- With the release of Devil May Cry 3 for the Nintendo Switch a lot of new people are going to experiance my favorite game ever, with this i saw an opportunity to point some heads the direction of a lesser used style, a style often forgotten and missunderstood. This is my tutorial, How to Block anything with Royal Gaurd

When he said the parry was tight, i didn’t think it was *that* tight the enemies weapon literally has to be in your mouth before you get a perfect parry
"A Royal Guard battle taken to the extreme." *goes to fight Vergil*
Didn't he suffer enought bullying? XD
😂😂
Well, it's vergil 1. He kinda deserves to be bullied a bit
The only style I ever had in DMC 3 was *shoot it til it's dead because I'm a horrible player* style
So I guess it's time to try something new
You would love dmc2 in that case...
@@Nick37376 lol
@@Nick37376 _D_ on’t worry!
Gunslinger would be the perfect style for you then. More long range options and the ability to charge shots
@@TheNadroj10 And Shot Cancel which allows light speed Ebony and Ivory
Obviously the greatest style is Royalguard, but Gunslinger is surprisingly powerful and often overlooked in my opinion.
Idk about that, Quick Silver is god
@@Kuribohchaos8 i never used it tbh
The most used it definitely sword master just for all the combo potential
@@entruh4520 i do because of style switching
Do rising dragon in sword then quicksilver
@@JuriSins I thought you couldn't switch styles mid fight in dmc3....
Trickster is my favourite due to its versatility;
You can avoid taking damage outright far more easily than with normal dodge or Royal Guard, increased manoeuvrability all around, letting you scale walls, air dash and teleport, as well as allowing you to be generally faster on ground, and with greater manoeuvrability comes greater combo variety as well.
I think it generally makes the game more enjoyable in most situations.
I find it good for getting DT in the Nevan fight
true but RG’s release is god-tier when you wanna deal big damage and a perfect parry can stop beowulf’s pounce attack and stun him enough to hit you. pair that with Cerberus’ revolver and you have one hell of a beowulf stun advantage
@@theastroguy7417 While a full release’s damage is good, spamming the Agni and Rudra aerial for ridiculous damage is also good, and far safer. Less work, similar pay off, plus everything I mentioned in the OG comment.
I’ve gotten way better with the RG style, but due to how it’s not a guaranteed block 100% of the time like in DMC 5, plus having to stick to it without the other styles in 3, still heavily prefer Trickster. Haven’t even talked about the fact you have to grind out one style for like the whole game to max it out. I’d say Trickster gives you the most bang for your buck in overall enjoyment. With style switching tho, ofc idm Royal Guard… or ANY style really.
@@dashi-musashi351
i get that, but given that im too fucking lazy to try jump cancel practice and RG mechanics are easier to learn, i stick with that or swordmaster when i play through the game
Hearing about buffering royal guard increased my brain size by like 20% I've never known about this.
Thanks, this helped me better understand Royal guard, when I first picked up the game, I thought it only blocked and didn't do damage, so I neglected it. But now that I see it's full potential, I'll be sure to pick up that style.
When I was young I used to like gunsligner more than the others. Now I'm not so sure. RG is super fun, SM is so powerful and TK is so cool. I still play the ps2 version so I don't have that option of having all 4 styles in-game.
Which version has all of them because I thought that was implemented in Dmc4
thegamewin100 the switch version, its an optional mode
@@thegamewin100 you can use mod on PC
This guy is good. He makes it look so easy. Believe me I have tried and I get killed every time for taking too much damage just trying to block.
I was confused on what the parry was even supposed to do. I spent like 10 minutes in the agni and rudra fight because I believed getting a perfect block was supposed to knock their weapons away so I kept thinking I was doing it wrong lmao
@@tylerlackey1175 perfect guarding and releasing it's like playing qte without buttons on the screen (facing nevan's bat spinning vergil's yamato/force edge combo and yamato judgement cut for example)
Yeah it's too fucking hard.
@@brucewayne2184 no you just have a skill issue
@@Green_FalconI’ve mastered Royal guard and i have to agree with him, it’s actually fucking hard
Damn I feel like downloading this game again just for royal guard, never bothered with it when I was young but I kinda want to try it now
Can it Block the divorce paper?
😂😂😂
I knew jump buffering rg, but I didnt know it counted as a perfect block every time. I thought you still had I frames and thus just didnt get staggered
You were basically right from how I understand it. The I frames directly transition into RG Frames with the first one (probably first few) being a perfect guard.
