This song has gotten me through all kinds of grief in my life. It doesn't have to be a partner ... the loss of a parent, a friendship, a beloved pet ... all of the things that make life amazing can also take you down emotionally when they're gone. Nothing is forever. The night I picked up my "heart dog," I looked in her fuzzy little puppy face and said, "Let's dance, Puppy Dog." And oh how we danced! I knew from the beginning our time was limited and I absolutely adored her. We had 10.5 years of perfect, unconditional love. It took me to my knees when I lost her. But this idea of having a trade-off and never having her in my life because it hurt so much when she was gone? No. I'll always take the dance. It's life. No joy without pain, but it's always worth it. Thanks to Garth for this song that has wrapped me in comfort for the hardest times of most of my adult life. ❀

Aww, I so get this. And last year, I adopted a 15 year old dog who's owners went to hospice and the family dumped her in a shelter. Aryo came to live with me instead and I had a full year with her before she passed. She was a cool dog. And yes, I wanted that Dance with her, even though I knew there would be pain/grief after. No regrets. She was a very cool dog

Unanswered Prayers is another one that reminds us that everything happens for a reason, even if that reason isn’t immediately apparent to us. Every event leads up to where we are and helps us to grow into the person we’re meant to be.

My husband died of Pulmonary Fibrosis and suffered horribly for a year and a half! He loved this song and when I hear it now, I wonder if I would have made the same decisions if I had known how his life ended. I'm sure I would because I loved him with all my heart and soul ... the dance was our life and the pain of losing him is almost unbearable at times! The greater the love, the greater the pain!!

This song helped me after the loss of my husband of over 30 years (friends for over 36 years) in 2020. Yes, "I could've missed the pain but I'd have to miss the dance, and I wouldn't miss that for the world". The one thing that I'd tell the "lucky" ones who haven't suffered this loss YET, make sure your loved ones know and feel your love daily. Don't sweat the small stuff, in the end, it's all small stuff. Let go of unrealistic expectations and give grace. He wasn't perfect but God knows I was a handful too, but we stuck it out.

As has been mentioned, Garth opens the video with an explanation of The Dance is more than just about ourselves. So many lives were touched, dare I say, by greatness because they did not try to change the direction they were heading. Garth had plenty of happy songs, but I like best the songs that speak the truth. I am glad that you enjoyed this one; Garth has some amazing songs, The Red Strokes, When There's No One Around; the best live performance was when he walked out at a Billy Joel concert, and they sang Shameless.

Boy have I been through a lot in my 50+ years. From abuse to foster care to a drug dependent youth to more abuse, etc. I had my epiphany moment in my early 20s and made the changes necessary to become quite successful, married for nearly 30 years, 6 kids and 5 grands, a federal career, decent house with a garden out back... and peace.
My troubles and triumphs, mountains and valleys, social adventures and periods of deep introspection have turned me into someone who can easily converse with people from all socioeconomic backgrounds without any judgment.
I thank God for teaching me to dance. I wouldn't have it any other way.

When my first wife died, I left the hospital and went home and played this song to myself. At first I thought that placing a DNA on her was the hardest thing I ever had to do; but when I made the decision to turn her machine off and stood and watched my then 19 year old daughter lay her head on her mama's chest until she took her last breath....I loved which-way that woman went. In 23 years she took me on the wildest up and down roller-coaster ride. I certainly could have missed all the pain; but then I would have missed the dance.(Smiling) Thanks, Sivi.

@barrythomas6227 July 24th, 2021 my son showed up around 11:30 am to show his mom and me his new Fender guitar... Well his mom hadn't gotten up yet, and he went into our room got next to his mom shaking her asking her to get up, and she said Jake I will, and both were laughing... He said I love you mom, and she said I love you too Jake... I went back in the bedroom, and my wife sits up talking and everything else... She said I'm going to get in the shower and we'll go to the store. I said okay, and as she was going into the bathroom I said I love you honey, she said I love you too. About a half a minute later I heard a loud bang. I jumped up and went into the living room because I thought that my son was playing with our pitbull's and possibly knocked over a chair in the dining room. Well he was sound asleep on the couch.. So nothing was knocked over. I went back into the bedroom and yelled for my wife and there was no answer, I yelled her name again, and still no answer. I opened the bathroom door and my wife was face down in the bathroom floor.. Thank God that she hadn't gotten in the shower yet, because that would have been a bad mess... Anyways I tried to see if she was okay, and her breathing was shallow, and I yelled for my son, and my brother-in-law to come and help. My son was already on the phone with 911 for a ambulance. Then the next thing that I knew she was gone! They pronounced her dead at the hospital, and the cause of death was a blood clot hit her heart. We dated for 4 years, and married for 21 years. We were together for 25 years! None of us saw this coming.. I'm just glad we got to tell each other that we love each other just before she passed away unexpectedly! I just wanted to say I know what you were going through... I'm sorry for writing so much... This song gets me emotional because of the second verse. I miss her terribly. 😱.... God Bless and have a great day.

Garth has also made some really epic videos, but good luck finding them on CZcams. lol
But if you get a chance on your off time to look some up, you definitely should.

If you get a chance to watch the official video, it has JFK, MLK and Lane Frost, all people who've left us too soon.

I believe he wrote this after his mother died

This is about losing someone, not about losing a relationship

I mean it can be open for interpretation, but I do believe it's more specifically referring to the death of a loved one. That's the beautiful thing about music though, it means something different to everyone.

The original writer of the song, Tony Arata, said it was about a man-woman marriage relationship. His inspiration was the film Peggy Sue Got Married. About a woman in a failing marriage who travels back in time and considers breaking up with the guy she married. The lyrics seem to confirm this as well: "How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye", and "Holding you I held everything". But Garth has used it in the context of losing someone through the death of a loved one.

I suppose this song hits every one a little differently, to me it's how I feel about my ex after our divorce.

What if something you did when you were a lot younger that didn’t turn out well for you now. Would you go back and change that decision ??? I wish I could go back 40 years and change the direction I took

I know the screen is fuzzy, but from what I could see, this didn’t look a thing like Garth Brooks. Has he lost a lot of weight lately or something?

Not an actual dance, tho. The dance was the entire relationship; ups, downs back and forth...like a dance.

Studio version or the official video would have been way better reaction material. No crowd, and there are visuals in the ov that don't come out in the live performance

      *Spoilers for Music Video*
Where he says "King", they depict MLK, and for another, they show JFK. It's really more pertinent to the understanding, plus, if you are really lucky, you'll find a version with his "video foreward" at the beginning, which explains the song and the personal meaning he felt for it.
