  • Thom Richard performs aerobatics in his Curtiss TP-40N Warhawk "American Dream" during the Tuesday airshow at Sun 'n Fun 2021 in Lakeland, FL. This is a rare dual-control training version of the P-40, made famous by the Flying Tigers.

You can keep your P-51s and your Supermarine Spitfires, in my book this is the most beautiful WW2 fighter plane, period. It's just a pit bull of an aircraft: compact, tough, looks mean, has a wicked bite, but has an air of grace and athleticism.

Thom gets all my respect, just flying the wings off that P40. Beautiful aircraft beautifully piloted and filmed; that 8 point roll, my God just superlative. Thanks to all involved for sharing!!! Ciao.

Astonishing the P40, the best of all!!! And the Allison engine sounds better than Merlin , Db605 and radial engines!!!

My favorite WW2 fighter when I was 8, and still my favorite fighter at age 61. Great lines, great sound, and built like a steel bridge. Tough airplane. I owned a 180HP Globe Swift, and the planform view of the Swift is nearly identical to the P-40. The wing shape is very nearly the same. And the Swifts were built by people who came from Curtiss-Wright after the war.

Those airframes were so ridiculously tough that this wasn't stressing that old 'bird at all. Love the 8 pointer.

Such a beautiful airplane that deserves a better reputation. All you hear about its history is what it did in China. The German troops in Africa hated them. They were the best ground support aircraft of their day, and a fast bomber. They could out dive any of the German aircraft, British Aircraft, and most of the American ones. For most of WWII they held the dive record at 600 mph.

I've seen a Curtiss Kittyhawk at an English airshow, and it sounded remarkably similar to the Warhawk in this video. Are Kittyhawks and Warhawks the same aircraft?

      Yes they are

You’re correct! Same aircraft slightly different variants. If I remember correctly P-40B & Cs here, were British Tomahawk MKII’s. P-40D,E, & F here, were named the Kittyhawk mkI, mkIA, and mkII over there.