If you know an attack will be active while you are in the middle of invincibility, switching to a RoyalGuard block should be perfect.
Waifu and others probably know more about the frame data, but this is how it should work.
If you jump and block at the right moment, as long as the enemy's weapon is inside your hitbox, you don't have to time a block perfectly to get a perfect guard anymore, which is what he was trying to say.
Same but I thought it was just so rhat if you timed it wrong the s would save you
Imagine how easy jester is after knowing that
The mistake that i did during Royal guard was not pressing the style button hard enough. We should hold down firmly the style button not to tap it like in Sekiro's deflect.
You can do tapping if you got the timing down. However it may be difficult because royal guard animation is quick if tapped hence, buffers are useful such as jumping/dodging/attacking or even by mashing the style button. The problem sometimes with holding the style button is the block break which is more dangerous than just taking damage, plus there are cases of accidental release.
The second I learned you can push agni and rudra with royal guard in between almost all their attacks made the fight from overwhelming to simple lol
I know it's been a while, but this is hands down the best tutorial on Royalguard that i have seen (it has everything someone needs to know and a little bit more), and i think it would be awesome of you did a similar one on all the other styles.
Me: *Picked Royal Guard as his first style because I'm more of a defensive player not knowing how difficult it would make my first playthrough.*
Me a Few Months Later: *Trimphantly defeats Vergil 3 with nothing but Rebellion and Royal Guard.*
not even guitar?
Lol, I just got it yesterday and chose royal guard for the same reason. I had to look this up cuz I'm good at blocking Cerberus icicles but not his other attacks.
*Laughs in shotgun*
Royalguard is the best! It's my fav style because of how absurd and badass it looks while executing. And awesome video, thank you Waifu.
Oh yes, this is just what I needed! Thank you. It's looking like royal guard is my favorite style now lol.
I seen your speed run and been watching cause it and I love dmc 3 bro you’re the proverbial goat in my eyes bro
I recently got HD collection for PS4, man this is so useful! and very recent video for DMC3 standards! thanks for the video it does help!
Great video waifu runs 👌💯 Your channel is sick bro. It’s weird because I never really used royal guard until now, and tbh it’s after playing
sekiro that gave me the idea. But yeah man having a blast with royal guard 🎮👍💯
Thanks bro, this was very informative
Trickster is my favorite, followed by Royal Guard, Sword Master, and Gun Slinger.
Your twitter comment brought me here, may or may not reference this in my next video if you're cool with that xD this is such a cool mechanic
Please do! I have actually referenced some of your vids in mine you make great content!
Yes, do more style tutorials, please!!!
gonna use this info to yoink the switch wr, its free...right?
Ez pz
Thank you for the tutorial! I started playing this game again to set out on completing a childhood dream, beating dmc3 dmd mode. This will definitely help!!
Thats a lot of Damage, its sounds familiar.
Perfect releases make vergil 3 a cakewalk on dmd. Top notch guide
I love how this game is still so relevant
Wow thank that was super useful information 😊
i actually used royal guard againt the first boss because it dealt alot of damage and i wanna continue my combos so yea thank you for this tutorial
Royal Guard helped me get through Lady boss fight on hard, Royal Guard the Rockets and Back style the Hysterics missiles. :)
I've tried Royal Guard once and and I don't understand this how to use it better. So I never used it throughout my gameplay. But now I understand how to use it better.
Great video 👍
I’m a basic bitch with trickster. The mobility and easier dodging is too valuable for me to give up. Unless I’m purposely styling, I usually main rebellion with Cerberus or Beowulf so I don’t necessarily need the extra options from sword master since both of those give you a lot of options if you practice your jump cancels.
i found out that my style is royal guard after trying it out its just great
4:03 to 4:35 dante: whew....now THAT was a workout.
thx I wanted and was planning on spending hours on Royal guard until I watched this video now I can not spend a shit ton of hours on mastering it but will spend months of waiting for my new controller to arrive cuz my controller stopped working and spend more hours on leveling up Royal guard
Imagine you're a dark souls player who beat the whole series by only parrying
I literally only use sword master maybe I’ll use royal guard now
I did not played royal guard back in the days because I was so engaged with swordmaster. Now, after playing a good amount of Sekiro it is so satisfying to parry almots anything in DMC3. It's svery funny and rewarding in terms of style points.
