 FNAs - and there wouldn't be the standard room reward restriction (vs. premium room reward). It seems like a win-win in that scenario, but only for those very high spending businesses. $15k is still a lot of money on one card in a year, and I think a little more achievable for most people. I think Hilton just wants larger spend businesses, but no smaller businesses. And no businesses that use the shipping multiplier.

    Great vid! I thought for a few moments about a usecase for using it for big ticket items -- new washing machine, video game console, etc. Things that ususally don't have a category of 5x or more. Assuming it still has purchase protection and warranty extension. But then I thought, nah, holding a card and using coupons just for that ain't worth it.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks Dugroz! Haha! Exactly! I mean, if you wanted to go for the welcome offer, plus get to that $15k Hilton FNC, I don't think that unreasonable. But the issue is the only spending target is $40k for Diamond on this card which is useless. Yeah, you could keep getting the Hilton credit on this card, but almost every Amex card has some sort of credit now so it builds up quickly! I have this card and the Business Gold and both used to have no credits and now I have a surprise monthly on the Business Gold and a surprise quarterly on this card, and I didn't ask for that!

    Definitely agree with you here that a huge priority going forward with this is going to be to try to see if you can hit the spend cap for the FNA before 6/30 (high upcoming expenses), and if not, I honestly don't really think this Card is all that worth it, and would prefer sticking with the Surpass at this point. Of course if you already have a card like the Amex Plat and so Gold Status doesn't matter, then that's the icing on the cake. Great video as always Stan!

    • @TheCreditFrog

      Thanks Matt! Yeah, the FNR was a really great selling point on the card, and to replace it with a 5X everything else Hilton multiplier doesn't really make up for it. The only spend target now is the $40k for Diamond status which is a waste of money tbh. There are a lot of other catch-all cards that are better choices. It was good while it lasted. On the flip side, Amex made their Surpass card look way better by nerfing the Business so there's that too 🤣. Since you have the Surpass, that must feel nice haha!

Especially if you stay at Hiltons often, you can organically get those credits, which is nice. I still think the loss of the 15k FNC is a huge bummer, and not sure if the extra 2X multiplier on everything else to 5X plus the AF increase was worth the loss of the FNC, but if you put tons of spend on the card, that's up to 500k Hilton points per year, which is definitely something!

    $240 credit is nice but I will be valuing it at $200 as you have to get gift cards in $50 increments via Hilton and most quarters likely would be doing that and saving up for spend at one time on a stay. I just bought one today to capitalize on Q1. I just renewed my card in December so guess I will keep it for a year and squeeze the limited value out of it before canceling but having a $10k business card is certainly tempting to keep. In some ways I like the 5x catch all because for once it actually simplifies a card

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah, the $240 credit is limited if you go the gift card route since the increments are weird. It does simplify the spending to have only one catch-all category multiplier, but if you're going to take away one of the best reasons to spend on the card, it's not even worth it anymore because there no spend target. Also, if you want to cancel the card early, I'm pretty sure you get a prorated refund of the $95 AF you spend in December so it wouldn't be a total loss if you canceled it earlier than your next renewal date!

      Yeah, it's definitely going to depend on how you use the card. I think for business spenders, in particular, $15k per year is actually not to hard to do so, which is probably why it got nerfed. Personal spend of $15k is not at easy, but now this benefit only exists on the Surpass. It could act as a nice catch-all card, but it's also an Amex which doesn't work well overseas so it's like a catch-all*

I can see your point, especially if you only have the Hilton Business. For me, I would rather just throw a few large purchases on the Hilton Aspire to push it to $30K or $60K. However when i asked about annual fees the rep said the annual fee has been $195 this whole time and was never $95. So they are basically telling me even though i signed up under the impression that the annual fee was $95 its $195 end of discussion. Is this common? Thanks for the work you do on this channel! How about we use the BBP at 2x for no annual free. Then transfer those points to Hilton for a total of for 2x. That gives us 4x for no annual fee. Thoughts?

    • @thejokerspeaks
      @thejokerspeaks Před 3 měsíci +1

      Ultimately, I think the Hilton Surpass is better at $15K spend. That said, I'm keeping my BBP for Amex MR offers, and hopefully the occasional transfer bonus. If you make sure to use your Hilton points for at least 0.6 cents per point, that's essentially a 2.4% return on a card with no AF. When Hilton points go on sale for 0.5 cents per point, you could use either card to load up if you needed additional points.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci +1

Many of us already have better Hilton cards that pay a higher return, so we're already spoiled and don't want to mess with new coupons. At $15K spend on the Hilton Surpass, and assuming I only spend on 3X, I"ll be getting about 5.5% back with the free night, and additional $50. If I spend $30K on the Hilton Aspire, I'll earn 5.5% again with the 2 free nights, ahead again by $50 if I use all the air and hotel credits. The earning drops to 4.5% at $60K on the Aspire, but still well above the business.

Doesn’t seem make sense to do it, so I’ll probably just try the $50 gift certs. Additionally, I rarely spend extra money in hotels just because it’s overpriced and not worth it. Yeah, that's the unfortunate limitation of the gift cards. So you'd still have to stay at Hilton hotel to get the credits unless you want to forego the extra $10 per quarter. The gift cards are nice though because they don't expire so you could get $50 and $25 gift cards and then save them for the end of the year and use them all in one go or something like that. If you can continue to use the $60 quarterly Hilton credit either through stays or through a gift card purchase, then it would still work out in your favor! But if you need the extra Amex slot or don't want to deal with it, may be worth canceling. Not sure of your other cards, but it's probably a keeper for the next year if it's your only card with Hilton Gold status.

    Getting rid of Priority Pass and killing the free night certificate is enough for me not to renew. Had the triple of Aspire/Surpass/Business. May just go two Surpass, spend 30K, get two FNCs, gold status, and buy gift cards in quarters we don’t stay at Hiltons and make $100 negative fee from statement credits and call it a day.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci

      For sure Len. Yeah, if I were you, I'd also probably go with 2 Surpass cards over the Hilton business. The fun part about having personal Hilton cards is also playing the upgrade ladder so that's another option to if you don't mind PCing your cards up and down the ladder!

    Juice ain’t worth the squeeze with the entire Hilton lineup now. Too many hoops to jump through to liquidate the credits. Spend is better to put towards other welcome bonuses.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci +1

      For sure Brandon, Amex continues to make it harder and harder to get value from their cards. I agree, welcome bonuses are the way to go, but it's nice when you can combine them with hotel benefits (like FNRs) so you can jump start your earnings!

  • @chadpennycuff
    @chadpennycuff Před 3 měsíci

    RIP Hilton Biz card. If you jump through quarterly hoops theres some value but this is now a churn and burn for the sub card. Retention offer year 3 and dump year four. Not worth a long term Amex slot IMHO.

    • @TheCreditFrog
      @TheCreditFrog  Před 3 měsíci

      Hah! I agree Chad. Used to be a great card long-term for that $15k FNR, at least for me. Now I have some credit I have to deal with (again). Will get my credits, and the new design, then close.