This will be really helpful in Cerberus fight because I died many times fighting him lol
I didn't know that you can cancel animation by using Royal Guard in DMC3. Been trying to do that thing since I saw it in one of those MAD combo videos, I thought I just need to push the triangle button at the right moment. Thanks!
When I first played devil may cry, I played five first then got the HD collection along with four special edition the one style I can't put down in dmc3 for me is royalgaurd I feel like an unstoppable tank who can decimate any demon in my path when I went up against vergil 2 I royal released and devil trigger explosion instantly ended the fight and it felt like I was a god
I like all styles of dmc3 but i love swordmaster and Royalguard they are my favorite styles
I had no idea that royal guard was that good wow
I actually love using Royal Guard I can't get enough of it. I struggle with the timing when going up against Virgil. So my question is if there's a perfect block and perfect release...is there a perfect block for the ultimate shield?
Unfortunately no. Ultimate only absorbs attacks that can be normal blocked.
I can tell that waifu is retiring when he uploaded hes fav games running fundamentals
Retiring? Nah. CZcams is a different platform that requires different content. It's meant to be re-playable/help, and maybe even link to during stream..
my favorite style is gunslinger
I'll come back after trying royal guard according to your tips
Another dudes video (who needed to watch this in order to get good at royal guard) brought me here originally and now I can’t remember what it was or who it was by. Dx
I am here once again to try and jog my terrible memory.
Royalguard é uma mecânica que funciona apenas em situações específicas. Seria bom se ele oferecesse uma framedata detalhada dela contra os inimigos, principalmente os chefes aonde ela é mais útil
I kinda love gun stinger because it still feels like 3 has the most creative version of it. In particular I like wild stomp and gun stinger, which was sadly nerfed in 4 or and 5. Point blank is also pretty nuts.
I remember playing coop with my friend on ps2 pick doppelganger style an unlimited devil trigger an press start on 2nd controller you can control the doppelganger with the 2nd controller while player 1 is dante pretty fun
What?!
Sword master used to be my favorite but then I got to the final Vergil fight, and was basically forced to learn royal guard in order to beat it
Thanks a lot
Royalguard has a move that *heals* you?! I usually always use Tricker and sometimes Swordmaster. Guess I need to practice using Royalguard more now.
fascinating
Thanks a for this I remember playing this game when I was 8 on ps2 but I could never figure out royal guard
Now all these years later I finally played and beat dark souls 1 and 3 so now I’m going back to this to git gud
I got gud in devil may cry 4 I beat every mode even hell and hell and I got almost all achievements so this is next
Cool video 👍😎
Trickster its really fun and simple
i mean every style has it's own advantages and all of them are cool to use but there's nothing better than sword master that you can perform really cool combos in level three specially with the Rebellion
I love how the only time Vergil landed a hit was after he got “a little motivated” lol
my favorite style in dmc3 is swordmaster because idk i just feel way too limited without the extra moves it gives, which is why i couldn't really get into other styles in dmc3, thank god style switching is a thing in 4 and 5
You should try the switch release version, it's got freestyle mode, which is style switching.
dmc3 is the perfect game for replayability , from all the combos, styles , weapons and melees. there’s endless combos and sets you can do
Royal guard is not really as much as "High risk" but definitely high reward. The dodge timing is just the same with royal guard. And royal guard button can be pressed multiple time as a buffer or do jump/dodge buffer. Then there is Ultimate which is VERY useful for Bloody palace.
I've done dmc 5 rg only challenge. Used it fairly often in dmc 4 against the Angelo's but likewise with dmc 3, I just couldn't get the timing down right to do perfect guard consistently
Royal guard is a good style for health preservation and quick dmg gunslinger is good for gun moves and stun swordsmaster is good for melting hp bars and c9mbos trickster good for dodging and running
I passed dmc3 twice by trickster and gunslinger(damn gunslinger, damn Beowulf guns only),I learned to royal guard because I didn't understand it in the game so i switched to trickster.Royal guard wasn't easy for me because i used to dash
Favorite style so far is trickster but now I’m gonna try this royal guard
Tbh I always just got used to using trickster lol but now I try and use them all and it’s made me a much better devil hunter lol
I think the most understood style is definitely Gunslinger because everyone understands that it's bad and won't do as much damage or be as useful as any other Style
lies and slander
Brooooooo I've been preaching about how dmc 3 is the best
God tier vid, wish 12 year old me found this back in the day
impressive how this game is ahead of his time
But using sword Master since on the switch remaster since its been years since I played any DMC but man, Transitioning between swordmaster and gunslinger is so much fun lol.
Im getting better with it. Ive been playing through the first levels over and over again to learn, but cerberus still has full screen attacks you cant parry
all of cerberus' attacks can be perfect blocked
It can be blocked. even the ice floors and icicle shower. The problem I find with Cerberous is its tricky frame placement. The head is the weakpoint but sometimes the attack don't read it getting hit.
Most people: Royalguard is a defensive style
RG: B E E G damage
Damnit I should’ve recorded my Agni and rudra fight
I used royal guard for the first time in there and I had them both stun locked at the same time in their resting animation then I beat them both at the same time because if I remember from playing the game on ps2 they have a second phase where one uses both swords
I blocked almost every hit because I used the royal guard as a dark souls dodge and it worked
*Coooooooollll!*
I gravitated towards Swordmaster since it let me use some pretty sick moves with all my other weapons. I just never get why they added Royals Guard till i played dmc5, it's useful but a pain in the ass to master.
Ah, so when you time it right and there's a flash it means it's more of a parry and you don't take damage. I thought the flash meant you've opened up a counter window. I've been playing NGB for too long.
The gold release where he actually charges through enemies is the actual power counter. I'm having trouble perfect blocking though. It's not when the attack animation starts or when it's just about to hit, it's somewhere inbetween. I'm used to having to block just before the hit connects like in other games. But in this, it's usually too late by then.
How do use the Royal Guard palm strike thing well? I've noticed it can do quite a bit of damage, you don't have to block first it can be more of an attack. I was hoping it would guard break, but it doesn't seem to.
I've heard people use the other styles more, but for me, even though I'm near a complete beginner, I like it, because I've always wanted a guard button in the previous DMC games. It's just not as easy to implement. When your surrounded by enemies all hitting you at different times, I'd like to be able to SFIII Ryu parry every attack one after the other, but it doesn't quite work that way.
I'd like the timings to be a little less tight. Even if it was loosened by a few extra frames.
I love gunslinger and swordmaster
I just like parry and this is most close things
That’s major fingering Man U have good fingers good technique
I loved defeating beowulf and agni and rudra with royal guard
you got yourself a sub the moment you said dmc 3 is your favorite game of all time
Trickster was my main style growing up but I was dogshit with royal guard
So I've been binge watching some of your videos for awhile now. I'm still relatively new to the DMC series, I've been playing DMC3 for about 4 months at this point and generally play it (as well as 4 and 5) in an aggressive and offensive style, usually I go with Swordmaster to extend combos or Trickster for more mobility. However, I'm interested in using more Royal Guard and play in a more defensive style. This video helped me get more insight in how to get better at the style. However, what advice would you give for somebody who generally plays offensively to try a more defensive style?
Just use royal gaurd to play offensive it’s way more fun, because of the animation cancels you can play much faster than other styles
@@WaifuRuns Ty
I got bored of the game because I mastered every style, beat the game in both vergil and dante in all difficulty’s and spedrun the game. But i have never touched royal guard so thank you
I've never tested this since I'm a normie that plays swordmaster mainly, but if you block and attack in DMD difficulty, does the damage u take actually kills you in one shot?
I'm gonna test it out when I'm out off work
I mostly main Vergil, but I play Dante too to practice his styles (shame Vergil only has 1)
Award master stayal
i wish Dante could use Royal Guard in cutscenes
Doppelganger and darkslayer are the best for me
I’m not sure if you’ll see this but, I just started playing dmc 3 special edition on console (this is my very first time playing dmc 3) and I instantly wanna go into the royal guard style. I know it’s the hardest style to learn but I wanna try to learn it, is this a bad idea? Or should I try learning the basics of the game first/ try other styles?
Yes
Ive been playing dmc3 since i was a kind on the ps2 now im replaying it on my pc, and its the first time using RG (on very hard mode) kinda complicated hahah
definetly trickster you can escape anything
Yess, it's my favourite style.
I like combo, and because of it i like swordmaster... But i have Nintendo and can play with every style in one moment)
Learning how to use royal guard on Devil May Cry 3 is like learning how to use a deflect critical on onimusha Warlords. When you block make a spark if you have not made a spark you're doing it wrong
